Hello Neighbor vs. OMORI: How One Failed and Another Succeeded

Hello Neighbor by Dynamic Pixels and OMORI by Omocat are two horror games with very similar lore. Two siblings loved each other, until the brother pushed the sister to her death in a tragic accident. If OMORI made me care about Sunny and his story, why couldn’t Hello Neighbor make me care about Mr. Peterson and Nicky? Why was Something so effective in symbolizing fear, and the Thing wasn’t? These are questions I answer in this video essay.

The problem with hellow neighbor is once they got a taste of game theory they startred to try to design the entire game around being theory bait instead of making a good plot
Yeah. Interesting, why they won't put the name of the sequel "hello again, neighbor"? And... Who even asked for sequel?
@@Amenord2015the people who wanted to make money
@@Mimiyan_or_Pikapikafan People? You mean creators of hello neighbor?
@@Amenord2015 Yes, they are people who made money from creating the game/sequel.
In the early alpha stages of the game, many game theorists where trying to exploit the game with parkour and explore the hidden parts of the map. The devs mistook this boundary pushing as “desired game mechanics” and put parkour into their game. This wound up breaking the original core attraction to the game; The neighbor’s AI.

Here's what I think:
In the case of Hello Neighbour, the story was made for the game.
But in the case of Omori, the game was made to tell the story.
Well said my friend
That's exactly what happened. Omori started as a webcomic called Omoriboy. When Omocat wanted to progress the then almost non-existent story of the comic, she decided the only way it would work would be as a game.
@@greenhydra10 mhm
fun fact, omocat started development on omori in 2014 (you can see even then in the teasers she had the full story we see today realized), and decided not to play or watch any games within that time to not taint her original vision of omori, which ended up being in 2020, hella dedicated
so she’s not inspired, just a neat coincidence
Omori having been developed since 2014 is true but what is your source for the fact she didn't play any game? I never heard of that before and it honestly doesn't seem very believable
@@ramhthewatermelon
thought i heard her say it herself but i’ll see if i can find the source, i’ll be back with it in a min my guy
@@ramhthewatermelon but i do recall her talking on twitch about a lot of the games she finally ended up playing after finishing development on omori
@@snowy.skulll I watched her streams too but all I recall is her just saying which games she plays, not necessarily that she played them once Omori was released 🤔
@@ramhthewatermelon ruclips.net/video/4EKsfRXFgUM/видео.html here it is
When I was younger, I always thought hello neighbor was just one of those games the “cool gamer kids” played to show they were brave. (Kind of like how everyone was playing Granny because it was “ooh!! spooky!!”) I never thought that much of it and honestly even wondered why people even liked it. During quarantine, I discovered OMORI. This was the first ever “story” game I’ve ever played. Omori impacted me so much and virtually shaped my life. I never knew hello neighbor even had a story not to mention one so similar to Omori, guess I was right for ignoring HN and jumping on Omori instead
If you're looking for other story games similar to omori that left a huge impact on other people I really recommend Undertale 👍
the last of us 1 and 2 has a rlly good story too! though it's gameplay isnt nearly as similar as omori or undertale lmao
Lucky timing, I literally just finished OMORI a few days ago. I used to play Hello Neighbour when I was younger and it looks so much more goofy to me now than it did before.
Same! After I downloaded Hello Neighbor I took a five-year break and only got reminded of it when the second game came out
omori truly holds a special place in my heart, great video essay
Thanks Kevo! It holds a special place in my heart, too!
Who is this kevin weirdo i bet hes like a discord mod or something
oh and omori had *mewo*
which is very important
When I was younger I didn’t even know hello neighbor was even supposed to be about trauma and overcoming fears I barely even understood the shadow figure thing and just thought it was another character to add to the “horror” of the game😟
I have done a _lot_ of research into this sort of stuff and still didn't understand what the "story" was about until this video lmao
on the whole "shielding yourself from your childhood trauma" thing, i never really liked the trope of portraying trauma as like this Big Bad monster you gotta defeat and then its over and you never have to deal with it again, because thats not how trauma works. thats why i liked omoris good ending so much. because it acknowledges that. it never acts like sunnys just Untraumatized now, its more like "life isnt going to stop throwing hurdles at you just because you decided to recover. its going to suck, youre going to regress, and youre never gonna stop struggling. but that doesnt mean things cant get better. you can be happy in spite of it."
sunny is always going to be traumatized. hes not done dealing with it. he is taking the FIRST STEP towards recovery. its not hopeless or unrealistic, its bittersweet. and as someone thats gone through similar things to sunny, it meant a lot to me. changed my wordview a bit. hello neighbor _couldve_ done that, but they arent asking people to pay 30 dollars for a good story.
I agree with you, OMORI actually understands what trauma is and can deal with heavy topics. I have my own little Omori bastard in my mind, it's a different case with Omori, but I've learnt many ways to deal with him
Omori had actual love and passion, Hello Neighbor didn’t.
fax, have this sticker
It did at first, but the rising popularity got to the devs heads and they stopped caring lol
The problem was that hello neighbor never actually committed to anything and constantly changed its mind on what it wanted to be. While omori, clearly knows what kind of game it wanted to be and what kind of story it was trying to tell.
Hanging with the Boys never hit me until you mentioned it. My favorite piece of subtle foreshadowing has to be from the Underground Maze in Orange Oasis. At the end of the maze, you find a poster with a jumprope lying under it that says "You did it! :)". It hit me on a second playthrough.
OH MY GOSH
@@berylanisoptera6727 I know, right??
That thing triggered so many different feelings inside of me!!!
Fr
One that was pointed out to me was in one of the artworks, Basil's head covers Sunny's right eye.
The "plot" of Hello Neighbor was definitely tacked on for MatPat to make theory videos about. The creator even outright asked him to "review" the game, iirc. It would've worked a LOT better if it had just stuck to being gameplay-focused and puzzle solving with an AI enemy that learns your tricks along the way.
That said, it is interesting how these two games have basically the exact same plot, but one of them made it work whereas the other failed.
HN pursued the clout while omori just wants to finish the product, also kid audiences are usually a corrupting influence in any indie title
They don't have the same plot
Me after playing omori: this games was scary and sad and happy at the same time WTF?!
Exactly.
i know this is stupid to say in a comment section on a hello neighbor vs omori video but i really agree with your points on how omori can change your outlooks on life, this goddamn rpg game saved me from killing myself over guilt and loss, holy crap, it also taught me to control my actions and impulse, its a really deep and good game also I FUCKING LOVE AIR CONDITIONING!!!!
I'm glad you're better now. Omori has helped me through some dark times as well. I love air-conditioning too ;)
if it wasnt for omori, I wouldnt have realized that i needed to combat my social anxiety and i made 2 friends i wanted to make and the main reason i made friends with one of them was because we both liked omori :)
Well, One's a suicidal child, and one's a adult who doesn't want you in his basement. I don't think this needs explaining.
omori: depressing, made people cry, open ended
hello neighbor: lets make a game with no plotpoints being made well and put all our effort into the intro and making people pay money
that explains why the characters look like shit (I am refering to hello neighbor)
Hello Neighbor had a story?
Lmao, I remember watching those gameplays and only thinking: "Haha funny game of goofy neighbor".
(Also the Hello Neighbor neighbor holding the shovel is an Omari AU reference hehe funny sister shovel dig dig)

