- Video demonstration on how the internals of a cd changer work. I do not explain the moving parts, but I have provided a couple different views so you are the see the movements of the internal components. If you find your cd changer has jammed, sometimes you can assist one of the moving parts to help them remove. This then enables you to remove the cd cartridge. Not all cd changers are the same, there are different models and manufactures available on the market. This particular unit is a 6 disk cd changer from a 1997 BMW 540i.

Issues as to why a cd changer may not work:
-blown fuse
-corroded electrical connector
-broken wires
-poor ground
-damaged cd cartridge
-sticking cd cartridge
-dirty laser
-sticking internals/dried out lubrication/dirty lubrication
-broken internal components

Hey dude, I got it again... the jamming. It's not the arm that gets jammed, but there is a linear potmeter on the lower left (under the magazine) that let's the electronics know at which level the player is at. This gets dirty and tends to send a wrong resistance value to the electronics, causing the player to stop too early or too later. Thus it isn't level with the right tray, then it does pull the tray out but gets hung up on those metal fingers on the right front and rear side of the changer.
Remedy I found in the end is to drizzle some contact cleaner (with the straw attached) in that potmeter, when just holding your tongue at the right angle as there is no good way to get to it. Then just let it run through a few cycles of it pulling the discs in and out, so just put it in the car and insert/eject the magazine a few times for it to go through its disc detection sequence.

Great video! My Mom’s 2000 Acura RL has the exact same cd changer in the trunk. This helped me resolve the jammed cassette. Now I gotta lube and put it to the test.
Update: All lubed up, E01 Error code cleared. All discs now cycling properly. Eject release works perfect again.

The big gear on mine is stuck at the moment. What's the best way to lubricate it to prevent it from sticking?

I have an old Panasonic SA PM28 which at the time of writing this is jammed but every so often it decides to work again. Assuming the system is similar to this, would that be a symptom of this issue?
Sounds like it needs to be cleaned and re-lubricated.

how do I remove the cartridge with no power available? Is there a manual eject where I can push a paper clip through??
