The scientists knew the design of their RBMK reactor very well, they were aware of the risks, it all came down to a balancing act between cost and safety. What caused the accident at the end was the negligent safety culture and the inherent unsafe design combined. - The exact composition of the control rods and the increased reactivity caused by inserting them into the core was kept from the engineers operating the plant. The Chief designer of the RBMK reactor knew that this could be an issue, because the reactivity was noticed in another RBMK reactor plant before, but nothing was done to remedy it. There was a widespread view that the conditions under which the positive scram effect would be important would never occur. - The authors who wrote the test procedure had no knowledge of the positive SCRAM issue, furthermore it was allowed to disable key safety equipment if it was according to procedure. - The safety test was supposed to only affect the electrical side and therefore did not need approval from the the chief design authority but it required disabling certain safety equipment from the reactor itself, which normally would require approval. - Due to the conditions of the reactor at the time, it was not possible to do the safety test according to procedure, so they took the more inexperienced night shift and forced them to do it anyway, manually by disabling almost all safety features. The computer system designed to monitor the plant could not be used because it was never designed to operate in these conditions.

"This is what happens when we play with technology we don't understand." This deserves a place in The Great Hall of the Stupidest Things Ever Said By A Human Being. The technology and the physics principals behind nuclear power generation are understood perfectly. They were understood then and they are still understood today. What he should have said is, "This is what happens when you put bureaucrats and uneducated people in charge of things THEY don't understand". The Chernobyl disaster happened because inexperienced workers were entrusted with performing a dangerous experiment on a live nuclear reactor by a bunch of brainless government suits. Fukushima happened because, even though they'd been warned that the plant was vulnerable to tsunami, the corporation in charge didn't think it was worth spending the money to fix it. The problem with nuclear power isn't the science or the technology. The problem is human/government/corporate ignorance and greed.
I don't mean to argue, but you basically just repeated what he said, you just worded it better. The people who caused it didn't understand the technology, therefor they were playing with technology that they don't understand.
Its was an experiment, that went very bad, after the explosion the magma, over 5000 celsius heat, melted thro ground,if would have touched water,it would have caused second explosion, far greater then first,if that would have taken place,Europe would be unhabittable.luckily they removed water from there, before it got it
6:29 we do understand the technology, we understand why it melted down, we understand what led to the meltdown, its YOU journalist of VICE that doesnt understand the technology. This short film/documentary is a mockery of journalism.
We understood it back then, too. Shoddy Soviet engineering doesn't equate to lack of knowledge or understanding, it equates to poor standards, unskilled workers and and insufficient budgets.
@@copporn1615 you think Vice has ethics? You think ANY journalist has ethics?? NO. It’s your fault if you fall for it. It’s your fault if you assume they obey ethics. Don’t be naive.

This was weak. The real story is that most of the animals are doing very well. People taking their habitat are more destructive that radiation. Things couldn't be much better for the animals now that the people are gone.
***** Exactly.. this was just a rich guy wanting to get drunk with a hot Ukrainian chick and kill some mutated animals. He just so happens to be the founder of Vice, so why not film it and put it on youtube for all to see?
Well humans aren't going to put up with death rates like that... However, for animals it is less horrible than humans. Sad that nuclear war would be a blessing for nature :(
The firemen didn't survive because they were drunk. The firemen died and it is really disrespectful to say that they were drunk on the job. Where did that information come from? I have never heard that those brave men were drunk while fighting the fire.
Drogo Baggins they were drunk to protect themselves from radiation, that’s why these reporters were drunk. alcohol somewhat protects you just research it
Legend says Chernobyl was the birthplace of the super slav. Super Slav was just a regular soviet vodka boy for the local bulletfactory but one day at Chernobyl bullets Inc. he stayed behind to make bullets of Papa Starlin during the meltdown. The radiation turned him into SUPER SLAV DEFENDER OF RUSSIA.
This guys docs are normally pretty good, respectful and informative (e.g. all his work on North Korea and their labour camps) but he made a mistake in this one and got drunk and acted disrespectfully. Chernobyl is an interesting place and I feel if this guy did an actually doc on it, it would be interesting.

