SMH ... and if that's not the case, then shouldn't the "reawoken" guy from the coffee shop have woken up next to a lifeless Bill? Cause when Death left his body, he left with Bill's soul, not his whole freakin self.

You know, sometimes in a film its the little things you notice that can mean everything. @1:40 when Bill looks at Joe, the realization hits him. Death has an understanding of what a treasure life is, he's completely engrossed in the beauty of the fireworks and the simple existence of just living. Bill gives the tiniest of smiles with his understanding, and then simply states "Its hard to let go isn't it."
Joe, still consumed with the beauty he sees before him he almost can't speak and simply says quietly "Yes it is Bill."
"Well that's life. What can I tell you."
Nothing else needs to be said :) You have a moment where Death doesn't want to let go of living.
    Its a great film!

I personally think the reaper should have a good understanding of life to begin with. So that everyone can have a respectful passing or transition from an entity that understands what they're leaving behind. I think this was the case with the Korean drama "Goblin" or "Guardian". I like the grim reaper concept but the rest of the drama has a harsh contrast between comedy and drama. But that's typical Korean drama.

It’s also noteworthy that when Bill and death turn to look at one another with the fireworks in the backdrop, it’s death who takes a second glance before they depart. It’s as if their roles have shifted and it’s now Bill ushering death into the stage that follows life. Death is the one having more difficulty letting go.

There are masterpieces written about love from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to Boris Pasternak’s Zhivago. In concept most show human pain and exquisite suffering as circumstances unfold and human strength and frailties are exposed.
In comparison, if this were just and possible, this seemingly mundane titled Joe Black, originally written as an Italian play La Morte in Vacanza by Alberto Casella, explains its almost operatic vision of love.
The depth revealed here transcends human emotion and gives us a glimpse of love’s quintessential power that we all possess and cannot fathom, in making us imagine what could happen if Death fell in love. That in the end even with all ‘authority’ at his disposal Death is overwhelmed by the power of human love and lets her go. And in a final act of love he gifts her the person she wanted in the first place.
Forlani, Pitt and Hopkins are marvelous here.

The ending is stirring…loved the film!
One quirky thing about the screenplay…. Bill & Joe walk over the grassy berm to disappear together. Then reincarnated “Joe-the-diner heartthrob” returns without Bill to greet Susan where she understands her father just died, yet all her focus is on Joe. Dreamy-eyed, they walk off hand-in-hand to start their life together…leaving dead Bill’s warm corpse sprawled-out laying somewhere behind the grassy berm, likely dead from a heart attack. Now that doesn’t make sense.
Actually, were I Bill, and with his $$, I would have sought the best cardiologists in the land to where Bill might have only been away from work recovering from bypass heart surgery…but he’d be alive. That of course would have destroyed the script.
