Honestly, since Disney owns all the merch and gets all the $$$ from any spiderman item being sold, even 5% is good. They want a re-negotiation? Maybe a 8% or 9%, but higher than than is just Disney being the money-hungering mouse they are :P
Rockstar 1996 Weeeeeeeellllll.... considering that Sony and Amy Pascal were the ones to choose Tom, and that Disney and Feige wanted Asa Butterfield, I wouldn’t be so sure 😆

Rockstar 1996 well in this situation, it’s not really much of a choice. TheMusic4Soul lol even if they didnt have a deal with sony they would still get his merchandise money because marvel owns his IP idiot and marvel hires the cast writes the script directs it sony only releases it they lucky disney go higher then 50/50 considering its their freakin movie and character
@@Rushking20 it's NOT their character. Sony bought the rights to Spiderman, meaning they can do whatever they want with him, they can change him how they want

This is easily one of the most level-headed, objective, well-researched, and logical reactions I have seen yet. Kudos to you, Sean, for taking the time to examine the entire issue, and not just going for some sensational, click-bait, knee-jerk reaction. You’re one of the best RUclipsrs out there for a reason. Keep up the good stuff man!
Disney get all of the merchandise and can use him in disney theme parks. I dont think that it is fair to only use the 50/50 profit from box office without looking at all of the benefits that Disney get
Agreed but it sounds more like Disney doesn't want to use up a timeslot where the get less than 50% of the box office. This is Sony's cash cow and no way they'd willing give up that much control. Why would they?
Azza T-90 yeah, it makes sense that Disney wants more money if it’s taking up a time slot, but 50% is kinda a lot since it’s still technically Sony’s property. Sony should recognize that part of the reason Spiderman Far From Home became their highest grossing film is because it followed up Endgame and because it’s part of the mcu. Disney should get a higher percentage of the box office earnings, but they shouldn’t be too greedy. They are making enough money with all of there other movies, but spiderman played a part of those movies. Maybe not a huge part but he’s already made enough of a presence that it would be disappointing to see him go and it might ruin any plans they had for him down the line.
All of you are right on this one. Yes, Disney shouldn't made a deal as incredibly high as 50/50. Do a 20/80 or 25/75 deal like you said Mr Meames 89. But this is still a huge problem for Tom Holland's Spider-Man franchise. Both Tom Holland and director Jon Watts are signed to do a third and forth Spider-Man movie and the only way those movies can work is the MCU connection. If they continue his Spider-Man story without the MCU continuity and without the MCU characters like Happy Hogan, Nick Fury, Maria Hill and Talos, then the movie will fail.
Anton Kristenson You’re absolutely right, the movie just wouldn’t make sense for all of those characters to just disappear. Even if Sony did know what they were doing the movie wouldn’t flow correctly without them being able to mention anything that happened to Tom Holland’s Spiderman before. So they should really just come to some kind of deal so they don’t do anything to ruin mcu spiderman and anything they had planned for him in the future.
Not first Edit: I think the deal was doomed from the beginning. Two big rivaling companies making a deal. Eventually one of them would want more that would not be realistic and end the entire deal.
I think Disney is more wrong here for making an outrageous demand (even though their already so huge). I’d say people are only blaming Sony because they’re upset about taking Spider-man out of the mcu and, since Sony’s decision to cut the deal caused it, their default response is to rage at Sony. of course I’m upset about Spider-man leaving the mcu as well, but I’m not just gonna blindly blame Sony if Disney tries to be unreasonable. If Disney tried to change the existing deal to something more beneficial to them but still reasonable and Sony refused, of course then Sony would be more at fault, but that’s not the case is it
Some deal will go through... MCU Spiderm-Man is just too valuable... heck, after this fiasco, people will see it as a more fragile, exclusive IP, and eat up the next product. Leaking the denial of that 50/50 offer is a kind of dirty marketing tactic at this point. But what's more troubling is, Disney goes full Game of Thrones power play and mindgames on Sony right now. What a crazy world.
Btw it’s 5% of the first dollar gross not the overall gross. So that’s only 5% of the money on opening day, that’s not much for a company like Disney. Of course 50/50 is ridiculous but 5% of the first day seems so low considering what they are providing.
Tyler Hearty • Don’t forget about merchandise. Disney gets all of those money. Toys makes money and always overtakes the box offices. Let Disney negotiate that with Sony and it’s a better conversation.
@@Whizkidd2025 so make Disney negotiate a deal of merch rights that Sony sold to Disney back in 2011........... thats not Disneys fsult Sony screwed up and needed money. Thats literally the same as blaming Sony for not working with Marvel because Sony owns the spiderman movie rights. Its stupid. Marvel made a bad deal in the 90s, Sony made a bad deal in 2011.