Damn, all the Hello Neighbour kids are going pissed about this (And yes, they are kids, no one in their teens let alone adulthood would like this game)
Lol real
The story of hello neighbor carries lol
And yet omori still better at that terms
Not even the FNF kids would like this and that's saying A LOT
I think they've grown up by now
Then i am an exception
As an OMORI fan who remembered when Hello Neighbor first got played by the big ogs like CoryKenshin, the story of Hello Neighbor had so much potential, and yet the devs SCREWED IT in hopes of MatPat making a video on their game for more attention. I’ve learned about OMORI being about a story Omocat was passionate about that she and her team faced years of hardship, being called scammers and even controversy during the shaky production of the game. Omocat was even told in art school how video games would never become true art and wanted to take on this unwritten challenge and showcase her art in her video game.
I played OMORI when I thought everyone was against me and even when I saw let’s plays to assess if I can handle the triggers, I still managed to cry when I got to the true ending.
Hello Neighbors story was all over the place. It just felt like everything was made excruciating difficult just to elicit reactions from let’s players and I only stuck to watching the game because that gameplay was not for me.
The two games show that EXECUTION OF A CONCEPT MATTERS when you want to make a piece of media matter. They have the same concept of TRAUMA but how each dev went about to telling a tale of trauma in their games differed a whole lot.

I also really enjoyed Hello Neighbor when I was younger, but really only because my favorite youtubers played it. Omori is something I got into a year ago and have played through it at least 5 times. I used to be a very terrible person in my opinion only like 2 years ago I'd say. To me, Omori helped me learn that a bad action doesn't make you a bad person, but also helped me develop my very underdeveloped sense of sympathy, empathy, remorse, etc. Overall, Omori great, Hello Neighbor ok, and (insert Mari being pushed down the stairs joke).
Also great video.
Woah, I kinda forgot that Hello Neighbor even existed
It’s basically a fever dream in my mind

I liked hello neighbor story but it didn't got better in hello neighbor 2, it's just a ending as I far know, and they also added supernatural stuff
Omori trailer was made in 2014, and Omori was planned in 2011, So Omocat couldn't have based it off of something in 2017, lol.
I've seen a lot of game comparisons for Omori. Like OFF or Earthbound. And even Boisvert's Analog Horror.
Never would I think of Hello Neighbor ever, but it makes sense. But in reality one is a modern classic video game. the other is Hello Neighbor, a game with *one* really good scene. and the rest is Hello Neighbor.

