  • Fusion 360 CAD, CAM, and 4 Axis Machining. Let's walk through the process from design to chips, discuss setting up the WCS, how to use the NC Program feature to store post processor settings, and how to use multi-axis rotary and flow toolpaths. Today we're machining with the Tormach mciroARC 4! Not only is this really easy and quick to load into the machine, the microARC has a harmonic drive, which is great for reducing backlash.

    Thanks for the video. Just started playing with "Personal version" of Fusion 360. One thing that seems strange is I tried using the 2D contour like you used to make a simple bolt with a hex head and found that it wouldnt let me just machine the cylindrical feature where the threads will go ("can't wrap toolpath" ) but if in my model I only revolved my sketch 359 deg instead of a full 360 then it can unwrap the tool path?

    So, I've got an existing 8" superspacer 4th axis. Is the Microarc handy and useful enough to get in addition/replace the superspacer?
    I'll be honest, I avoid using it because it's a boat anchor and this just looks so handy. Plus the harmonic drive....

    I am trying to do a spiral flute with a key-way cutter using fusion and the contour setting but it will not let me use the side of any cutter when using a wrap technique. Am I doing something wrong or does fusion not allow something like this?

    • @xenonram
      @xenonram 4 года назад

      Use a ball EM in z. The reason you can't use a cutter with that profile, to cut a spiral, cutting in from the side, is because it just won't work. It'll be trying to cut in way too many directions at once. (Top, bottom, and periphery of the cutter.) As far as Fusion _LETTING_ you do that CAM path, I don't know whether it will let you, or why you can't get it to, but even if you were able to get the CAM down, it wouldn't work. If you have a mill that you can tilt the head, you can tilt it to the same helix angle, and use an EM to cut in from the side and do a spiral flirting operation.

      @@xenonram Currently I am using a ball emdmill in Z. There are companies that do what I am talking about with a radius keyway cutter, I guess it would technically be called a O ring grooving tool.

    According to tormach the throughbore dia on the micromark is 19mm or 0.748". Not really enough to do gunsmith work on barrels.

    • @xenonram
      @xenonram 4 года назад

      Tail stock, or some other support system on the other end, will solve that issue. Plus, most gunsmith barrel mill work, that you need rotational 4th axis, needs the whole barrel to be accessible. So putting it through the bore won't help with very much. Things like dovetail grooving for a front sight on a historical rifle, and maybe pinning a muzzle device, are two exceptions. But you don't need a 4th for that. I can't think of anything you'd need to do to a barrel on a 4th axis, where you wouldn't want the whole barrel exposed.

Fusion360 is an awesome CAM package with the 100k profit limit and even then the price isn't bad.