Tyler Hearty • never said that it was Disney’s fault. They are a business. It’s smart. Why not buy those rights? What I said is that if Disney were to offer those as an option, it would be better. That’s my only point. Sony is getting short changed so I get why they don’t wanna give up 50% if they don’t even get merchandise.
@@Whizkidd2025 but its their fault they dont. Theyve even admitted they jumped the gun. And a point that no one can seem to understand is that the main reason FFH hit a billion is the MCU. It cant be denied. Unless youre Sony and think you can do this on your own like they do. They literally hired the dude who trashed many marvel franchises to helm their spiderverse, instead of try and make a deal (almost all sources are agreeing Sony made no counter offer). And its also being wildly reported the deal Disney sent was 70/30 profit, 50/50 costs, which would be a steal for sony as they only pay for half the movie and get 70%. Say 30% is too much thats fine, but to not come back with an offer is just spitting in Disneys face. The guy they hired even said they dont need fieges playbook anymore. This same dude forced xmen origins wolverine to sew Deadpool's mouth shut. Im almost certain he was also responsible for Galactus looking like a giant cloud in F4 silver surfer. Sony had it made with Fiege prouding their movies for completely free.
@@Matt90Nine Exactly. Disney can also use Spidey in Avengers movies and are building a Spider-Man theme park without Sony getting a dime from either. Talk about wanting your cake and eating it too.
@@Matt90Nine This^^^ Sony could of ask for Merchandise sales and 5% of marvel movies for using Spider-man but no Sony takes zero profit from it. I think Disney got a good deal from Sony.
This is really a bummer because the way Kevin Feige and marvel has set up Tom Hollands spiderman to adjust in the mcu. Removing him from the mcu and continue without the mcu is going to be pretty much impossible. I think and i hope that they will find some new deal between the brands like maybe 25% profits for marvel and 75% profits for sony. I just hope that they can settle this deal as soon as possible so that it doesn't end up like the James Gun GOTG 3 thing where they pretty much paused the production of the movie for months. Great video as always, keep up the great work.
@@jmac4652 Sony only owns the movie rights, most of the merchandise is derived directly from the comic book character, which Marvel has no problem. So Sony don't really have a legit claim for that. Then again Disney demanding more than 30 from direct movie revenue is just outrageous. Brandon Holmes... you have a pretty great proposal tho.
@@janosd4nuke I was just going for a funny counter offer. @Nobody 20 got the gist of it! Anyway, all the info we have now could be completely wrong, but IF it is true this is how I see things. If you look at the spike in merchandise directly after the films, it dwarves that of the comics, an industry which is on its knees dying right now. There is a reason for all the different Spidey suits we've seen so far from the MCU version. Disney cannot rely on the comics and have, for the most part, neglected that industry since they bought Marvel. Disney gets to use Spidey in Avengers movies and pays nothing, they also get to use other Spidey characters in their movies (subject to Sony's agreement) and are also planning to rake in the dough with the new Spider-Man section in their theme park (its under construction at the moment), so that's numerous revenue streams for them stemming from this character. To demand more from Sony for the movie collaboration (especially if the reported 50% figure is accurate) reminds me of the Mob trying to get a piece of every action and is just so transparently greedy, IMO.
I think because what was sold by Marvel to Sony is just the film rights.. so when Disney bought Marvel, all rights including merch, were acquired except the film rights which was sold separately.
That's actually Sony's fault. They sold the merchandising rights back to marvel in 2011. Terrible move on their part. I still blame disney more though.
Spider-Man: Mr. Feige? I don't feel so good. Kevin Feige: You're alright. Spider-Man: I don't know - I don't know what's happening. I don't want to go, I don't want to go... sir please, I don't want to go... I don't want to go... I'm sorry.
It is 100% Disney to blame. 50/50 split, no studio in there right mind would agree to that. Plus the spiderman "Universe" is Sony's highest grossing property, so giving half of all control and prophets to disney would be a terrible idea. Maybe Disney getting 20-25 percent would be better.
You didn't mention that DISNEY also has 100% of the Spider-Man merchandising rights and 100% of Spider-Man brand usage in their Theme parks. They are building a Marvel park including a huge Spider-Man section as we speak. Both are billion-dollar segments in their own right. I don't understand why Disney would risk cutting all creative input in such an important character. Because Mr. Feige has no time? Please !! If anything, Disney should be paying Sony 5% for the rights to have creative input and to use the character in the MCU and be happy with the merchandising/theme parks….

