I think you cut the first Worf/Picard scene too soon. You missed the key line that sums up the episode: "the road from legitimate suspicion to rampant paranoia is very much shorter than we think." There's a narrow line between legitimate suspicion and rampant paranoia. Captain Picard is fine with the investigation while it is based on "legitimate suspicion" (there's an explosion, leaked classified information, and an actual spy). And even when they figure out Tarses is lying, it's still Ok to investigate that lie. He disagrees with Admiral Satie when she crosses the line, and starts assuming Tarses is guilty (and guilty of crimes that there is no evidence actually happened, not even an allegation). She is blinded by her racism, and her absolute certainty that she is right; if she is always right, nothing she does can be wrong, and anyone who disagrees with her must be a "traitor" or trying to destroy the country. Any evidence contradicting her can be dismissed as fake, or must be coming from a traitor. She claims to be a patriot and that those who oppose her are traitors, liars and corrupt, while she undermines the basic principles of the constitution by denying someone their basic rights and treating them inhumanely, partly because of their ethnicity. Investigations based on legitimate suspicion are fine, and should happen. If there is a credible accusation of something it should be investigated, especially if it involves those in positions of power. But we need "vigilance" to ensure those investigations don't cross the line. The second half of the episode is telling us to look out for the line and not to cross it, but the first half is reminding us that we shouldn't use the existence of the line as an excuse not to act when we do have legitimate suspicion. We shouldn't assume guilt as Satie does despite a lack of evidence, but we also shouldn't dismiss evidence and not investigate.

The last 7 years has been this - except freedom is losing. Even some of my closest friends describe freedom as freeDUMB. Its become quite shameful really. A mirror darkly.
The fact that so many "progressive" Star Trek fans are on the wrong side of this is horrifying.
The “woke” liberals use the word “cancel” but it’s really just 1950s-style blacklisting: Getting people fired from their jobs & then destroying his/her name so they can never work again

@@whitleypedia The fact that most of us are on the CORRECT side should maybe just maybe make you rethink your beliefs. I mean, i love the clip, it's beautiful but you posted it but everything single comment you make goes against all values cited there and in star trek in general.

The speech he gives in the girst episode of Picard about saving the Riomulans is... very much like this.
I find it interesting that the Romulans are intertwined with Picard's life much in the same way (though to a lesser degree) the Klingons were to Kirk's life.
The Picard show is shit. How dare you compare the two.
no it's not. That show isn't star trek. TNG is classic coke, that Picard stuff is mellow yellow
The speech is classic Picard… the rest of the show is shit & Roddenberry would hate it: “This is not the positive future I wanted to show everybody.”

I take it from pursuing the comment section that many of you feel as disappointed and even betrayed as I do, by what presents itself as modern science fiction.
I blame the same thing that is the theme of this episode. The spread of fear masked as righteousness that many in ivory towers are using to infuriate the masses against one another. That vile poison has seeped into everything we once held dear.
Hear hear !!!
Yep, today more than ever “those (villains) who clothe themselves in good deeds are well camouflaged”. Stay vigilant.
And the idiots currently in charge of the franchise are happy to go along with them.
Half expected Congressman Gerald Nadler, or Adam Schiff, to stand next to Admiral Satie and bang his gavel and interrupt Picard. "You are out of order!!"
Your think so! :)
Whitleypedia No.
It's not about left vs right, it's about authoritarian vs libertarian. Whichever side holds the authority will always be authoritarian and whichever side wants liberty from it will always be libertarian.
Star Trek writers today think they are upholding the values of the series by being woke and "tolerant", but they are just the villains who do not twirl their moustaches.

That's Star Trek, while Gene Roddenberry was still alive. He made sure the high standards were intact.
Roddenberry was very sick. He no longer ran TNG after season 1. He was just the figurehead, while Rick Berman was the actual man in charge
*stomps on Nora with her own father's words*
Today’s U S political climate
True north 30 you mean because president Trump is a xenophobic who would prefer there be no elections at all, and Picard is someone dutifully doing their duty to the constitution, ala Vindman, Schiff or Yovanovitch.
Maybe you should get a clue that the Federation is space socialism following the failure of capitalism and sit the fuck down, you creepy weirdo, perverting Trek for your own sad conservative beliefs that are in the minority.
Kujakuseki01 you are exactly what Picard was talking about.....sad.
Rick 1974 did I say republicans or democrats? All I said is “today’s U S political climate” and both of you guys loose your minds. It’s just sad...
Don Rit haha..right on Don!
@@Kujakuseki01 Star Trek isn't socialist. Only the ignorant would look at it and think it's socialist. Star Trek exists in a post-scarcity world. Replicators can provide the needs of everyone. not just ironic - genuinely horrifying
Very sad indeed
Rather worrying isn’t it.
SJW are made up villans. It is a snarl word for discrediting every form of emancipation of minorities and to stifle every debate about it.
And it has been quite effective. Especialy in galvanizing those who are afraid of a breach in their status quo.
In the long run it wont work. And it will leave those who unironicaly employ words like “SJW” embittered and lost.
@@savioschronberg3036 I'm glad it's been effective - but your analysis is otherwise flawed. Classical liberalism would embrace the "emancipation" that you talk about (which is good), but so-called "progressive" politics are all exclusively about empowering minorities to become oppressors themselves. "Embittered and lost" > becoming South Africa