@@shameless4229 ever heard of the video where they teach you how to smoke weeed out of a crab leg?
You can tell theyve never been hunting
You can even tell that they're on a shooting range... The building has lanes, earthwall on the right, wall on the left, and even four wooden/metal constructs for target practice on the left downrange... it's so fake... It does not even count as propaganda anymore...
7:16 "we're in a ... (think of a lie) ... deserted building" lol.
or shooting.
"This is what happens when we play with technology we don't understand."
This deserves a place in The Great Hall of the Stupidest Things Ever Said By A Human Being. The problem is human/government/corporate ignorance and greed.
he was drunk. he also said machine guns instead of rifles
ProgHead777 Well, those workers probably did not understand the technology. Technically.
Also, he was drunk.
Damm you Shinra, sucking all the mako energy from earth!
I think he meant back then not now
+Cory King Even then, how else do you learn? A child doesn't know/ believe that a stove that is turned on is hot until he touches a hot burner.
+ryan owesney might be they worked on this power plant back then... that would explain a lot...
They are journalists. They don't have to understand shit. They just write articles about it, so they can make money out of them. Period.
We understood it back then, too. Shoddy Soviet engineering doesn't equate to lack of knowledge or understanding, it equates to poor standards, unskilled workers and and insufficient budgets.
Literally just an excuse to get alone time with that poor girl that didn't want to say no cause he's her boss lmfao

I agree this was a terrible event, not sure why someone wouldn't, but I find it so interesting to see abandoned towns, cities, whatver. There's something about them that is just so cool and it's why i like post-apocalyptic stories so much
Im so happy to see people down here in the comments that actually know something about chernobyl... Which vice apperently does not.
Who else got recommended this 7 years later?

This was weak. The real story is that most of the animals are doing very well. People taking their habitat are more destructive that radiation. Things couldn't be much better for the animals now that the people are gone.
Shut the fuck up, hippie
Imran Khan Go make love to your hippie friend
Chris Krizzle hippies don't have guns and chainsaws. Your anger indicates a miserable existence.
Drogo Baggins they were drunk to protect themselves from radiation, that’s why these reporters were drunk. alcohol somewhat protects you just research it
jaden
Where are you getting this information? The only things I can find about this say that alcohol can make radiation exposure worse.
jaden schaeffer you don't know anything do u??
Drogo Baggins but how u know they wernt tho
They were drunk because alcohol protects from radiation and they weren’t on the job they were the only ones there it was before you were alive shut up
"my throat is getting scratchy maybe it's not safe?"
Chernobyl guide: "IS FINE MY FRIEND DRINK THIS!"
*Thrusts vodka towards you*

PlasticEater it’s not that radioactive now
Natalie Chambers he's drunk 100%o f the time. Wut do u expect lol
Didn't know a Dragunov was a machine gun. But I guess I should be more concerned about the fact that he's shooting it while drunk...
sassy
+Squedz He seems to have played a bit too much STALKER. Then again, if he had, he wouldn't run after a wild boar into the red forest.
+Squedz on CoD it is
+Squedz And I thought Aks were assault rifles not machine guns
+ThePyro
In Russia they are full auto machine guns
Radioactive beasts of Chernobyl.....Gotta catch 'em all

+I suck At PVP they're also in fallout 4
What'll get you is the yuo gui
hopefully not deathclaws
don't forget about the mutated lizards, "Deathclaws"
Legend says Chernobyl was the birthplace of the super slav. Super Slav was just a regular soviet vodka boy for the local bulletfactory but one day at Chernobyl bullets Inc. he stayed behind to make bullets of Papa Starlin during the meltdown. The radiation turned him into SUPER SLAV DEFENDER OF RUSSIA.
Bob Ross nice he shall save the fatherland comrade
Bob Ross e
*cough* life of boris cough*
Tfw Chernobyl is in Ukraine
*HARDBASS INTENSIFIES..
Imagine how much footage they probably shot for this, and this is the best of it. It’s episodes like this is what taints VICE’s credibility.
It (radioactively) sickens me to see so many Fallout references in the comments and so few S.T.A.L.K.E.R. references or mentions.
P.S. DRAGUNOV IS NOT MACHINE GUN, NOR IS KALASHNIKOV MACHINEGUN, ONE IS SNIPER RIFLE AND THE OTHER IS ASSAULT RIFLE, REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