I want my place back then. Disney: Ok you suck, I hate you. Also I gonna tell the tenant (Audience) that they can't have the place anymore and it's on you. Audience: Sony, You SUCK! Sony: Wait, what the hell did I do? **SONY IS NOT TO BE BLAMED** When will people realise this? Disney borrowed Spiderman from Sony for the MCU movies. Sony earned 0% from those movies. [Civil War/Infinity War/End-Game] Sony had NO REASON to do that. You guys got to thank Sony that we even had Spiderman in the first place. Disney benefited from having Spiderman in the movies which they got for FREE, along with all the revenue those movies generated. Face it, Infinity War/End-Game wouldn't have done this well without Spiderman. Instead of repaying kindness, Disney is in-turn trying to BULLY Sony. Disney had 5% revenue and 100% of all Spider-man merchandise for something they DIDN'T OWNED. Now they are asking for 50% revenue and 100% Spider-man merchandise? This is an outright bully tactic. Sony did the right thing here.
This definitely was a bully tactic by Disney. It almost makes sense that they made such an outrageous offer because they knew Sony would turn it down, which would cause the massive outrage from fans directed towards Sony that were seeing now.
Fernando Rios the certain department in Disney that would own Spider-Man, if he was bought out, would be marvel. So although Disney would own him, he would be incorporated with the marvel section in Disney.
Chickenphat they wanted to split it 50-50 but like Sean said that’s not right because marvel sold the rights of Spider-Man to Sony and they took a huge chance and it became successful that’s like if you’re the big brother and your lil brother starts making all the money and the big brother try to say u owe me half that’s not righ
Ethan White it’s not even like that I really want both of them to come to agreement because Spider-Man is my fav hero I’m just saying how is Disney gonna try and bully Sony the rights of Spider-Man back when Sony took a huge chance the fact your supporting bullies makes u a 🤡
I honestly blame Disney for this. They had a good thing going and they ruined it. Sure they only make 5% of the gross, but only for SOLO Spider-Man movies, which grants access to Disney to put him in ANY other Marvel movies. Endgame and Infinity War both made over 2 billion dollars, with Spider-Man in both, so while I do think Disney could have proposed a different deal, like 85/15 for Sony, overall, Disney should have stuck with their original deal and kept using Spider-Man in other movies ALONG with his solo outings.
I blame disney because they make 100% of merchandise sales. 50/50 would mean disney would make more money than sony, off of the film sony owns the rights to.
I read a rumor about a possible 30/70 split in favor of Sony where Sony would have permission to suggest adding other characters like Venom into the MCU.
This makes me very sad. I did not realize how much I needed MCU Spidey until I found out about this. All these companies only care about money and success and not actually their audiences’ satisfaction. I hope they don’t drop the hints at a Sinister Six team up either. The deal lasted for a good three years, and now it’s time for rich companies to be rich companies.
Disney is easily the one to blame for this whole situation in my personal opinion. Sony and their original agreement with Disney was absolutely fair, that is Sony gets the majority of the profits of the films but they pay for the production costs and give Marvel complete and utter creative freedom and ALL merchandising rights to MCU Spiderman, which is a LOT of money to say the least! Disney is just being greedy because they are seeing how much Sony is profiting from the MCU Spiderman films, but Sony are earning that money rightfully under the established contract and ownership rights of the character. I honestly find it absolutely absurd that Sony is being called greedy by Disney fans when it is the opposite situation, Sony pays for all of the production costa of the films and grants Marvel/Disney all creative freedom with their character as long as they get the majority of the film profits and Disney gets all of the merch profits, that's totally fair to the majority of reasonable people out there who look at the facts, but that is not good enough for power hungry, money-loathing Disney. Keep fighting the good fight Sony, I agree with you guys completely, don't surrender you rights to the Spiderman character to greedy higher ups!
I still blame Sony for everything. In one point, Disney wanted to much, but Sony offered to little. Aside from the fact that Disney has already made better live-action Spiderman than Sony, they are already a big and smart company, the REASON for Disney making alot of money is because of there smart tactics. I mean, Spiderman Far From Home was the first to hit a billion and Sony still decides that this was the way to go. Disney wants Spiderman and ONLY Spiderman, having him in the MCU means that it will make not only more money, but also it pleases people, remember Spiderman is still one of the most iconic superheroes, and Disney has treated him much better than Sony. So, i still blame Sony for everything, for not seeing the outcomes this might have.
I think that Maybe Disney went in with that number as a starting number and were prepared for negotiations because they said they wanted to be "partners" when it comes to the character so maybe they were prepared to give Sony a portion of the merch in exchange for more box office, I feel like it's more complex than what outlets are saying it is
@@jasonking7570 Then Carnage would have to be family-friendly, or they would leave Carnage out of Venom 2. And with Venom earning that much, putting those films in the MCU (what might boost the box office) but only getting 50% is a very bad deal for Sony. Even if Venom 2 would somehow make in the MCU 1.2 billion, that means Sony gets only 600 million, so 200 million less than what Venom 1 gave them.
@@magic75450 not necessarily. You know that Disney has released R rated movies in the past, right? And if marvel/Disney puts in the work live they've done on the Spider-Man films, and we get a better film out of it, dont they deserve a good percentage?
Obviously both companies want to make more money... but something that is being overlook is the merch rights for spider movies under the old deal. Disney didn't have only 5% over the overall box office, but also had 100% of all merch. In the new deal, they proposed the 50/50 split while keeping the 100% merch for them. Totally, not fair...
Both companies are being greedy bastards But I blame Disney more I’d propose maybe 20-30% profit for disney I honestly don’t care to much as long as Ned mj and all the other homecoming characters stay in. Yes i want happy and fury to stay but if sont takes back the rights to bad but I won’t be freaking out
