In this live stream I will be discussing how the physical properties of light transmission in water interact with Kokanee's physiological vision constraints and ability and how that ultimately impacts what colors you should be using when targeting Kokanee. This will help you understand why pinks, reds, and oranges have become the standard Kokanee colors and why you might want to explore other color options depending on conditions.

You are by far the best kokanee content producer! I really appreciate the solid info that has allowed me to be successful in a new to me fishery.
Agreed. I still struggle a bit specifically with kokanee on my local waters (large, hydrostatic lake) but have been able to tweak the concepts a bit to help me focus on Rainbows and have been seeing dramatic improvements in my catch rate and catch quality.
This is why spilt milt is the best fishing channel on RUclips. Not just entertaining but informative and educating us on how to think like a fish 💯 thanks Tyler!!
Just saw this one this morning while drinking coffee. How did I miss this one?? You are a valuable source of information! You should write a book. Thank You!!
We just started a small online business this year. I know we are a bit late to the party, but we can accommodate your request for blue, purple, fluorescent and glow in the dark dodgers. We handcraft each dodger and design them especially for Kokanee. You have motivated & educated us many times throughout the past few years. It would be our pleasure to partake in this theory.
Tyler, once again you have produced another absolutely incredible video. Thank you guys for all you do. Joel Ulam
Thanks Joel 👍
I really appreciate how much you support my channel.
@Spilt Milt Productions Tyler, You got me for life my friend you. I grew fishing for everything out of wood driftboat and at 57 I still fish for everything out of a driftboat (sometimes i hate it, fnn wind lol). My point is I have used so much of your teaching from wiring boat stuff, lithium battery stuff, colors, gear etc. etc (I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH FROM YOU) cant thank you enough. My point is you touch a hell of alot more folks than just kayak fishermen and I mean ALOT more. I told Jen that we need to plan 5 day trip this summer to NE Oregon and eastern Washington sight seeing, fishing 😉 and hopefully meet you both in person and take you guys lunch or dinner or just a beer.
We really do love your content and I know we are just another couple normal folks that loves to fish for anything but, you have what we believe is the Best, Most Educational and Inspiring content on RUclips and hell, your SUPER fun to watch! Oh also, please keep showing the homestead, bird content, food and we love the girls (chickens)!!
You guys have a incredible spring and we will be patiently waiting for your next content.
I really find all the science behind the how’s and why’s of fishing to be fascinating and you present all the information so well. Very well done and welcome back from your trip!
Thank you. I really appreciate this.
Couldn't agree more regarding the science comment. I worked in a chemical plant in a Technology Development lab for years. Everything happens for a reason. The fun is finding that reason(s)
Thank you for all the research you did to prepare for this video. You do a wonderful job of encouraging us all to think more critically about many aspects of fishing. Thanks again for all your efforts.
Thanks for your excellent content!
Thank you for your support.
Happy for the lives
Thank you I enjoy them too!
Great information! Love the science!
I am pretty new to Kokanee fishing and your videos add a whole new perspective to targeting salmon. I have applied a lot of my 40+ yrs of King Salmon techniques to Kokanee fishing and your inputs are all right on. Thanks for sharing! Tight lines!
Thanks for sharing all your research on this topic.
Thank you for your support. I really appreciate it.
Love your channel Tyler! I've been watching you for several years and always appreciate your shared knowledge about the fisheries I grew up in. I'm always learning something new from you!
Thanks!
Thank you for your support.
Interezting topic, the kind of information thats unique to your channel.
I enkoyed your article in On The Water media, I am now motivated to tdy my hand at kokane fishing in CT. In most of New England there is landlocked salmon fishing but here in MA those fishing opportunities are quite limited.
These lives are the definition of "Fish smarter, not harder" love to see and learn from them
Thank you for the very useful information. I enjoy every video you put out.
One of the things that stood out to me was when you showed the lure at minute 24:40. Yes the color of the lure stood out but what surprised me was how the fishing line stood out! That is a very bright blue line!
Right? Fishing line appears to fluorescent, who knew.
