  • Herbert Samuel Phineas was born in Fiji of New Zealand parents, but was brought up by his Samoan foster father on the island of Manono. He was a hereditary chief of the island, a title which other Samoan chiefs gave him.
In 1961 the ABC met Mr Phineas in Apia and travelled to Manono for a feature about his extraordinary story.