@@braumkimball9548 why? If you start a negotiation high, you have plenty of room to work down. If you start low or where you actually want to end up, then you can very easily end up below where you want. And I fomt see why it's such an insult since marvel/Disney is doing all the work.
I agree that there is greed motivating both sides. However, if Spider-Man being in the MCU made the character more successful than it was after TASM 2 came out, I think Disney is right to ask for more money. Sony needed Spidey to be in the MCU for people to support and get excited ANOTHER reboot.
I think Disney just had 50-50 at start and wanted to bargain down to 30/20/15 Only the 50-50 was reported by deadline when it was leaked (by disney to put fandom pressure on Sony) Renegotiations are going on so it might be decreasing.
Not just the 5% they get. Disney also get 100% sales for merchandise of spider-man and can use Spider-man for free for Themepark/Marvel movies like Avengers and Civil war(Sony takes zero profit from that).People have to understand its not just the 5% of ticket sales.
MyName is Jeff well is disney the one doing the work in the last films sony just lend them use their character maybe a 50/50 is a bit much but i dont really see the big problem
Sony’s three franchises are 1. Jumanji, which hasn’t proven yet to be more than a one hit wonder 2. Bond which they just lost to mgm 3. Spider-Man-why would they give up 50% of their only continuing successful franchise!
People also don’t seem to know that Disney is getting all of the profits from merchandise with the deal they had. So Disney is still making money from that aspect of the deal as well. The contact was not just about profits from the films themselves.
In my opinion disney are in the wrong They already sold this character to sony so 50% of the profit is ridiculous Sure they should get some more but not 50%
Marvel will be fine with the MCU not having Spider-Man Sony will be fine making independent Spider-Man movies The absolute worst ones off in this situation are the fans
This is why you wait before you pick sides.... Updated reports state Disney actually didn't do the unthinkable and ask for 50/50 split but instead it was a more reasonable 30/70 split. Sony appears to have been the party who leaked tainted info to deadline in order to play victim and pressure Disney. Its the reason Disney has kept quite while Sony keeps yapping themselves into a hole. Sony denied this offer and then refused to counter with anything reasonable. The deal Disney proposed wasn't insulting in my opinion because Disney made Sony's product good again and they made Sony successful again so they were thinking maybe the should get a little bit more now but that's my opinion 😉
Yeah, but Sony owns Spiderman. And Disney makes a lot of money with him already. It's just disgusting how Disney thinks they can get everything, just because they are Disney. Just like a little rich jock, who thinks he can do anything he wants
Sean if this does occur could you make a video on possible plot ideas for future Spider-Man movies not tied with the mcu? The most obvious maybe involving venom perhaps?
I disagree with you. Sony is the greedy party here. Spider-Man belongs to the MCU. Sony got Spider-Man when Marvel went bankrupt. Sony should have really just came back with a counter-offer and not just walked away.
Spider-man DOES NOT belong to the MCU. That is factually untrue. And if your starting assumption is that the MCU is entitled to Spider-man, you're starting from an incredibly biased perspective. As you stated, Sony has the rights to Spider-man. Disney agreed to a deal because they wanted the character. Disney changed the deal. It's baffling to suggest the person sticking to the deal is the greedy party. It's baffling to state something belongs to someone when obviously it is owned by someone else.
Sean Chandler Talks About ...No, Sony just owns the movie rights (which they got when Marvel was at their lowest point) and Marvel/Disney owns the actual characters. Sony is being greedy by keeping the movie rights AFTER Marvel/Disney created a successful movie franchise, just rewatch Amazing Spider-Man 2. Sony is also trying to create a second franchise separate from their deal with Marvel/Disney. So who is the greedy party here again?
@@BigGator5 And demanding a 50-50 split of something you don't have the rights to and aren't entitled to isn't greedy? The suggestion that Sony is greedy for keeping what they own is inherently suggesting that everyone that owns anything is greedy.
Sean Chandler Talks About ...That's the point of negotiations, my friend. The whole offer/counter-offer is a time honor tradition. However Sony just walked away after the opening bid by Disney. They held all the power right up until #BoycottSonySpiderman started trending. Now Sony is, at this point, crawling back to the negotiation table with that hashtag hanging over their heads.
Sony also went to marvel to make Spider-Man mcu films because when marvel sold the rights in the contract it said that they had to make a Spider-Man movie every three years or else they had to forfeit the rights so I think Sony went to Disney just so they could retain the rights
This is what I read: For the solo films disney only gets 5% but for the movies with marvels property like the avengers or civil war, sony gets nothing. Disney wanted 50/50 for the solo films and when sony asked why not keep the same deal, disney cut the negotiation. And for those who are saying sony is greedy, disney is worse
Finally a satisfying video where Disney is to blame not Sony who owns the rights and in where Disney asked 50% for spiderman movie rights and it's relating characters
Disney gets top dollar gross, (that’s the money a movie makes opening day), 5% of the overall box office and 100% of merchandise. Now they want 50% Sony look at that deal and goes, “there’s no money for us to made here” of course Sony would turn it down. Especially when Sony is paying for making these movies and would continue to do
I think part of Sony’s reasoning may be that, say they keep a deal with Disney, the next Spider-Man movie won’t come out till at least 2022, but probly later. Maybe they won’t make $1 billion on there next Spider-Man movie, but they could realistically make 2 movies by 2023 that would surpass the profits they’d make from one movie with Disney at that time. Rooting for negotiations!
I think that Disney should negotiate anywhere from 15-30% profits, but not just profit from box office profit from merchandise sales and online purchases. But also give Disney access to use more Spiderman characters
I have a question if anyone knows the answer. Who owns the rights to all of Spiderman's supporting characters like Ned, MJ, Aunt May etc? Are they still Marvel or did Sony buy them as well?

