    If the β€œflapper” is broken and it’s letting air in and out, how do you replace just that? Does the whole unit have to be removed and replaced?

      You'll need to buy a replacement duct connector for your specific exhaust fan that has the damper inside. Sometimes you can install them after you remove the motor by slightly bending the pIastic damper and clicking the sides into place. You should be able to tell if that's the case when you purchase the new duct connector. If not, you might be able to replace it from the attic, or you'll need to remove the entire fan housing from the ceiling in order to remove the old duct connector and replace it. Hope that helps.
