Catching Max was one thing, passing him is another.
Because he’ll push you off the track then park on your neck while crying about not getting crowned god of f1

Lando drove superbly today, absolutely on it 120%. Unfortunately for him, Max decided that this weekend was the perfect time to remind everyone why he’s a 3x champion who has equaled or broken nearly every record in F1
Not really he was good but again slower in quali then Piastri and to many small mistakes probably even overdriving to catch max faster
@@ehrlichgesagt863considering the place the car was on friday, we have to admit red bull made a great turn around.
Horner said it on his ig how their simulator team had stayed up all night trying everything to get the car into the best window!
This race really showcased the "Max factor"
Lando was on 99% max on 120%

@@__The-Official-Real-Obama__ I'm not a Hamilton fan and no one mentioned him so it's weird you brought him up.
@@__The-Official-Real-Obama__Crazy how you psychos are still pissed that Max drove into the side of Hamilton. 😂
Congrats Max! Not bad for a part-time f1 driver!
Right!
People forget Max is one of the hardest drivers to pass, I'm not even convinced 2 more laps would've been a guarantee...Oscar was way faster than Sainz and he still couldn't get by because of the short straights and single DRS zone that kept saving Carlos
But the pace between Ferrari and McLaren with piastri and sainz was very similar, but with Norris and verstapen Norris had a way better pace at the end. Would have made it much easier.
@doriandueck5223 no? Piastri was if anything way faster then Sainz compared to Lando to Max. He was easily staying inside 0.6 tenth the hole lap long but could keep the pace out of the last corner something Sainz does a lot optimising setup for the corner before the long straight same in Miami.
Same with Norris and Checo in Miami. Norris was clearly faster but he spent a lot of laps just trying to get through. And Max is that much faster of a driver. It's not a given that Norris would get through even with a few more laps
Im also not convinced that if there was a safety car with 15 laps to go that Lando wins. Max pits for mediums, which he was must faster than Lando on and Lando doesn’t have the pace to beat Max. It would take a safety car and Max not pitting.
The main outcome of this is not that Lando didn't overtake Max, but that he believes he _can_ do it. I've been watching F1 about 50 years, and I've seen this in many drivers. Get that first win and it's like the door is opened. Some seem happy that they win the one in their careers, but when they have Lando's attitude, it's often the first of many. 😅

It's already like this. McLaren and Ferrari are up there if not better than Red Bull, if Verstappen has such a hard time beating them and Perez is this far behind.
To quote Max, “if my mom had balls, she’d be my dad.” I hate that last week everyone, including Max, was defending Lando’s win even though he got very lucky with the sc, and saying that we shouldn’t engage in hypotheticals. Now, everyone is falling over themselves to talk about what might have happened if there were a few more laps (even though catching someone and overtaking them are two very different things.)
Exactly, the double standards are insane
*cough* British bias? *cough*
You could just say Lando Norris has been amazing.
Yep, all the British and so called "Lando's fangirls" are the worst fans. Glad Max won the race.
I think you are abusing the “everyone” hyperbole, yes, there are a few saying he needed more laps, but not that many to say everyone.
Amazing from both Max and Lando. McLaren might be the saviours we need to prevent this season from becoming a snoozefest. Max held his own so a well deserved win, but can't take away anything from Lando's masterful driving too. Also anyone notice, it's a trend now, the McLaren seems to come alive at the later stages of the race. Low fuel performance might be better than the RedBull.

The commentators genuinely said "100% probability of a safety car" on 2 occasions.
If they meant to say anything else, they definitely didn't say it correctly 😅
I think it was closer to 4 times! The U.S. commentators are different than Europe/Sky F1, so Matt and Tommy don't get to hear that.
The commentator needs to do primary school maths to understand what’s probability.
Unpopular opinion: Imola's a worse track for overtaking than Hungary.
Hungary is underrated. I know my opinion doesn't matter because I am from there 😁
Imola as a track is really beautiful but for race action it s just pure BS. I was kind of happy that they removed it from the calendar years ago
Imola has great fans and setting and I'm sure it's lovely to drive around but yeah, the races are always mediocre.
@@glidertastic5778 As a Brit I agree! In fact it is a terrific track for first wins, often from ridiculous grid places (e.g. Button). Every track has boring races, regardless of its shape. You also provide one of the most beautiful, if fragile prizes (much to Lando's embarrassment last year lol). I hope you're going to get to the race this year!
the wec race was at Imola a week or two ago and it was very hard for the hyper cars to overtake aswell.....