Disney deserves much more than 5%, but 50% was too much to ask. I blame both sides and hope they renegotiate
Me too... but then again... that FOX deal...
Disney get all of the merchandise and can use him in disney theme parks. I dont think that it is fair to only use the 50/50 profit from box office without looking at all of the benefits that Disney get
Alex P Disney owns Fox lol
@@vladimirlenin3068 And they lost a lot for it
@@vladimirlenin3068 Yeah, CUZ THEY BOUGHT THEM
Yeah you’re right, they should just renegotiate. Maybe 25/75. So Disney is making a decent amount of money, but Sony still has most of it.
It should be 80/20
Disney: *Asks for 50/50*
Sony: *Takes away Spider-Man*

Disney is the bad guy here..
Disney is the bad guy for asking for more than 5% for something they do the majority of the work for?
Byron Walsh Yeah , if they own everything else relating to this 50/50 it’s unfair
Not first
Edit: I think the deal was doomed from the beginning.
If Disney tried to change the existing deal to something more beneficial to them but still reasonable and Sony refused, of course then Sony would be more at fault, but that’s not the case is it
Finally, someone who speaks english
I really not mad about it. For me Tom is turning into Tony stark 2.0
Exactly what ive been saying. Idk how can you call disney greedy and not sony when sony made a billion bucks and disney got less than 2 million
Tyler Hearty • never said that it was Disney’s fault. They are a business. It’s smart. Why not buy those rights? What I said is that if Disney were to offer those as an option, it would be better.