East Twin Lakes all the way over in Salisbury Connecticut has Kokanee salmon and I never caught one but with information you provided might make the difference. It has been almost 40 yrs since I fished there. After watching the tail end of your informative video might go try to catch some this year. Water has plenty of lime springs and you can see way down. I moved to Mattawamkeag Maine so I’m not near that location. As far as I know the State of Maine does not have Kokanee salmon but New York does.
Be sure and check out this video too. ruclips.net/video/lpjsQ2NyMP4/видео.html
What a fantastic video! Thank you so much. I just hit all my lures with black light and found some of my favorites were high fluorescence. Interesting.
Your favorites are the Kokanee's favorites for a reason. 👍 It's always better understanding the why. Thanks for the positive feedback.
Gold man, just gold information here. Thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you for these videos. It’s hard to find in depth informational videos regarding Kokanee, people like me can never get knowledge about subjects were care about, so please keep the content coming!
The weather has been terrible, so ready to fish as the spring comes
This is awesome video! No wonder I only catch kokanee in my lake deep on blue lures! I'm going to get some flourescent blue spray paint! LOL
Great discussion…. Yes, I want to understand why manufacturers do not market fluorescent blue/purple hooches, I’ve wondered this myself.
Another example of what separates you from other content on the web, thank you
Very knowledgeable and wonderful video.
Thanks for the awesome information
Great information. Thanks.
Lots of aHa moments. Learned a lot thanks
Great video. Thank you for this. When do you partner with a lure manufacturer to start selling fluorescent blue/purple lures? I’ll help test them!
Ha! 1 minute after I typed this you challenged tackle companies to make them.
Do we know if kokanee have lucidum tapetum eye structures similar to other teleost fishes to aid in visual acuity during low light, crepuscular periods? Dig your channel and this is my favorite episode to date - great presentation!
Its my understanding that this structure is lacking in Salmonids.
Thanks so much for the great content! Very interesting! I got a few UV hoochies from PPT and I'm anxious to try them out! If I recall correctly, you prefer to rig your hoochies with the trailing hook clear of the skirt. Would you recommend that I add beads to pre-rigged hoochies that have the trailing hook half buried in the skirt?
You can add beads or simply retie the hooks with a bit more clearance which I prefer to do.
Do you ever go so far as to swap out the hooks for your preferred split shot drop shot hooks? Or maybe change up the size….replace the 4’s with 2’s if targeting larger fish?
Yes I almost always trade out for split shot drop shot. I do go to size 2's for larger fish.
@@spiltmilt Thanks!
What are your thoughts on white hoochies? Last year my most productive lure was an all white crappie tube behind a Mack’s lure double D dodger. Thanks!
White reflects all available light. A good choice for low light situations
@@spiltmilt Makes sense. Thank you!
I'm curious when to use a gold, brass, or chrome dodger? I've heard many times that gold and brass work well in low light or under certain conditions. Thanks for the awesome video!
I hear many opinions on this matter and even I don't have a strong reasons for my preferences but I generally like gold and copper during bright conditions and silver/nickel during cloudy periods or early light.
@@spiltmilt Thanks for the info!
Neat stuff! 😀
I'm wondering.... I have very small diameter blue braided line that I put on a few of my rods and if I try trolling with them, would the blue color be more of a deterrent than, say, mono, flouro, or a different color braid?
I doubt it will impact your catch rates all that much as Kokanee aren't particularly line shy and you'll head a leader anyways.
@@spiltmilt Thanks, I'm not planning on using the braid for kokanee, but the points you made about their ability to see reds, blues, and purples better than other colors made me question my choice of braid color in general :D
Pink is a very common kokanee color but does not exist on the whitelight spectrum as a single color. I believe this explains why pink works at depth. Pink is a mixture of green, blue, and red. Kokanee most likely see pink as bkue-green at depth greater than 30 feet.
Is it going to be helpful to recharge with my uv flashlight?
Glow lures recharged with a UV light will be brighter
So how does corn come in to play?
Scent and bait are a completely different topic and a very different sensory array.
"With or against the sun"... does this mean running pointed into the sun, or running away from the sun? Presumably we are only talking sunrise and sunset?
With the sun = sun to your back
I'm all in on a moon jelly wrap for your car. Just post the gofundme :D
A moon jelly wrapped car 😂😂😂
