I had to re-watch this after I started planing my Bowsette cosplay. He/She has a green spiked shell on her back kind of like a back pack/TMNT shell. The first thing that I thought of when I said "Where can I get one?" was this tutorial.
My friend did this diy but instead of leaving the harsh cut lines on the belly of the shell, she cut strips of thin craft foam and then filled in the lines in between with black craft paint to make the lines and it gives a much smoother finish if anyone was looking for tips.
you think you could make Tik-Tok from Return to Oz? idk if you know the movie, but it was a huge part of my childhood, had great puppeteering, it was made in the 80s, so you may have seen it if you were into special effects at that time (its a very unappreciated movie, great effects, and I love the Oz books)
Steve Angelopoulos yes, one could use most any foam. I used this poly foam because it is softer. the new white foam is stiffer than the yellow foam, but the first blue shell was made to be thrown at people in costume. if you want to keep it all soft and plushy the latex based foam is fine. The stiffer grey foam that a lot of equipment is packed in would work too. If it was only ever going to be used for display you could use styrofoam or the expanding polyethylene foams. Then it would never sink!
