The first time, I heard this episode was in 1976 on a cassette tape that I checked out from my local library. I remember reading in John Dunning's "Tune In Yesterday, A History of Old Time Radio" that this episode was broadcast in the final days of old time radio and this story was left to your vivid imagination. It could only be heard on radio and your mind had to visualize this story . Well, anyway, I still enjoy listening to this radio program even though I know how the story ended.
Pohl has always been one of my favorite SF authors! Just finished the book Astounding...about the origin of the Golden Age of Sci-Fi...greatly recommended!
Sometimes when I hear the broadcast date is in the '50's on these recordings, I get a little sad, as it means the end of old time radio was nearing, but I also must say, the quality of the shows, the script, performances were so good and polished that the result is a masterwork like this episode. Thank you for sharing it with us. 🙏Also Frederick Pohl has just become a writer I will remember and look for more stories by. This could have been a predictable plot, but that "little" twist at the end, I did not see coming.
"It was the morning of June 15th, and Guy Burkhardt woke up ... screaming." This was one of the scariest X Minus One episodes I ever heard, and I hadn't read the Frederik Pohl short story at the time I first heard it in the 70s. Dang, I did NOT see that ending coming, but it all makes sense. This really shows where radio is superior to television. Radio, you can hide the finale. Television, you would have to spell it out, and it would lose all its power. It is now one of my favorite adaptations.
It is a snapshot of when America was in her prime. Like I commented before, after all night every night you forget our country is out of control. Like I said, this kind of propo will have to all be destroyed for the new world 😟
So the big boss guy was completely prepared to play his advertising mastermind game -- with all the computer equipment and programming knowledge, and all the biotechnical wizardry to harvest people's consciousnesses -- before the explosion wiped everybody out? Everybody except him, that is? How did he know to be in his nuclear-blast-proof bunker at the right time, with everything set up and ready to go at the exact right time to grab all of those consciousnesses as the atomic fireball roared through? Oh, that's right. This is fiction.
Its bad when a benign comment is censored. More and more, its pointless to comment or read them because they're not real if not of the individuals mind and heart.🤨
@@OTRR Well, I took the time to comment a heart felt bunch of words . Went back to correct and gone ? Might be my end however, I have been seeing this quite often. I most certainly apologize if I'm wrong, its just I'm sensitive to censorship and it is rampant.
@@OTRR If not you, not me then its a third-party. I'm a horrible writer, so I edit alot if I catch. More and more when I try to edit, gone or maybe moved to a database where its listed under your name. Certain terms, words or maybe a group of phrases defiantly gets comment deleted.

From a brilliant short story by Frederik Pohl. Authors must be credited!
On a very similar theme, Simulacron 3 by Daniel F. Galouye is recommended.
I LOVE the twist ending. I definitely didn't see that coming! Thanks for posting this!
It’s 6/15/2021 while I’m listening to this.
It's 12/08/2023 while I'm reading your comment.
The reveal is totally unexpected.
What an imagination.

Top story! I read it some time ago in a Frederick Pohl Best Of book.
This was phenomenal
Marvelous
Guy Berkhart. The original Don Draper.
Tops! - P.K. Dick meets T. Sturgeon.
The origin of all those "Groundhog Day" rip offs.
☢️ Thank You!
Wow!

Just like groundhog day.
and the matrix as well
Only a good bit more terrifying. By the way, Dark City is a better parallel than the Matrix.
Is it if we reference America being great ?🤔