hello neighbor was *meant* to be about nicky's trauma, at least in the release. he was more than likely abuysed as a kid with the fear sections being representative of those moments. at least thats my guess cause the game didnt even make that clear

I clicked because I was offended. How does Omori have the same story as hello neighbor!? OMORI IS AMAZING!! H O W!?!?!?
IKRR??
Wow I didn't realize how similar these games were. I wouldn't say Omocat tried to make Hello Neighbor better though. OMORI was kickstarted back in 2014 while Hello Neighbor was released in 2017.
I did a challenge on my first playthrough of omori that consisted in not getting scared or sad during the game, i almost lost that challenge at the final duet cutscene. After that i am devastately crying after duet plays. Omocat, you reduced me into tears
the thing about hello neighbor is that its not about Aaron or in vice versa Mya's death, its ALL about Thedore aka the neighbor, and the concept of Mya being pushed to her death was just used as a way to push the plot forward and not really focused on. in the new HNVR game they really go into how what happened effected Aaron, and what he does to redeem himself after what he did. it also goes deeper into how Aaron kind of hates himself after what he did to Mya. I feel like they couldn't see past the money and theory bait in the 1st HN. but with the newer games they explore the story more. in HN2 they go mainly into Theadore and Aarons relationship and how Mya's death broke it, but there relationship gets fixed by the end of the game (even if HN2's gameplay is worse than the first games) HNVR has a good story, as it goes into how Mya's death effected Aaron on a deeper level (and the gameplay isn't a nightmare)
I haven’t gotten a chance to play the second Hello Neighbor game yet, but a deeper explanation of the story sounds really interesting. In hindsight I may have been a little biased, haha. May I ask what HNVR is?
@@lucinda_null HNVR (aka hello neighbor search and rescue) follows Nicky's friend's as they try to break into the neighbors house to save him after he was kidnapped in act 1. I'm not sure if you want to know the full story, so I wont go into spoiler territory
I never realised that the neighbours name was mr Peterson until this video 💀
Omori is amazing. It is so long and makes you feel like friends with it, but not with all the fun parts, with all experiances, trauma, emotions and more.
Also i think the dream about the supermaret in hello neighbour represents fear of crowds and overwhelming situations.
I personally really liked the story of Omori. I think the ending was very well executed. Though the pacing was annoying I think it's fair to assume it enhanced many qualities of the game. I think the simpler artstyle also helped. The characters were also pretty charming and had fleshed out roles and personalities.
I haven't played nor seen much of Hello Neighbor, so I can't comment much on it. Though, I think it's fair to assume both of these games have something that makes them special.
[1:13] The game has a good story going at first, then. FGTEEV played the game, which made Tinybuild and DynamicPixels realize that kids, are willing to spend more money on this game than adults. Which made it go the typical horror game route with murder and kids. (WHAT IS IT WITH INDIE HORROR GAMES AND DEAD PEOPLE?!)

Omori started development in late 2011 actually... the long (extremely long) development was because it had too much depth, too much meaning, too much story to include. The exact opposite of hello neighbor which just kind of tossed in some theory bait into a game who's appeal was the glitches of the beta and unknown potential mysterious story.

Hello neighbors pacing was horrible, honestly. It was first a silly horror game that gave itself a story, and that's where it went downhill. While omoris gameplay somewhat plays along with the story, hello neighbors doesn't. Its gameplay felt clunky over time and made almost 0 sense to catch up with and repeatedly tried getting matpats attention was another of its downfalls. While Omoris story took years to finish and that's why it's so amazing, it was worked on little by little and actually felt heartwarming and sad with the added music in the background. Something I don’t like about Hello Neighbors appeal was how ugly the characters look, and I’m not a person who thinks that a ugly art style can’t be well done, because Little Nightmares specifically makes characters and the world creepy by deforming and manipulating the designs of humans to become these horrifying abominations that chase our cute characters, and it’s our cute characters that turn out to be the thing that disturbs us the most, especially at the end of the games when it reveals the truth about Six, Mono, The runaway kid, and The girl in the yellow raincoats stories and how they end up. And it doesn’t feel like the characters in Hello Neighbor were made to look unappealing for the sake of theme, or to match the art style, but more like they didn’t know how to make child characters so they just got the adult characters heads and attached them to their characters bodies. It looks disgusting, and not in a way that helps the story or the design of the game.

little nightmares was purposfully disgusting hello neigbour is unintentionally ugly
@@L-W-ko1hn THANK YOU. They do it to disturb the audience, and when there is a cute character we either watch them die/have a fate worse than death, or see them become the villain and it’s so extra disturbing.
