    I hadn't realized that this isn't part of your living science series until just now. I don't often comment on youtube but this is more amazing material. You should think about touching up the scripts to take out the creationist bits. Are those graphics from the phylogeny explorer project? Cause they're great. I've always wanted to ask you how you constructed your definition of primates in FFoC 10 or 11 (I always forget and make my friends watch both...) So the answer is... You did the footwork. Arranging it into a website is one thing, but there has got to be some compilation or well edited volume you're working from... You can't get all this from original sources can you? I mean that would be millions of sources...
    And since I don't know your method that works so well, I really really want to hear you extend the definition to monkey so we can put this to bed once and for all.

    "Around 1900 they added the rank of domain." This means my HS biology classes were already hopelessly outdated. We were taught kingdom/phylum/class/order/family/genus/species, though there was some (somewhat apologetic) talk of super- and sub- levels. This seems one more example of "everything you learned in grade school was wrong", or as the philosopher Simon put it "all the crap I learned in high school".
    This series has been quite interesting, though some goes straight to the bit bucket. I was curious about the challenge nature of the closing remarks on each episode. I realize there are people who reject science, and particularly evolution, but just how big a part of the videos' audience do you expect them to be? I would expect this to mainly appeal to people like me, who accept science but are woefully ignorant about biology. Then again, the bit about having people name as many animals as they can think of made me think of plenty of non-chordates.

    Just talked with my sister around some beers that olfactory system has to be one of the oldest input systems in vertabrates. Reson being that even some fish can remember in wicth river they were born by smell. An example being thatthe Vantaa river in Helsinki was polluted and the cleaning started in -80's with building a fish ladder beside the damn. You could not dismatle the damn as that would destroy the new ecology of the bay in front of the river. So, some salmon found the ladder and breeded (sp?) on the upstream river. So some of their ofspring must have smelled the water coming from the ladder as their "home" as more and more salmon started to raise onto the river. Now there is healthy enough population on the river so fky fisshing is allowed there.
    On the other hand both me and my sister has a peculiar smell reaction: if we smell fresh urine smell our mouth start to water. That's because it reminds us when our mothr prepared cow kindneys for dinner. We both love kidneys as food still.

    This is mainlining a university upper level bio/zoology class notes. Pared to the essentials and delivered as fast as I can manage to hear. When did cladistics become a thing? It was barely mentioned when I was an undergrad.

    • @whatabouttheearth
      @whatabouttheearth 2 года назад

      "The original methods used in cladistic analysis and the school of taxonomy derived from the work of the German entomologist Willi Hennig, who referred to it as phylogenetic systematics (also the title of his 1966 book); the terms "cladistics" and "clade" were popularized by other researchers. Cladistics in the original sense refers to a particular set of methods used in phylogenetic analysis, although it is now sometimes used to refer to the whole field.[7]
      What is now called the cladistic method appeared as early as 1901 with a work by Peter Chalmers Mitchell for birds[8][9] and subsequently by Robert John Tillyard (for insects) in 1921,[10] and W. Zimmermann (for plants) in 1943.[11] The term "clade" was introduced in 1958 by Julian Huxley after having been coined by Lucien Cuénot in 1940,[12] "cladogenesis" in 1958,[13] "cladistic" by Arthur Cain and Harrison in 1960,[14] "cladist" (for an adherent of Hennig's school) by Ernst Mayr in 1965,[15] and "cladistics" in 1966.[13] Hennig referred to his own approach as "phylogenetic systematics". From the time of his original formulation until the end of the 1970s, cladistics competed as an analytical and philosophical approach to systematics with phenetics and so-called evolutionary taxonomy. Phenetics was championed at this time by the numerical taxonomists Peter Sneath and Robert Sokal, and evolutionary taxonomy by Ernst Mayr.
      Originally conceived, if only in essence, by Willi Hennig in a book published in 1950, cladistics did not flourish until its translation into English in 1966 (Lewin 1997). Today, cladistics is the most popular method for inferring phylogenetic trees from morphological data.
      In the 1990s, the development of effective polymerase chain reaction techniques allowed the application of cladistic methods to biochemical and molecular genetic traits of organisms, vastly expanding the amount of data available for phylogenetics. At the same time, cladistics rapidly became popular in evolutionary biology, because computers made it possible to process large quantities of data about organisms and their characteristics."

    I go through years worth of work persuading "Ken Ham" types to watch debunking videos and they are looking for any excuse not to watch, including cursing and profane language. Therefore, please cool it with the profanity. I don't want them to run away on a flimsy excuse. Apologetics is based on logical absurdities, and easing the process of them learning how to think rationally will go a long way to curing them of the faith virus.

    As always, I love Aron's stuff. However, I do want to point out the obvious. If intended as "preaching to the choir," then the staccato, machine-gun delivery of information is probably okay. However, if you are intending to actually teach or change any minds, this "drinking from the firehose" approach is doomed to fail. (That may be a lost cause anyway in 99% of the cases.)

    okay, okay we get it, you hate religious people. As a person who believes in evolution I was really looking forward to this series but as someone who also believes in God I really don't need to hear about your disdain for me. Maybe you should stick to the subject and stop going off on a tangent. All the other evolution videos I watch don't feel need to constantly bring up Creationism. I can find this info other places where people don't feel the need to constantly remind me of how stupid I am. I will miss the good parts of your teachings.

    • @timpieper5293
      @timpieper5293 4 года назад +8

      Mikel 666 it’s weird that you interpret his criticisms of creationism as hate for all religious people or calling people who believe in a god “stupid”. It might make a little bit of sense if you were a creationist who misinterpreted such a thing, but you’re not even denying the science he’s presenting, so it’s really unclear how you got there.
      Maybe come back when you realize the closest Aron ever gets to criticizing general theism, in this series, is when he points out how unintelligently designed biological organisms are, which you shouldn’t have a problem acknowledging since you accept evolution.
