- Aquatics expert Tom Sarac provides an in-depth overview of one of the most popular aquarium plants - Java Fern! In the wild, it's found along the banks of rivers and streams throughout most of Southeast Asia. An epiphyte, Java Fern grows on rocks, wood and other surfaces in the aquarium, holding on tightly with its root systems. When planting Java Fern, ensure the rhizome is not submerged below the substrate, as this will lead to it rotting and the plant dying!

I love Java ferns I will aways try to add some to all my aquarium, Have a good Xmas & new year all.
Very concise yet very informative video ❤
We're glad it was helpful! 😄
I love plants in my 20 gallon shrimp tank , but Jaba Fern is not one of my favorites ..
Tks for sharing.
I've been propagating java fern in a covered plastic tub. I place the cuttings on about 2 inches of soil without burying the rhizome.
With this method they have grown into the highest quality java fern I have ever had.
With that said, I don't understand why so many people say they almost exclusively take in nutrients through the water column and won't survive otherwise.
Great video 😊 I have some in my aquarium
Great presentation! Very clear.👍
Thank you! 😁
Great video

I appreciate the informative videos you create and share. It feels like aquarium school and my fish tanks are improving because of them. I enjoy this hobby because there is always something new to learn and your RUclips channel surely helps. Thank you.

I have always loved java fern, but not had great success with it over the years. As my tap water is very hard, have been recently softening it with rainwater which does seem to be of benefit to it, and overall the whole tanks health.
My Java fern keeps going having leaves brown though (but other leaves keep growing out to nice green colour, but eventually they go brown and I have to snip them) Is this normal?
It sounds as if you may have a nutrient deficiency in your aquarium! We recommend testing your water to see what it's lacking, so you know what to add! 👌
I think Next video we should do.
Is red cabomba Plans
Thank you for the suggestion! We've added it to our list. 😁

This was the only plant my pleco didn't eat I think because it is very bitter.
Java Fern is not an aquatic plant. All ferns are terrestrial aquarium plants.
Java Fern is farmed on land in commercial nurseries.
Commercial nurseries can only grow java fern on land instead underwater.
In the wild Java Fern can survive underwater for a short period when periodically flooded during the rainy season.
For most of the year they grow on the water’s edge, either with their roots in water or moist soil.
Forcing Java Fern plants to live underwater all the time their leaves will be infested with algae.
In an aquarium setting Java Fern gets stunted with algae.
Terrestrial Java Fern has no long term success living underwater all the time because is not an aquatic plant.
Do you do presentations about South American plants that are suitable for aquariums with small schools of corydora catfish? Thank you for these beautiful tutorials👍
We certainly can! Let us know what species you'd like us to cover. 😁
@@fluval Thank you! Amazon Sword, Elodea, baby tears or short grass-like plants that will grow slowly/moderately slow in the foreground, plusses and minuses of these and any grass-like plant that will give some motion to the scene. I'd like my little corydora to be as happy as possible. I have a 20 long tank, so it's not tall, but easier for a five foot tall person to maintain.
