It depends how technical you want to get !! A shovel would have one piece contacting the ground or the coal and would pick up using a forward motion. These are more of a "grab" picking up with two pieces coming together. I hope that makes sense! If you want to see a shovel in action, take a look at this - ruclips.net/video/Hux-_G8OmSM/видео.html although this one isn't steam powered. It was (I think) electrically powered - Andy
Apparently, loco numbered 4335 and marked Made in England was originally China Rail "MG8 4335" built by Wilkes-Barre at Vulcan Iron Works (works number 2433), USA in 1918. It's current status is not known.
If there's someone out there that would like to own 4335 ... just let me know. My wife and I will be out there in November. We'll go up to Daban and see if she's still available. I'm certain we could arrange to get her back to the USA. We did ship a C2 0-8-0 from China to the UK a few years ago. Just say the word!
You shipped an 0-8-0? Damn. Well why don't you get 4335 before the Chinese scrap her? Plenty of museums here would love to have her, considering there are 6 operating chinese locos in the states, 3 QJ's and 3 SY's I think we could take an American built steamer back from the Chinese. Like they would care, she's scrap metal to the Chinese. You should bring her back regardless. If you offered a Vulcan engine to any museum their ears would perk up. Vulcan locos are not that common in the states anymore, espcially larger models like this one.
***** I'm going to Inner Mongolia with my wife (who's from there) in November. I'll try to get up to Daban depot to see if 4335 is still there. Need somebody to pay for it and its shipping though. Do what you can for me!!
There are already a few of the QJ class 2-10-2s saved around the world. That US built mogul, I think, is probably unique. My wife hails from a few miles down the road from there, so I'm hoping to be able to check out its current condition some time soon.
There are 2 steam cranes visible in this sequence. There are still a few around today but they're very few and far between! Plenty of them lying around out of use !
I'd be more interested in saving the nice 2-10-2 shown in most of the video. That's a beauty! :) But the historical significance of the mogul is undeniable.
Nice thought but this is classic Baldwin, Alco etc. ... probably 1920s or 1930s. Cylinders and tender bogies are unmistakeably American. I can't find any records about the locomotive but I'm sure somebody out there will know!
It's good but I've seen so many railways around the world which would make super train sets. I'm building one based on the Durango & Silverton / Cumbres & Toltec ..... Andy
This whole line was mind blowing. Please look at some of my other videos of trains climbing over the mountain range. Sadly, it's all dieselised now, although they've kept a few of these QJ's that they steam very occasionally.
Well, yes, I guess it's a sort of locomotive. It is, as you say, self propelled but it's not built to move goods or people so isn't there to provide "locomotion". Maybe we're being a bit picky!! It's a fine machine that's for sure. We visited this depot again in November 2018 to take a look and they still have at least one of these steam cranes there, but not working. Andy
The last I saw it (2018) it was on display inside a facility at a nearby resort being developed by the local government. Of course, Covid hit soon afterwards so the whole project may well have been scrapped ... Andy
Yes Jared. It's sitting inside a museum/restaurant in Reshui (this is a town well known to steam fans a few miles from Daban). It has been cosmetically repainted ........ Andy
@@AndyDandanFisherSteam One doesn't rule out the other, a steam boiler can run on diesel oil. But I think the whole reason for them to keep these old machines is that they run on coal and they have a coal mine.

All Chinese steam locos have been fitted with both horns and whistles for some years now. The whistles tend to be used for longer distance warning as the sound carries better. Around a yard, they tend to use the horns more.
Those days on the JiTong line in Inner Mongolia were amazing. Sadly, this is now all dieselised although they've kept a few of the big QJ locos steamable for special events.
Those were common in New Zealand and Australia until the mid 70's . Often used to re railing trains or locos that ha come off the tracks. In 2021 Morrison has upset his mates in beijing so those coal piles will be looking pretty low by now.
On a visit to Daban depot in November 2018, I discovered that they still had in excess of 10 QJ's although only 2 of these could be steamed with just a little work. They have a QJ and a steam crane plinthed at the entrance to the depot. The US mogul is now on display inside a museum/restaurant in the nearby town of Reshui. There is talk of making part of the line into a tourist line. I doubt this will happen. Andy
Thank you Sebastian. The sights on the JiTong Railway were certainly wonderful but it's all dieselised now I'm afraid. If you'd like to steam that's still there today (only just), take a look at this link - ruclips.net/p/PLNKEdhmODMJxI2j-Vg4jtbeZqw2GfatEM
I agree about the pollution entirely. However, there are now hardly any steam locos left in the world. Their impact is tiny. The real damage is done by road vehicles and the generation of electricity. I'm guessing that you have a car and take hot showers - the same as I do !! We're all guilty .... not the handful of steam locos left working.
How cool this was with not only Steam Cranes, but also China still using Steam Locomotives before 2022-2024.

love the sights and sounds and the steam ohm myyy.

There's a thing with these old steam beauties that are still working hard and treated like regular machines in an era where they're one of a kind.

it COULD be england. they built 4-8-4s for china that were pretty american looking

I guess the country with the most coal in the world can allow itself to be nostalgic (especially if it's this convenient).
they buy the most coal in the World because most of what they have is not suitable for making steam.
why horns not whistles ?
