    One trick I learned recently that helped me a lot is - write in smaller font in the notebook. This way the entire topic can be written on a single page and it is easier to remember. So if a topic has 4 parts i can remember it easily if one part is on top left, another on top right and so on.

    I think I am a visual learner and one curious thing I have noticed is how I recall information.
    For example if I want to recall something, then I need to picturize whether it was on the left/right page, top/bottom half.
    As soon as that blurry image comes into my mind I am able to recall the entire thing.

    I'm definitely a visual learner! The only way I manage to work my way through university articles is because I read the text several times, and every time I do I write notes in different colours, with bullet points and sometimes drawings. I also really enjoy good visual examples for difficult concepts, because once I understand the visual example I can so easily adapt it to new forms of information.

    I remember the embarrassment of having to read several paragraphs spur of the moment, standing in front of 30 professionals. When I got done the lady teaching the class ask me what it meant. I told her I didn't know. She said you just read it. I told her I don't process words like that. Everyone looked at me like I just arrived on the planet.

    • @SharpCookie
      @SharpCookie  3 года назад +1

      This is not as uncommon as people think. Being able to read words on a page is very different from one's level of comprehension. Even comprehension itself is different for different people. Some may only get a basic comprehension and others much deeper. Also you were put on the spot in front of a large group. That would definitely affect your comprehension versus just sitting at home reading the same thing by yourself when you can go at your own pace and re-read parts that confuse you.

    I just want to say thank you. All of these websites and quizzes and general how to know what learning style you are could not help me figure it out. But your explanation? It was spot on. I am a great speller, I remember my notes exactly on what page, I daydream in color, I remember the most detailed information of what someone looks like...all the other information out there on visual learners was not me. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am doing my masters degree in medical science which is the first year of medical school and it has been so so difficult. I never really had to sit down and figure out what helped me until now. I used your tips for my biochemistry exam and I was able to remember so much more information. I can’t thank you enough. I don’t know why you don’t have enough views or subscribers because your channel is top notch. Maybe collaboration with a RUclipsr who is not as indie as you are? You’re amazing, I really believe that God guided me to you that night because I was on the verge of tears. I switched up my entire way of studying and it has helped tremendously. Sorry for this being so long- I just wanted to say thank you.

      Wow!! Thank you so much for such a beautiful and heartfelt comment. RUclips can really take a lot of time and energy, but it's so nice to hear directly from the people I'm helping. I'm so happy you have a plan now for studying that really works for you. It makes a huge difference. As far as my channel, it takes time and consistency to build authority on RUclips and gain a larger audience. I only just started posting this past February, so it'll take some time (like anything worthwhile) to build and grow an organic audience. But of course if you share the videos on social media or with your classmates, that would definitely help too! Again, I'm so happy you found the video helpful and keep me posted on how you do this semester!! All the best!

      I too remember on what page my notes are. I mark numbers on my textbooks to remember all the points; and the pages with the points would just flash through my mind during exams. This is absolutely spot on, thanks for sharing. I have always been a visual learner but I didn't know until much, much later in life because no one else in my family is a visual learner.
    While undergoing tests to see how epilepsy has affected my memory, it was found that my verbal memory was horrible (I can only remember 3 out of 30 words no matter how many times I hear it), but my visual memory is still strong (drawing complex shapes after only getting a glimpse of them). I also have always tested well with spatial recognition, and I assume other visual learners would as well.

    • @SharpCookie
      @SharpCookie  3 года назад +1

      Oh wow, thanks so much for sharing your experience! Yes, as a visual learner myself, I find it relatively easy to rotate shapes in my mind. You seem to be extremely visual though. I have come across other learners like you that are really on the extremes, where their spatial recognition is so good that it's off the charts yet they have some deficits in other areas. It might be worth your while to do some auditory memory drills on a regular basis.

      Aww thank you Tiyasha! I always think it's our responsibility as tutors, teachers, coaches, etc. to discover what works the best for each learner, that's our job! It's not about making the learner fit into our own agenda or how "we like to do things," that doesn't work well ;) It's about experimenting and finding what is most impactful to each student.

I took several test and found out i’m actually a visual now, and I looked up attributes and they literally all apply to me especially the ones you spoke about. The picturing names (i usually associate them with faces), the spelling perfectly, the doodling, diagrams, etc etc.

      Very interesting! I've always been visual, even as a child, but I can definitely see how this could change over time. In our school system kinesthetic learning is the least accepted (you mostly have to sit still in a seat for many hours and are punished if you don't), so perhaps you had to adapt to your environment...? This is just a thought.

