- Over the last 12 years, David Deutchman has held and soothed over 1,200 babies at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite Hospital. He’s a “baby buddy,” a person who spends time comforting babies who are delivered prematurely or who may require special medical attention. Nicknamed “the baby whisperer” by nurses, David’s nurturing support has become a godsend for parents while they are away at work or caring for children at home.

If I weren't disabled this would be something I'd love to do. I used to be a caregiver to elderly and palliative care patients in their homes, the best job ever! Since a failed surgery to fix tennis elbow I had to give up that job because I couldn't do transfers and lifts safely any longer. 11 years later I'll still drop something heavy if I lift it up in my right hand and now with rheumatoid arthritis I wouldn't even trust myself holding a wee infant 😭 David rocks!

That’s how I was once with my baby cousin. He was screaming so my aunt gave him to me while she went to the bathroom and he was chill like immediately. We’re bros now; he’s like 1 but we’re bros.

Maybe you running across this video was a sign. Used to be a case manager and had a baby in NICU that was abandoned by his mom. It was heartbreaking to see the little guy had no one to visit or care for him, other than the nurses and staff. Being loved is so important. I really hope you consider doing it.

I thought about this comment in a very different way...
Fun fact: studies have shown that babies without love, affection and even being held grow up with mental, emotional, and physical problems! Some of the babies during these studies even died!!! This was done in the 40s.

I think these studies were done in over crowed orphanages to bring awareness that more should adopt and volunteer. Babies, were left in cribs for very long periods of time in understaffed orphanages. Hence me ignoring those that use to tell me I should let my babies cry it out more. I did not. They are super independent now and know they can come to me for anything.
Not hating on those who made the cry it out method work.
I just think it's beneficial to hold babies as much as possible. ❤

Babies don't have mental health. They're babies. They can't and don't have any emotional capacity, no understanding of anything around them or understanding of their own existence. That's not to say they don't have primal needs, but you can't call it mental health.
@@noelleirina5628 develop a basic understanding of cognitive psychology in early development and you'll see that they do. A childs first 6 months, can quite literally have a dramatic impact on the way that they develop as a person later on in life.

Babies that aren't held their first year of life often develop pretty distinct social and mental deficiencies. It is heartbreaking. That's why what this man is doing is so important. 😋
@@noelleirina5628 babies do have mental health. That is such a dumb thing to say. Holding baby has hormonal responses, and ignoring them does too. It changes your whole genetic expression and children left alone, with higher cortisol levels, have different epigenetics than those who were touched and comforted. Even years after their crying, they had markers for weaker immune systems, compared to those who were held and comforted. Most of your immune system is in your gut, where it signals to your brain and your brain to it, your gut health has A LOT to do with your psychological health. Who are you anyway? I am sure you would have been on the same bandwagon as all the doctors who believed babies felt no pain and would perform surgery without any pain management...
I like that they have highlight a male volunteer palying such a role. Gender stereotypes are a two way street and both sides of the coin needs work.

I used to work here! I remember seeing him hold the babies many times in the PICU. What a sweet and loving man!
If you want to do this I would talk to your local children’s hospital. I’ve been doing this weekly for the past year and it’s one of the best moments of each week

How old do you have to be to do this? At the legal working age? Because I’m 14 and I want to make at least one person happy every day, so doing something like this seems perfect (since giving flowers to strangers is scary, tried it once though, it was worth it, the person I gave it to looked so happy). I hope other people get inspired by my actions and do nice things too, the world could use some more kindness.

I’m only 16, but I’ve been diagnosed with depression and anxiety and am struggling to find medications that help, but I work with children ages 2 months to 5 years and it’s one of the few things that truly bring me joy. When I’m in my lowest moments I just think about all the kids I work with and the joy I get from holding them. I think this guy is the same way.

This video means so much to me - I was born 3 months early and had to stay in hospital for another 3 months after I was born. The staff at the hospital were amazing... It's thanks to them that I'm alive and healthy today.

I think somewhere along the road most people realize that the greatest thing in life is kids.
I'm currently studying for a masters degree in business at a highly regarded business school in europe and the pressure is enormous, But wenever I get frustrated and doubtful about wether I will finish my education, I think about my future kids and about how much better their life would be if I pull through. This thought motivates me to persist and overcome my struggles...

I always tell my husband that when he retires he’s going to be one of those people that holds babies because he’s always had a knack for calming fussy babies down. He always smiles and says “I’m more stubborn than they are, they can’t cry forever, I can wait it out.” This is my husband in 40 years:) What a lovely man this is to devote so much time for these families🥰
When my daughter Aniah, who is now going on 4 was in the nicu, there were cuddlers at her hospital. Some days when id come to nurse her, there would be a cuddler holding her. She would always be asleep and they'd tell me how she was their favorite. I thought it was so very nice to have people do this. Nicu babies need all the love and hugs they can get. It really helps these babies get well. There is also a priest who comes in daily to pray for them. We had him bless Aniah and i believe prayer does really help. I wonder if every hospital does this. Does anybody know?

This is the only way that l could settle my babies down when they cried.it seems the gentle touching on their tiny heads calms them down nicely and you also hold them heart.Those babies are very lucky and he would feel a tremendous amount of fulfillment

My twin girls spent 1 month in the NICU and i was there everyday but when night came i was so sad to let them there, i know theres physical Angels that God sents to love and hold this inocent babies for us 💚🥰

This was me but with my baby sister. My mom had to take two extra jobs to make enough money to afford us and I was raising my siblings for two years. Because of this I was the only one who could keep her calm. When she started talking she called me mama for the first couple of months. To this day I’m still the only one who she runs to happily.