4:46 the building you shoot a sniper out of
VICE way off base with this one, it just seemed like this story was a cover for Shane to chat up that girl. Utterly pointless..
Now that I rewatched I realize what an awful decision that was to take drunk reporters out to an abandoned radioactive city to shoot wild animals. Like yeah Nothing can go wrong there
Vices' co-founder comes off as the douchiest most interesting man in the world.
1:00 That's why you don't drink kids
Rock Fist this is why you drink wtf xD
😔
That part was great
SPOILER: No "radioactive beasts" were shown...
Expectation: (one shots wild boar)
Reality:(10 shots to the boar and still nothing)
Just wait until they see a Deathclaw.
I know its a joke but I'm sure the United States made deathclaws not Russia.
+Diego Perez Salazar Its not in Russia btw
+ritzeedesigns it was when it blew up
+Parker Wood No it wasn't. As the guy in the video says, Soviet Union, not Russia, not Ukraine. If you wanna be precise anyway it was the Ukrainian SSR, one of many SSRs which together constitute the Soviet Union. Still no Russia.
We're not even gonna see the dead boars?
+VYKnight_ADark there where no boars it was just a clickbait story. not saying that the boars dont exist its just the boars werent there. I mean if there where boars there they could have easily filmed them
WhiteBwoi
:/
epic fail
there are no mutated animals at all. national geographic did a study and basically all the wolves are the same along with many other animals....
no not mutated "changed" mutation is a strong word often taken otu of meaning a mutation is a genetic change in the structure of dna what most people confuse as mutqation is actually jsut a deformity
I just came here after watching the North Korean workers in Russia special, and I've determined Vice mostly seems to be Shane Smith wandering around the world while incredibly drunk and meeting interesting characters and seeing interesting sights. Genuinely love it.
we never even got to see the animals they where hunting!!!!!!!!
Joe smith because there weren't any
The only things I saw abandoned in this video were the principles of journalism.
Why did they have to drink so much? And I didn't see any "radioactive beasts" in this video. Why did they even bother?
Most people are gonna watch and be like “oh cool” or something like that but for me I just remember Captain Price bringing me here in COD 4.
Hunting the Radioactive Beasts of Chernobyl?!?!? more like "lets drink at Chernobyl"
Jonny ConCarne hunting Trump
The interviewers being constantly drunk was pretty annoying. I don't know why they did that, but alcohol definitely does not protect you from radiation in any way.
You'd only know if you were drunk haha
Apparently it makes it worse! skeptics.stackexchange.com/questions/15972/does-alcohol-consumption-have-an-effect-on-radiation-poisoning
you dont watch vice documentrys often do you ? if he goes some where and he can get drunk there he is fucking drunk ther e
5krat I actually do watch quite a lot of Vice documentaries. But since you seem to be an expert you certainly know that there are more reporters than just this guy.
They were in Russia, what did you expect.
I think it's funny that people actually believe that "Radioactive Beasts" exist.
they do or will in the next couple hundred of years cause evolution and changes take generations of it being "common"
72 no...due to radiation polution Cancer cells will activated and double if not triple their effect on all organisms that were effected by the accident causing the animals to Die in a matter of a few years
Comunist Poland Ball Cancers cells are naturally active, radiation or no; the fact is that we dont know the full extent of the effects of radiation on wildlife.
Drunk Joyless German yes i agree, but they arent as active as when put through a specific radiation wave, but no i dont think that you are right with 'we dont know the effect of radiation on wildlife' actually researchers from Russia, Japan, Germany and USA did put animals through tests involving SMALL ammounts of gamma radiation
There is radioactive animals that exist.... but you can't really tell that, they could be larger or smaller than average
I can just imagine him telling them this would be so Gonzo. The problem is that Hunter S. Thomson wasn't just drunk, he was also talented.
This journalist was way too american stereotype.
He's also an immigrant from Canada
and he has a net worth of over 400 million. So I dont think he gives a fuck.
Heisenberger
And hes also plastered, so you can't quite blame him.
...He's Canadian though.
Jacob Greenberg and? Last time i checked canada was part of america...
I would really love to hang out with Shane Smith.
Would of been cool to of been on that trip with him and Simon in Siberia looking for North Korean workers.
Why do i immediately imagine a radioactive manbearpig from the title of this video......
LOL!
This man is the greatest journalist the world has ever known.
7:08 *(holding a sniper rifle)* "we managed to get some assault rifles"
Actually even worse he called them "machine guns"...
Rich Westman XD
Lol
He said machine guns and in his defense, he was drunk.
auto sniper
I was thinking "There is a Deathclaw around the corner" all video
this should really be called "We took a train and drank a lot"
In Italy it's a custom for them to offer you a panini if you take it they will sing the entire hey Panini song by lil nas

CHernobyl is in Ukraine, not Russia, so not rubles, but hrivna's.
Tomaš Staševskij yes I knew that but I was lazy to look up the currency of the Ukraine, I do apologise for my ignorance :(. But at least i'm not completely ignorant like some who think the Ukraine and Russia use the Euro :D
iskela45 I looked up a trip to Pripyat and the information on the site said that even disturbing the foliage on trees within the local area around Pripyat/Chernobyl would unsettle microscopic amounts of caesium/plutonium/uranium to float into the air and that you would most likely inhale at least a small amount which would give you at the very least, mild carcinogenic problems
