Traditional fingerstyle guitar is particular to its time and place, drawing heavily upon local cuture, but allowing for personal expression and innovation. Each of the artists presented here is a master of fingerstyle guitar, whether two- or three-finger picking. With rare exceptions, most were born around the turn of the century, or in its early years.

I saw Sam McGee do a solo performance at an outdoor festival at Horse Pens 40 in Alabama a few months before was killed in tractor accident. He sat in a cane bottom chair on the stage, dressed in a white shirt and tie and played a lot of good traditional music with his great thumb-picking style. Glad I saw him.

He was a real pioneer of lead guitar, Merle Travis especially was influenced by Sam's playing

Great great stuff. I only wish their recorded output was larger.

Parts of it remind me of Pink Anderson and Clarence Greene
