    I actually experienced something similar when I started rock climbing a few years ago! It's so wild how doing little things can so heavily impact your ability as a musician!

    being in marching band for 5 years (and playing piccolo the whole time Dx) really does wonders for your stamia! never had to do PE cause Marching Band replaced it.

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  7 лет назад +3

      Oh man, how true!!! All I've ever heard from my marching band friends was how much of a workout it is! :D That's awesome!

    • @proudcommulist5384
      @proudcommulist5384 7 лет назад

      JustAnotherFlutist yeah, my max practice time is 6 hours cause of it. you have 3 hour rehearsals with marhing and playing, so when you remove the marching the playing stamia doubles.

    I'm so happy you talked about this! I didn't learn flute at school, but rather teaching myself and joining some bands. for years I wondered how to get better, and I happened to notice that after working out for a year, I can play my flute so much better. I can play longer between breaths, and vibrato is coming along. I find that is takes a strong core just to get a little vibrato. So I'm happy it's not just me and I can keep myself motivated to workout! if you wanna check out my channel, I just uploaded some videos of two school bands coming together for a fundraiser. My kids play trumpet and drums, I'm a proud momma.

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  7 лет назад

      YES YES YES to the "it takes a strong core just to get a little vibrato"!!!! This is probably the most confusing thing to teach about vibrato, and I'm so glad you discovered it for yourself! Kudos to you and your kids, that's awesome!

    To be fair, I've always tried to play the flute completely relaxed. But flexing the abs definitely makes a difference. Your videos are very helpful! Many thanks from England!!

    I noticed I have unbalanced finger muscles, too much flexion power vs weaker finger extensors. I nearly hit my own foot when I tried throwing darts LoL. // Yeah, body weight exercises are the best.

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  7 лет назад

      Oh gosh, don't hit your foot with a dart!!!! :P That aside, I didn't actually know that what I was doing was essentially body weight exercises--I just did them because they required the least amount of equipment (I was also too cheap to buy lots of exercise equipment XD). I only recently found out!

    I'm a pianist, but I think workouts will help with playing piano too. So I try to do exercises, but the problem is that I need to practice a lot, and I have lessons too, so I just don't manage to do it. That's a huge problem for me. Probably I could do workouts at evening, but then I am too tired to do anything that needs effort :\ How do you find right time regularly for that, can you help me with some advice? When you said that you workout almost everyday with 1 hour, I was impressed, because the maximum amount of time that I manage to workout is 30 minutes :\

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  7 лет назад

      I actually can't do full 1-hr workouts anymore, but I'll explain that in a different video (possibly on my side channel, JustAnotherVlaugist). I now do PIIT28 (linked in info box) because the actual workout is 28 min and 40 sec, plus a 5-min warm-up and a 10-min warm-down (stretches). I'm able to do the entire routine in 45-50 min, depending on how long of a break I need between rounds. Maybe this might work for you too? I can actually cram both the routine and a shower within an hour, so it's not too bad. :) Also, working out definitely helps with piano! The way my piano teacher taught me actually required a lot of core and butt strength, both of which I had none, so no wonder I was a weaker piano player! XD

    • @Suoyung
      @Suoyung 7 лет назад

      Yes, it does help! Not only with butt and core, but also hands. The problem is I don't do it regularly :< But when I do workout, even the little amount that I do, I immediately can feel the improvement in my piano practicing. I will definitely try your workout too!! Thanks!

    I had the same revelation with support this year. I used to think that you had to push your stomach out too, when you actually have to bring your stomach in when you exhale and engage your ab muscles or your core, like you said. Between my teacher and alexander technique, I've been relearning how to breathe all year. I really want to try the exercises on blogilates now!

    I'm a vocalist and being physically healthy is so important, and would be for all musicians who use their breath to produce sound in instruments. I second the idea of doing a video on Alexander Technique. I use it so much as a vocalist and am super interested on how instrumentalists use it!

    omg, I can relate to this so much! I'm 16 and also a very weak person. If I literally run like 10 feet i'll get tired or out of breath. Pretty much any normal basic exercise or physical activity that people can do effortlessly I struggle with. I'm underweight but other than that a healthy person nothing wrong at all I just have like no muscle mass. I'm in high school and I never took PE nor am I ever going to because band and choir kids receive a waiver for that. I've always wanted muscle and a toned body but I don't really commit to it. After like a week of exercising i'll stop and that's it. But seeing this, kind of makes me want to. Considering that it will also help with my playing.

    I've noticed a lot of flutists have intense workout regimes or just workout in general. My undergrad teacher did senior citizen water aerobics. My grad professor does tai chi and walks her dogs every morning. I jog 3 miles for about an hour six days a week. It helps so much in terms of flute endurance. I also cook all my meals too ^_^

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  7 лет назад +1

      It really does! Personally, I've noticed that more experienced flutists work out regularly, and I never really understood why until I started doing it myself. Crazy how much it affects my flute playing!

    This video is so inspiring! I think this is the perfect thing for my girlfriend and I especially since we've been in band for so long and hope to keep playing ( alto sax and euphonium btw :D ) after all of our educational endeavors. She has experience in dance and has been physically active for like all her life, buuuuuut, I have not. So for someone like me who wants to turn my life around and has something to finally kickstart their physical side, do you have any tips on how to start? Would love/appreciate any feedback because the blogilates seem intense and there are all sorts of videos so it's kinda confusing on where to start. Thanks again! :)

    Joanna : I wanted to get a bigger butt, so I stared doing exercise and accidentally got hooked. In the end I became thick again with the added benefit of becoming a better flutist.
    I'm sorry I just thought it was a little funny.

    I also thought that "support" meant pushing out my belly (I mean at least my teacher taught it to me that way)
    So I feel like I'm not doing it correctly. And I tried the abb thing but...
    I'll stick with pushing my belly out!
    Nice Video btw

    Hey Jo (you can also answer if you're another commenter; every last bit of information helps.)
    I hope you're alright
    Here's a situation:
    So
    You always say that the time you go through music school it's not enough to go through your instrumen's whole repertoire.
    Here's my concern:
    I only have 2 years of public music school (is a thing in my country) left before I go to the National Conservatoire, and I fear that if I don't go through my instrument's entire repertoire I'll never be able to find the rest of it.
    So here's my Q:
    If this happens, where can I find the rest of my instrument's repertoire and how?
    I'll be waiting for your response.
    Thanks.

    Wow! I didn't really work out much either when I was growing up and I'm Cuban. Cubans eat a lot of carbs and don't really eat vegetables. I went through puberty quite early and I was a bit on the chubby side when I was in my freshmen year of high school so I did marching band and between my freshman and senior year I lost about 12 pounds. Then, I started college and I gained like eight pounds and then around 2014 I started working out again. Then, when I did my junior recital for my Bachelors I gained a little bit of weight and by the end my mouth was dry and I was tired but in my senior recital I had more endurance and I was able to play for longer even though I had an intermission because my mouth got dry😃❤️🎼🎹

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  7 лет назад +1

      Hahaha, it's crazy how working out helps! I also come from a pretty high-carb diet (lots of rice, noodles, and my guilty pleasures are Shanghai food and dim sum, which are pretty much 80% carbs, hahahaha), so working out helped me keep the weight down after I lost it. Now I know why I always felt a little lethargic and tired (too many carbs! not enough protein!) and required so much coffee! My diet's pretty different now, thanks to my and my boyfriend's skin conditions, but I'm thankful! Healthy is always the best! ^_^