I do work well with outlines and am the one to doodle and like drawing, but also I've recently figured out that I have aphantasia to some degree as well. It doesn't really make sense to me how I can be able to at times see the things that I organize and can visualize it, but at the same time I can't picture or see things like an apple if someone say to or even be able to see my parents faces yet I know what they look like. I also find myself needing sound and distractions to get things done or am always fidgeting. I'm probably a 1 off case ,but just thought i'd share and say thank you for the videos.

    I would appreciate tips on proving my attention span.

    • @SharpCookie
      @SharpCookie  2 года назад

      Hi! Attention is a skill that you can definitely improve, and like any skill you need to practice to get better. Do tasks that require your focus, and practice focusing for as long as you can. Some activities that will help improve focus include reading challenging books, meditation, yoga, Tai chi, solving logic puzzles or difficult math problems, and breath work practices. These are just a few examples. They all require you to focus on one thing that is challenging to the mind and/or body and not getting distracted. Over time you should notice that your attention span will improve, and you'll be able to stick to challenging tasks for longer periods of time. Attention is the key to becoming a better learner, so it's worth improving!

    Yes, I am one. I think I pretty much followed your tips just either because I was lucky or it felt right. I’ve know a lot of visual learners who needed to follow your advice. Okay, so I sat in the back of the room when possible, but other than that I followed them. And I do think it hurt my learning some. Thanks for the video, great information.

      You're welcome!! I'm not surprised that a lot of youtube content creators are visual learners. We like to watch videos to take in information, so it's no surprise that we would have a desire to create them for others. And I totally hear you about sitting in the back of the room... I did that for most of my life. Now I'm at the age where I don't really get embarrassed about sitting up front if I'm at a workshop or lecture. And those are the seats that are usually empty! haha

It is true I get distracted easily seeing everything around me. I am also thinking meditation exercises I do that involve visualizations have helped me imagine in more detail places, people and items! 😊

    Love this. I used to draw pictures of all my history essays to depict the events. The people had big feet though and odd faces but that's cause I had no reference. When I drew a squirrel from a book it looked amazing. I can play animations in my head too which is useful for understanding aerodynamics and can feel the pressures changing with the shapes very useful for ideation. I love visual arts, graphics, film painting. I will try these new tips. Also you can put chemical bonds together to come up with chemical compounds. I did that once in class and the teacher said I must have looked it up in a book, I was like no, I just thought of it actually in my head.

    Wow!! , I'm ADHD and I found recently, because of my diagnosis, that I'm definitely a visual learner, I used to highlight my textbooks but without using colors ( duh! :( ) ands also using caps between sentences in order to visualize the key points also without using colors (double duh! :( ). Now I can undestand why I was doing so, even when it was completely intuitive and done in a low effective way. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, greetings from Mexico!

    Fascinating. I'm such a mix between the verbal and the visual. Thinking back to school, I think it really made a difference what topic I was studying. Math and science I was definitely more visual. I remember my calc teacher even moving me to the front of the class!

    • @SharpCookie
      @SharpCookie  4 года назад +1

      Interesting! Yes I definitely think we're a mix. When you need to memorize something like an address or keycode, what do you usually do... Do you repeat it verbally several times or make a rhyme or song out of it or do you try to imprint it visually in your mind so that you see yourself punching in the keycode or see the numbers in your mind?

    • @thanaso1
      @thanaso1 4 года назад

      @@SharpCookie For an address I definitely go the verbal route of repeating it and/or using memorization technique (mnemonic, word association, etc).
      Can you practice learning? Can I become a better visual learning? Or just stick to what comes naturally?

    • @SharpCookie
      @SharpCookie  4 года назад +1

      This is a really great question. You can 100% train yourself and improve in other types of learning or cognitive functions. What most likely happened is, as a child, you found a way that works for you and then kept doing it throughout your life, thereby improving that specific style and strengthening it even more. So you can consciously decide to start practicing memorizing something visually instead of verbally for example. Next time you need to remember an address, close your eyes and see it written out in your mind like a picture. Now the question about whether it's beneficial to train yourself in another way or stick to your current strengths is up to you! There's different schools of thought on this. Even as it relates to life, some people say cultivate what you're good at and others will say practice on improving what you're weak at. It's a bit of a balancing act---I think both is important. Working our brain in new ways than it's used to is always a good thing.
