You wrote those words three- decades ago.
This has always been my very favorite song. I played it and sang it often. Looking back the song was just really beautiful. The music was unlike any other.
Decades later the song holds a new meaning, with a loss of innocense. It's a more haunting piece, and I sing it this way.

It doesn't fit the "rocker chick" image she had in the 70s and 80s. She was probably 35 or so when this came out, and had kids in school. "Rocker chick" was losing credibility I imagine. In fact, her next album, which bombed, was jump blues. Too bad, her voice was angelic at times in this one.

In 1998, I was working in Milwaukee, and I knew she was going to be playing in La Crosse, some 300+ miles away! All day I was contemplating driving to see her, and finally, I told my boss I had to go. So off I went to La Crosse, speeding like a mad man, not knowing if I could even get a ticket. Luckily, I was able to get a good ticket, and watched the end of Loverboy's set. Midway through Pat's set, she sang this song, and at the end where she "OH's", her voice hit such high notes that my hair stood on end. That had never happened to before, or since. It was worth every mile, including the drive back. About 700 miles total. Hey, if you need your Pat fix- just saying!

Once there was a man, and he lived to sing the lions song
As he traveled on the road of hope
One love is the light, shining over every mountaintop
It will lead us to the higher ground
One day every heart will beat strong against the night
Let it be done right now
Once there was a man, and his words became a song of love
And his song became the golden dream
One love is the light, shining over everyone that believes
It will lead us to the higher ground
One day every eye will see truth before the light
Let it be done right now
    Some wait, so long
    Because our love is strong
    This hard road traveled on
    Will lead us home, forever
Hear the lion's song, voices cryin' like a desert wind
Yeah he's gone unto his father's land
Afrika tonight, for we truly are one in our hearts
Colors woven in the golden dream
One day every eye will see truth before the light
Let it be done right now
One day every voice will speak strong against the night
Let us be one right now
    So let it be
We are the children of a thousand days
We are the people of the hard rain
We are the children of a thousand days
We are the people of the hard rain

***** Sorry it's taken me a bit to reply to you... I have a wacky schedule and lots of extra-curricular activities out building and upgrading firing ranges for the Army. As far as the song you mention "Too Long a Soldier", eh, I can't feel one way or the other about it really. I don't feel it relates a whole lot to how I served. Yes, I've seen man's cruelty to man. I've dealt some of it out to some people who (I feel) desperately needed it. I feel no remorse for any of the sharper things I've done in the service of my country (and the people of this world, for that matter). I've done what I have done in the defense of innocent people no matter where my travels (or my government) have taken me. I feel that I have fulfilled the oath of protection that I swore to faithfully, and honourably. I have defended the defenseless and rendered what aid I had to give to those who needed it whether they asked for it or not. Most times, the aid I rendered need not have been asked for: as I had seen it was simply needed!
I have been called vile and nasty things as a result. I have been threatened with physical harm and worse, also. As a younger man, those things used to get under my skin quite easily. Now-a-days... not so much. I have come to realize that most of the people issuing those insults and threats will never know the deprivations that I have endured to render my service. Therefore, most of what they have to say ring very hollow. The only one's that I feel that can judge me with anything near honesty are my fellow bretheren in the Infantry. Other than that... I'll wait for my real Commander-In-Chief at the big CP in the great beyond!
I don't mean to sound like I'm coming off as defensive or anything... I really didn't take offense to your question. I'm just trying to say what my state of mind is on the subject. I'll look up Leo and see what the story is. I really get positive inspiration from Hoo-ah stories of men who gave it their all, not expecting to make it through alive, only to find themselves coming out the other side still in one piece. Those men have my utmost respect! And to the people they served, protected, and made a world of difference to: I say bless you! Thank God they were there for you!
      Cheers, from Hacksaw!

***** I looked up Leo Major... holy moly, that man was certifiable! He recieved two Distinguished Conduct Medals (DCMs) for bravery. One in WWII, and one in Korea. He was actually put in for a DCM for single-handedly capturing 93 German Soldiers in the battle for Scheldt in southern Netherlands before his actions in Zwolle. He didn't want to recieve the medal from Bernard Montgomerey, so he refused it! That would have made three DCMs! That is the Canadian version of the Congressional Medal of Honor! Leo was one died-in-the-wool bad ass! I'm sure Leo would have just replied that he was just doing his job as a Soldier... most men of his stature in combat would say such. But to be associated with Leo Major would be a distinct honor, and an endless source of satisfaction. I'm sure that for Leo, the knowledge of having made such a difference for you and yours would have endlessly warmed his heart and boueyed him with pride and thankfulness for being of service to you. I'm glad that you and yours had Leo for a guardian angel when you needed him most.

I thank Pat Benatar not for the music, but for the rock'n'roll! She's the queen of rock! I love her voice! Too bad XM radio doesn't have a station dedicated to playing only her songs just as Bruce Springsteen does. Perhaps I should start a petition. ;-)
