    I just wanted to let you know my 85 year old dad absolutely loves your videos. He doesn't know how to use a smartphone (scared to touch the screen in fear of messing everything up), but anytime you come out with a new video, he wants to watch. And get this....he watches no other videos or RUclipsr. Keep up the good work!

    Pig Iron: is hot iron (usually simple iron but sometimes an alloy) that is poured from the smelter into little canals and lakes cut in the dirt (originally). The iron that cooled in the small ponds were removed as "pigs" and could later be used by further processes and poured or wrought into useful items. Pigs can be used in a Steel plant to make various grades of steel.

    • @STho205
      @STho205 5 лет назад +2

      I believe the little pond at 6:40 was such a pig for large bulk iron. I'd have to see more of it to know it was that and not something else, but large pig vessels looked like that. Smaller ones look like shallow graves. Little ones might be half that size in the old days of hand cranes and wagons. About the size of a full grown pig or smaller all the way to ingot sized.

    I just recently found your content and got really excited to see this video because it's so close to my hometown. It actually gave me a ton of nostalgia to see the Sloss tower again. I did the tour there as a kid on a school field trip during September and they had all the decorations up for the Fright Furnace event.

    The iron smelted at Sloss came from iron ore mined out of Red Mountain, which is a mountain ridge just southwest of the furnace. Some of the old mining trails and equipment can be found on the nature trail that runs the ridge of mountain behind Vulcan Park.

    My grandfather worked there. Was instrumental back in the 80s in restoring it to a museum. I think they closed down because pig iron was outdated. With the invention of coke, they were able to manufacture steel better. The plant moved to Fairfield...about 10 miles to the West

    That is a cool site. Locally we have an active iron forge called Drop Forge. On a good day when I was 8-22, I could hear the heavy clang clang clang of the super hammer pounding the iron down. It is a really cool looking building and grounds from an early age prior to me! (I'm 50)

I would not want the pollution, but respect those who created such works...haunted?...nothing wrong with that either.....

    About Pig iron. As I understood it when I was there . they call it Pig iron because when they pour it from the cauldron into the sand they lay out impressions side by side with the iron feeder path in the middle of 2 rows of impressions. When it is cast it looks like each molded iron piece lined up in rows looks like piglets suckling on their mother. Wala Pig Iron.
