Oh man, this really takes me back. I got an SNES for Christmas of 1993, so 1994 was a big year for me. Mega Man X, Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid, Mortal Kombat II and NBA Jam all still hold a very special place in my heart.

Have you heard of a romhack called "Sonic 3 Complete"? Aside from "Sonic 3 A.I.R.", "S3 Complete" is a definitive way to play the game; it's like "Sonic and Knuckles Collection" playing on the Genesis, with the difficulty variants from "Sonic Jam" ported in. It also has a shitload of customization choices...

With Shining Force and Lunar making this list you seemed to be an RPG fan..... of sorts, but I was *VERY* shocked to not see Final Fantasy VI (ff3) or Earthbound on this list! Were you just trying to be nice to Sega and include a couple of theirs? I know you included a lot of SNES titles (which made sense) but is that why you left out FF3 and Earthbound for the SNES? Those two games are not only the best RPG's of 1994, but with the exception of Chrono Trigger they are the greatest RPG's of all time. Other than that, pretty great list.

I'm a HUGE fan of the original Doom games and still play them sometimes. In retrospect, though, Doom II hasn't aged very well. The level design relies way too heavily on pulling switches and using teleporters, often with no clue what the result is going to be. It maybe isn't quite as bad as the original Heretic and Hexen, which both included a large number of switches that had no visible effect; then you usually had to backtrack the entire level to find out if anything had changed.
I was guilty myself of the same thing at the time, though. I made a number of Doom WADs and one of them was even called "Fun With Switches" because it was all about pulling switches with no way to know in advance what they did. Maybe at that time there was a certain novelty to it, but nowadays I really prefer the original Doom where the level design is a lot less confusing.

You'll probably have to unfortunately. It's looking more and more like the classic kickstarter scam. They've had engine changes, delays, "visuals" of dubious authenticity... basically everything you usually get when no game is actually in production.
Look, System Shock was my favorite game of all time for over a quarter of a century. ("Horizon: Zero Dawn" dethroned it last year.) I wanted this to work. But I'd really advise against getting your hopes up. I hope I'm wrong about this because System Shock with a modern engine and controls sounds incredible. :(

@@SvenElven in the UK they pronounce Bowie like "ow!" "taking a bow" for the audience" because that's the correct pronunciation and why it was silly that he named his son Zowie Bowie (whose director name is Duncan Jones). When Bowie made it big overseas, radio djs and fans pronounced it as "BOE-ee" (rhymed with snowy) and he just kinda said "fuck it" and went with it.

@@CrowTRobot Really?!? Do you have to be a diehard fan to know this or..? Cause I must have heard a thousand British people pronounce Bowie rhyming with «snowy».

      @@CrowTRobot According to the BBC:
«His stage name is pronounced "Boh-wee", to rhyme with doughy or Joey. Anyone who pronounces it "Bow-ee", to rhyme with Howie or Towie, is wrong.»
Also, it was apparently originally intended to be pronounced «Booey» like the American knife guy (from whom David took his stage name)!

I don't consider Doom 2 just like mindless action and there are a lot of differences in level design between Doom 1 and 2.. and the new weapon (super shotgun) and the avaiability of the bfg from the start and the new enemies.. the feeling of the gameplay is kind of completely different from Doom 1.

But... but sonic literally had a truly good game come out last year? Frontiers was a return to form but people would rather shit on the series, particularly an entry that came out more than 15 years ago that everyone has moved on from. I guess if it fits your narrative...
