Here we find the art of music and that of the violinist elevated to its highest dimensions. I cannot think of a more flawless live performance! I played both the cello and violin and can only say that both these men are what every classical performer aspire to. Flawless in their technic and in their artistic interpretation. Bruch could not have conceived of it being played any better. One day I hope to ask him!
6:20 - Bashmet's low note sounds like a duck going "squonk" to me haha. Sometimes his viola has these surprises. His low notes on the C string ca sound like a tenor vocalist bellowing their lowest note, it can sound like a bassoon, it can sound simply like a wonderful cello.... but other times it can make honk sounds and chalky sounds. The Testore viola (as he quotes from The Strad magazine) is "very difficult to play. I could play the Strad on the table next to the Testore and it was responsive immediately and very song-like, but unfortunately too big for me and I wouldn't have it for very long anyway. There was a beautiful Da Salò as a choice to be loaned to me but again it is much too big for my hands and would give physical problems to my arms and shoulders over the years". I also personally find that Bashmet's A string sometimes sounds like a flute. When a finger is pressing down particularly in third-position it can sound very operatic and flute-like and even reminiscent of a harp [if a harp could have a sustained bowed note]. Then on the other side of the A string's quality of sound.... it can just sound like sandpaper being dragged across a steel fence.... and when Bashmet plays an open A (especially with an open D next to it) it merely sounds like an accordion!!!! I think he is definitely using *all* steel strings across his viola. I think the D and A string are a brand called "Prim" with are actually very good for small violas, and Bashmet's viola is on the small side. It is deceptively big because it has a wide body. It is only a 15.5" inch viola. I would say beyond a 15.5" (such as a 15.25" viola) and you start to enter the world of "standard sized" violas. We all know there is no full size, but 16" - 16.5" is the most common range.
strange, the public doesn' get it. It's not a violin concerto, it's a double concerto for violin (originally clarinet) and viola. Both soloists are soloists, there is none superseding the other: so why does the violinist get all the flowers? Totally absurd. Bashmet partly plays much better than the violinist, his sound is what makes out the quality of the duet. It's time people understood viola is an instrument in its own right, with a sound much richer, much more mysterious and multifaceted than the straightforward ostentatious sound of the violin...
DIVINE MUSIC,PERFECT ARTITS,THANK YOU FOR POSTING IT.
Yuri Bashmet is out of this world. This is one of the concerts that I really wish I could‘ve been at.
this was my fathers music and I'm so glad I was his son and had a father, who loved Bruch so much...
Max Bruch - I never get tired of listening to his wonderful music.

0:00 mvt. 1 Andante con moto
8:35 mvt. 2 Allegro moderato
13:45 mvt. 3 Allegro Molto
Nathan Nguyen thank you sooo much
Magnifique interprétation !
Thank you so much, wonderful performance, I had forgotten how lovely Bruch can be. Such a good pulse all the way through.
Not sure why this piece isn't performed more often--lovely, yes?
It is originally for Clarinet and Viola pe4formed resaonanbly often in that (preferable) version. Of course Bashmet is wonderful!
Bravissimi....

Crowd chants "we want Bashmet" and they bow 5 times but Bashmet looks like he just wants to go home lol
Lol.. also, he wasn't really into flowers
o my GOD.
I love viola, don't kill me