Finally a race to P1! We needed this!
I'm a data nerd as well, usually have at least the data channel and one onboard pulled up beside the main broadcast
I think Max just grew tired from all the endurance racing he was doing prior to the actual race. Also that total race time by max, has gotta be divine intervention of some sort right?
Don’t forget, Perez didn’t catch Hamilton once he cleared tsunoda on 5lap old mediums.
Cooldown room was another great Max Podcast. Leclerc thinking it was Lando in the gravel...Lando thinking it might be Max...Max going" You hoped it was me" Hahaha

Okay, to summarize this weekend:
Qualifying: P1 Verstappen
Race: P1 Verstappen
24hr Nürnburgring (sim): P1 Verstappen
Tasty Tweet of the week is an Avatar: the Last Airbender reference. (The animated series)
Tuned in to the race in the last 12 laps and boy those 10 laps kept me at the edge of my seat
fun fact: they shortened the DRS zone this year so probably hampered overtakes a lot.
That reported getting dragged off the grid pre race was the highlight of the weekend.
Matt, if a safety car had been deployed near the end, Max would have switched back to mediums and would have outpaced Lando again.
They did not just leave Checo out for a safety car. He had the reverse strategy of Max. 27 laps medium - hard. Checo stopped with 27 laps to go.
That being said, he was indeed too slow and the gravel excursion did not help. Like LeClerc's charge on Norris was instantly over when he covered his tires in grass...
Also, I don't think Norris would have passed Max in a lap more. We've seen Piastri stuck behind Sainz, Yuki behind Sargeant etc. It is one thing to close the gap, but to make the pass...
I swear to god if you ever say McLaren for biggest flop……..
It's alright, it won't work anymore. Whenever Matt gets conscious of his powers they kinda start backfiring and then the Ferraris end up in the walls :,-)
i was so utterly bored senseless by that race, it was hard to get hyped for lando catching bc my realist brain goes , "he'll just barely run out of time" such a shame it wasn't 1 or 2 more laps
10:10 who could remember the dutch football player Johan Kruijf with playernumber 14 who passed away in early 2016 and lived in Barcelona. Max his first race for RB in 2016 in Barcelona he qualified 4th, finished 1st in a time of 1.41.40.017 😮😮😮
Small edit, the race started at 14:00😅
The VSC, SC, red flags and yellows were used up during F2, F3 and the porsche supercup
I honestly don’t think the race was that bad, I expected way less. But that’s maybe because in the german skysportf1 podcast, backstage boxengasse, they talked about how little overtakes there were in the last years in imola, so i was excited about every overtake 😂😂
Matt should do a video with the F1 production team. Would love to get a look behind the tech and it'd be hilarious watching Matt punch up cameras and graphics trying to keep up with the action. Sending cameraman Alonso vibes
I’ve started just watching driver cams and having the broadcast up for the timing chart
Funny hearing people repeat “one more lap!” Like they have never seen how hard max is to get around
The drivers championship is foregone conclusion but the constructors title seems to be back on track
I watched till 31 laps, fell asleep woke up with 5 laps left, went back to sleep.
I’m sad this race was the way it was, I was worried and sadly it was the last race me and my dad watched together, he said to mom when she asked, who won? Who is that one in the blue suit?”
“Verstapen”
She then tried to repeat the name but didn’t get it right, father then repeated
“Verstapen, he won the race”
I hope dad can see the other races from where he is now. And that he help us to see great racing like he loved
Perez: How did i qualify 11th? the lap felt good?!
Team: You are Matts biggest flop this weekend checo
Perez: Ah understandable, i'll retire the car
I loved from f1tv pro the Italian commentator/ interviewer this week he had so much energy and made me smile 🙂
diggin the new intro tunes
Kinda surprised there's nothing about Albono's wonderful 4-stop race
The hetz on K Mag is getting a little (a lot) out of hand, he was done pretty dirty by the stewards at Miami, with two out of the three incidents being racing incidents at most. The fact he got a penalty for his battle with Sargeant is the clearest proof of that. Heck even the battle with Lewis was a racing incident according to Lewis himself.
5:20 Merc still quite behind
I’m surprised there weren’t any memes about Albon/Williams’ pit stops struggles 😅
Everyone is so excited for Imola until they remember it actually sucks for overtaking.
What I wonder: did anyone see the race sim Max was doing during the race?
the 15:00 tasty tweet template is from " The Avatar" cartoon series. its starting includes the " but when the world needed him most, he vanished" element
Tells you you can beat Max even if you have a better car. You would need a MUCH better car to beat Max.