Removing him from the mcu and continue without the mcu is going to be pretty much impossible. I think and i hope that they will find some new deal between the brands like maybe 25% profits for marvel and 75% profits for sony.
100% agree. Also Disney have a hundred percent of merchandise sales. Who's being unreasonable 🧐

Possibly 75 percent to Sony and 25 percent to Disney
You didn't mention that DISNEY also has 100% of the Spider-Man merchandising rights and 100% of Spider-Man brand usage in their Theme parks. They are building a Marvel park including a huge Spider-Man section as we speak. Both are billion-dollar segments in their own right. I don't understand why Disney would risk cutting all creative input in such an important character. Because Mr. Feige has no time? Please !!

I say for Disney at least15% and at most 25%
I blame disney because they make 100% of merchandise sales. 50/50 would mean disney would make more money than sony, off of the film sony owns the rights to.
Btw spiderman merchandise makes over 1 billion dollars every year so disney is already making as much if not more than sony off of spiderman.
I just want Spider-Man 4 with Sam Raimi directing and starring Tobey

The deal lasted for a good three years, and now it’s time for rich companies to be rich companies.
sony 70%-disney-30%
I think 70/30 would be fine and I REALLY hope this works out
I still blame Sony for everything.
I think Disney is getting a ridiculous monopoly over the film industry. They're taking the piss with 50/50.
Sean you put my comment on top in the video "july 2019 haul", i love your channel i just want to say that it's a honor, and thank you
25/75 or 20/80
I think that Maybe Disney went in with that number as a starting number and were prepared for negotiations because they said they wanted to be "partners" when it comes to the character so maybe they were prepared to give Sony a portion of the merch in exchange for more box office, I feel like it's more complex than what outlets are saying it is
From what I hear, Disney wanted not only 50% from Spiderman movies, but also 50% from the Venomverse movies.
I can already feel Disney's downfall.
Well I believe they wouldve also brought the venomverse into the MCU
@@jasonking7570
Then Carnage would have to be family-friendly, or they would leave Carnage out of Venom 2.

I agree that there is greed motivating both sides. However, if Spider-Man being in the MCU made the character more successful than it was after TASM 2 came out, I think Disney is right to ask for more money. Sony needed Spidey to be in the MCU for people to support and get excited ANOTHER reboot.

Great vid, glad you addressed every possible perspective and then camel to a reasonable conclusion.
Very refreshing!
Fun Fact: The Russo Brothers have said before that there was never a version of the Civil War Airport fight without Spider-Man.
Yeah, I mean hate Sony for taking Spider-Man off the MCU but I hate Disney for asking 50%, I think like 25% or 30% is good enough right?
Yup
When I heard this I blamed Sony, but the more I read about it I think it's Disney's fault, they should have asked for a smaller percent
