How time flies! I'm from Houston and not only did I grow up watching the Astros, but thanks to cable, I watched the Braves on WTBS and the Cubs on WGN. I remember the days of Dale Murphy and Andre Dawson, hitters that the Astros pitchers didn't like facing, for good reasons. Whenever the Braves or the Cubs made the playoffs, if they weren't playing Houston of course, I cheered for them. I still remember the hype of Wrigley field having its first night game for the first time since it opened in 1914. This was almost 33 years ago! Harry has been gone for over 20 years, may he RIP, and Bill Murray, with lots of gray hair, is 70 but still with us. What amazes me the most though is that like Fenway park, it won't go away! It's not only a historical Chicago landmark but an American iconic stadium and I know we'd all hate for it to be replaced and demolished.
Couldn't they have checked the forecast and moved the game time up 30 minutes? If so... they would have made it through the top of the 5th inning, Sutcliffe and the Cubs win, and Sandberg does not get his HR taken away. Sutcliffe pitched 12 complete games in 1988, but lost 6 of those games. The Cubs scored a total of only 7 runs in those 6 losses. Will never forget Sutcliffe's '84 season when he went 16-1 and won the Cy Young, and the Cubs won the division title for the first time in team history. Sutcliffe also won 16 games for the '89 Cubs team who won the division.
sadly it would be 28 years before the Cubs won a world series, 2016, the next time the 1988 calendar would repeat, all 366 days, leap day Feb 29 falling on a Monday.
Hey STL VHS VAULT, there was a TV commercial about THE FIRST NIGHT GAME which featured my friends in the bleachers swinging towels and hi-fiving each other. The commentator to that commercial said "these are the greatest fans" while the camera panned to us. My friends and I recorded this commericial and we cannot locate it. Your video above cuts out the commercials. Do you still have the uncut version? Also, the first night game commercial was played frequently the week of. Hoping the best. Thank you.
There is no "rest" of the game. Because it was rained out after 3 1/2 innings, no record exists of the contest in baseball-reference.com. Mike Bielecki was in the bullpen, ready to go because Sutcliffe had a bad back, Bielecki went the next night in the first official Wrigley Field night game and the Cubs beat the Mets, 6-4. Frank DiPino got the win in relief, Goose Gossage the save.
I taped this on VHS and my teenage stepdaughter went behind me a couple months later and taped a New Kids On The Block concert over it. I believe I could of got off on justifiable Homicide😂
I remember this game! I was only 9yrs old. I watched the Cubs everyday during summer break!
It would've been great if Bill Murray broadcasted Cubs games. Murray's hilarious to the max.
1:23 Loved this broadcast open. WGN ran a different one for the day games.
After Bradley's homer somebody yelled, "Turn the dang light's off!" Harry responded, "We haven't batted yet!" LOL
That was Bill Murray who yelled, "Turn the dang lights off!" Lol
The game wasn’t official when it was called for rain so the next night vs the Mets was actually the official first Wrigley Night game.

Such a historical baseball game at Wrigley Field
This game was played on 8/8/88. Ironically, Anthony Rizzo was born on 8/8/89. ⚾️ 🧢

The game that never was! According to the record books, this never happened!
Just like the original Game 1 of the 1982 NLCS 🙄

harry caray not knowing what camera flash is lol
That's because Harry had a stroke in 1987. When you get old, you're not going to think him not knowing what the camera flashes were is funny.
Gotta love how Steve stone gently tried to remind him without making him look too foolish
i was 8 years old back living in chicago
Who cares
Why is there Cubs highlights on a STL area based channel?! Aren't you a cardinals fan?
Jesus, that was a decent Cubs lineup with a young Palmero
I know im only 22 atm but yes this Cubs team was amazing to bad tey couldnt get a WS with this team #CubforLife
Do I keep hearing Bill Murray yelling at people or is that someone else? Anyone else hear that. 🐻⚾🥎
11:08. Mr obnernoff. Lol. Love Harry

Check my channel for WGN commercials. Pretty sure I would have uploaded the commercials from this broadcast.
