today’s video, we will be learning about anemia, basic lab tests, classification, pathophysiology, SYMPTOMS OF ANEMIA especially in WOMEN. We will also understand basic lab tests done to assess a patient of anemia. We will be explaining in a very simple way with the help of flow charts and animations about ANEMIA- BASIC LAB TESTS. So, stick to the end of this video for a better understanding of the disease.
Everybody has heard this term anemia but i would like to mention that this is not a disease rather a sign of many different diseases which can manifest as anemia. We will discuss what is anemia? What are the common types? Common signs and symptoms? Its diagnosis and management? So, what is anemia? Anemia is defined as decrease in oxygen carrying capacity od red blood cells in the body. But what are the parameters to define decreased oxygen carrying capacity? We all know that red cells in our blood have a protein hemoglobin which is responsible for carrying and transporting oxygen to different tissues of our body. So commonly level of hemoglobin in the body is used as a parameter to define anemia. In males a hemoglobin level of less than 13gm/dl, in females a hemoglobin level of less than 12mg/dl an in pregnant females a hemoglobin level of less than 11 mg/dl is labelled as anemia. Anemia can occur due to various reasons but most important or common ones are decreased red cell mass due to loss or destruction or decreased hemoglobin in red cells due to nutritional deficiency or abnormal hemoglobin.
Decrease in RBCs or Hb leads to following symptoms and warrants prompt action to treat the underlying cause as anemia in long run can cause different organs to malfunction or cardiac failure.ANEMIA- BASIC LAB TESTS
Nutritional deficiency anemia is the most common cause of anemia followed by hemoglobinopathies such as anemia. Other causes could be anemia of chronic disease or blood cancers or bone marrow suppression or failure. Nutritional deficiency occurs due to iron deficiency or vitamin B12 and can affect almost 50% children and more than 80% of females in our country. Iron and vitamin B12 bring unique changes in size and shape of red blood cells which forms the basis of classification of anemia.
Classification micro, normo and macro
Other classification on cause such as nutritional hemoglobinopathy and bone marrow suppression.
Diagnosis of anemia involves basic lab tests for diagnosis of anemia like peripheral blood examination
Other causes of anemia require different treatment modalities which we will discuss in future videos.
Treatment of anemia depends upon the cause of anemia. But as nutritional anemia is most common a trial of hematinics and B12 is given to treat anemia and if response is poor further tests are done.
This video will give u brief overview of all the basic lab tests used in anemia, morphology of rbc's , macrocytic , microcytic and normocytic, causes of anemia, it's classification ,and approach.
