  • When I first heard the call of the grey francolin in the village of Punjab, I was immediately captivated. The sound was pure and melodic, filling the air with a sense of tranquility and beauty. Standing behind a house, I felt a deep connection to nature, as if the bird’s song was a personal serenade just for me. The experience was peaceful and profoundly moving, leaving me with a lasting appreciation for this remarkable bird and its enchanting call.
The call of the grey francolin is one of its most enchanting features. It is a series of clear, sharp whistles, often described as "ka-tee-tar-ka-tee-tar" or "katri chor katri chor." This call is not only a means of communication but also a beautiful melody that resonates through the environment. Typically heard during the early morning and late afternoon, the call of the grey francolin adds a unique charm to the rural landscape.
The Grey Francolin (formerly called Grey Partridge) is a common breeding resident game bird of India. They are grayish-brown game birds with short stubbed tail.
The grey francolin, also known as Francolinus pondicerianus, is a beautiful bird found in the plains and foothills of the Indian subcontinent. It has a distinct appearance with brown and grey plumage, streaked with black and white, providing excellent camouflage in its natural habitat.
Males have an anchor shaped black mark on throat that is absent in females. Males are larger than females.
During breeding season, male grey francolins call to attract challengers. Decoys were once used to trap these birds for fighting.
Grey Francolins are often observed in small groups, foraging on the ground.
