A great last studio album- the first and last songs are incredibly prescient, awe inspiring, and poignant. To this day, I can’t listen to those two songs with dry eyes. The whole album is fantastic, but those two, man. (And yes, I know the “Are You Being Served?” theme provides the lyrics for “Going Up”, but it kind of goes beyond that, doesn’t it?) Thanks for posting this- my CD in the car is a bit scratched up and skippy from almost two decades of being carted around in various cars, apartments, etc. I can’t believe that 2004 (when John went up) was that long ago, now.
I share my birthdate with Jhonn's going up. I was 25. They were also filming Clive Barker's Hellraiser with the Cenobites in Uncle Frank's attic the 7th anniversary of my birth. Fairly significant to me both considering everything.
@@ianswanson5022 That’s really cool. It’s a wonderful feeling when things that mean so much to us coincide with other important things in our lives. Right on. 🖤
coil's mysic sounds like breaking up with the one person you've known for decades or even watching them die, knowing nothing will ever be the same again
I love Coil not only musically ( they are not virtuous).I agree with the lyrics, also because they paid homage and denounced the Killing of One of my compatriots ( proving the Italy and Italians are not Just pizza and spaghetti)Pasolini great Poet against the corrente system
I heard this album once about 7 years ago and promptly forgot what it was called. I’ve been looking for it off and on since then, and just now found it on a mu chart.
@@bigmonk802 yeah same, took me years to actually listen to anything else from them because I always just loved listening to this record. Amazing band and amazing records.
This is certainly enigmatic, but a work of art it is. If you want to even try to understand Coil, check out Love's Secret Domain and go from there... They invented facets of EDM. "I swallowed the one yew berry". Ignoring the pun, the seed of the yew berry is deadly poisonous. I wouldn't eat one. What does he mean? I sometimes wonder if they cared about rave culture, I doubt it because they were too busy making music.
I think at least Peter Christopherson had an interest in it. I remember reading the interview where he was talking about all the research chemicals they messed with and I seem to remember him alluding to the rave culture and drug use, but I could be misremembering that last part
i interpret the yew berry line as being similar to the "then i took a sip from a cup of mercury" line from the live version of this song (found as track 4 on "...and the ambulance died in his arms"), in that these are both lethal acts that it seems like the narrator of both songs doesn't want to do, but finds themselves doing. various causes of death are mentioned throughout the ape of naples: poison, alcohol ("it's in my blood") and cutting ("heaven's blade", "tattooed man", potentially "amber rain") come to mind. in addition, many aspects of the lyricism of the album are about the many facets of death (particularly on "fire of the mind"). so, in short, i believe that this line plays into the ape of naples' running theme: that of death as a complex, multi-faceted thing.
@@rosadeciduaFantastic comment. I love that Mercury line- when I first heard it, I had just gotten the symbol for Mercury on the back of my neck, as it’s always been very personal and important to me. I heard that version for the first time just a couple of days later, and I had a kind of moment of clarity- it felt very inclusive, like a connection to something larger. Groovy. Anyway, just wanted to say that I enjoyed your comment- it was a well thought out analysis.
Really cool album. Impressed me enough I bought it on vinyl. But I can’t help thinking it could have benefited by having better vocals in a few places . Although maybe that’s just me. l
I disagree. Mr. Balance’s voice is very distinctive and evocative. There’s no other voice like it. He may not be a technically proficient singer, but the passionate gravity in his performances and his one-of-a-kind voice more than make up for it.
disturbing? as i said a few times commenting some of my most loved music, the only thing im finding truly disturbing is the mindless plastic pop the masses are being force fed every day, having to listen any of it for even a few seconds is pure torture not only on pure sound level,. and they force it literally everywhere, i went to a pharmacy a few weeks ag to buy a thingie, it was even there, its sickening. in the meantime listening to bands like coil always feels like a haven, its just so real.