What will happen in the next episode of Drive to Survive? Charles Leclerc first is going to be reminded all week that he never had a good home Grand Prix, then he is going to put on pole and win the GP and everybody is going to go crazy, OMG he did it...
Kinda like how they announced Lando would win in Miami.
People, including Lando, are getting a bit cocky though. Having catched him and being within a second is one thing but passing ain’t that easy on this track, let alone Max. Happy we see some proper racing though!
"If there was one or two more laps Lando would've won" if my mom had balls she would be my dad
I'm gonna be honest... I did fall asleep while watching the race so I didn't even notice that Norris was getting closer to Verstappen at the last 10 laps
@ 4:00 Dont be a drive to survive drama queen Matt. Max and Lando both are professionals. They are like boxers that will fuck eachother up in the ring and out of the ring are friends.
I ran down to do a quick laundry. Check and ended up spending 15 minutes. And when I came back up the race hadn't changed. There was no reason to back it up.😮😊
At the beginning of the race when we were watching Oscar and Carlos fighting for p4, the TV direction actually decided to use the timing tower PiP to show us all the… battle between Oscar and Carlos for p4 🤦🏻♂️
Getting closer and catching-two very different things.
Some say 0,7s, I say perfect strategy. He drove what he needed and not a second more.
McLaren is the best car now. RB and Ferrari are close behind. Max is a beast.
When the going gets tough, the gap (between Max & Checo) gets growing.
You 2 need a segment each week where you review predictions and award points.
No point thisbweekend Matt. There is no universe where Sergio Perez was a bigger flop than Fernando Alonso
What a banger at the end of the race
ABSOLUTELY agree with Matt on the data. Show me everything! But indeed gaps and sectors in quali are a must
I actually fell asleep around lap 20. woke up with 2 laps to go
Alonso had a bad weekend, which happens once in a year. Checo had a bad weekend, which happens once in two weeks 😂
The ironic thing abt the weather is that there is severe thunderstorm warnings in imola tomorrow.
I thought Ferrari might bring in Sainz early for the undercut and then nope... they let everyone else pit first and then just slotted back into 5th.
After these last two weekends I still see Max getting WDC but the constructors is now up in the air. I'm excited for F1 again.
This video is a lot more entertaining than the race.
I was literally falling asleep until norris started catching up to max and damn that woke me up!
Lando 0.7 seconds behind Max at the checkered flag can also mean that Max took out some speed in the final lap -DRS wouldn't have mattered anymore, so why not driving a bit less aggressive...
Yep, agreed... that's basically why they ended up less than 1 second apart at the chequered flag.
Did you watch? He was using his battery just to keep ahead, he had to switch to a different mode (slower mode) to charge his battery, and his tires were gone. This is a good thing btw, there are weaknesses in the RB but only when it has to be pushed as it was today. This might be a cool season even if we only see Max actually fight for wins and win anyway.
Wtf? Why would he let Norris get that close to begin with? Seems needlessly risky.
@@lukew6725 Max driving cautiously to avoid mistakes and letting Lando catch up is risky, but pushing hard and risking a final lap mistake is a bigger risk. Lando was not getting past on the last lap, so Max chose to play it safe.
@@lukew6725 He had a black and white flag and it was better to risk physical defense than a time penalty that would guarantee him not getting 1st.
So, a confession, especially as a McLaren fan:
I was more worried that Norris would make a mistake and bin it than I was expectant that he'd pass Verstappen. So honestly, the finish wasn't that tense for me.
1) I felt that Max just about had it in hand even through his struggles, especially when Norris made those tiny mistakes and therefore didn't gain as much time as he had been. I thought he'd run out of laps, which is what happened.
2) Imola's tough to pass at at the best of times, and the shortened DRS zone didn't help, yes there were some moves but others (e.g. Ricciardo and Sergeant, Piastri and Sainz) got stuck. You had to be about half a second behind the driver in front to even have a chance of making a move towards Tamburello. We saw that in F2 and it carried over to F1.
Still, really happy with P2, and it looks like McLaren are becoming more of a threat at this point, though whether they can be a consistent thorn in Red Bull's side is another matter. I do think Lando can get more wins though if the opportunity comes, and hopefully Oscar can break his duck as well.
No talk about what if, wise words by max verstappen
The finish reminded me of the wec race in imola
😂 Checo was messing with balance ran off and took some floor damage.
