Band of Brothers is an acclaimed 10-part television miniseries (first aired in 2001) about World War II, co-produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. Much of the action of the mini-series centers on the exploits of Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, U.S. 101st Airborne Division and one of its early platoon leaders, Richard Winters. It is based on the book of the same name written by historian and biographer Stephen Ambrose.

England didn’t get invaded, Germany had to be in control of the air space around Britain for them to be able to do a land invasion. The Royal Air Force stopped that from happening.

Saving Private Ryan was a fictional story taking place within historical events. This is a true story. These characters are real people. And it all follows a historical course. There are things here and there that are a bit off. Otherwise, this is as accurate as you can get.

Biggest difference between this and Saving Private Ryan:
Saving Private Ryan, and Fury, were fictional stories and fictional characters in the setting of and surrounded by historical events. Band of Brothers is based of the real men of Easy company and their experiences. In fact, the men being interviewed at the beginning of each episode are the actual men being portrayed in the show. Most of what you see happening in this series actually happened.
Another thing, these men are dropping into Normandy the night BEFORE the landings on the beach.
Most of band of brothers is a lie, several people were not actually killed, I went to Ft. Benning and lots of people's photos are hanging, Spears was a legend for all infantry

Actually the story of Private Ryan was Loosely based on a true story. But it wasn't as dramatic
@@backstabingpike (Spoiler) Umm, a bit of a stretch from BoB getting the fate of a character in Ep 3 wrong (a true screw up, but based on interviews with his comrades who lost track of him) - and making some minor changes in detail to keep the narrative flowing - to "most of Band of Brothers is a lie". BTW, since you're supposedly a stickler for accuracy, it's "Speirs".
For the "letters", it was an act of mutiny that was going on. The one who was kicked out of the company was the main instigator of the whole thing and Winters strongly recommended that they don't go through with it because him and Sgt. Ranney talked to Lt. Winters about their plans for mutiny. As for the one who was busted back down to private, Ranney, he was a "co-conspirator" of the mutiny. For the sake of time in the show, he was demoted but in reality, he too was transferred out of E Co. but got transferred back a few days before the invasion. As for the rest, they kept their rank because they only followed suit and well....it's kinda hard to find over 10 NCOs to replace them RIGHT before the invasion so they got off without much punishment. That's the oversimplified version of events lol.

And that kids, is why, if you eeeever muitiny, you never put something written down that serves as evidence the higher-ups then cannot ignore, no matter how hard they might want to try (or not).
I believe the man kicked out was the ranking NCO, the one busted was next senior.
In fact, Ranney was sent to the 101st Airborne Pathfinders before pleading by letter to be accepted back into EZ company, which he did - and the Pathfinders were the unit of the "wrong Ryan" in Private Ryan. Their captain, who saves the day when the wall caves in in Neuville and there's a face-off with a whole bunch of Germans, introduces himself and his unit. Just realized/read about that last week.

You notice when they are loading the planes? Lt Winters is helping each man from his platoon up off the ground and making eye contact with them. You have a real combat leader there ♥
My favorite scene in the episode... Great leader great officer.
My winter went on to become a lt colonel by wars end he later on served as a colonel till his retirement
My favorite part of the episode as well.
The real life Captain Sobel was sticking with grief after the war and tried to kill himself with a .22 cal pistol to the temple. The shot didn't kill him it passed through his head and severed his optic nerves and blinded him. He spent the remainder of his life in a VA hospital. Many years later his son linked up with a number of the Easy Company veterans and they thanked him for his father's teaching and hard ways. It saved a lot of men in combat.
You're going to love the series. I had the great honor to meet Malarkey, Compton, Garner, and Spears back in 2006 during a mini public reunions. They are awesome

England wasn't invided by land, but they were air bombed severely (people had to go down and cram inside underground subway tunnels to escape the bombings, my grandfather among them) and it nearly got invaded had the allied not rallied to invade Europe in time, so you weren't that far off.
While I'm here... fun facts if you care to know them...
*The real Sobel was, in fact, Jewish, which is actually an important detail to know about him because it had an impact on how he acted in his role. Anti-Semitism was rampant in the 40's, not just in Europe, but in the US also. Sobel felt like he had to be extra good and work extra hard to be taken seriously. Not only did he ride his men hard and drive them up that mountain, but he prided himself on the fact that he could run up that mountain faster than anyone else. To a man, the real men of Easy Company, all agree that they hated Sobel. And to a man they all agreed that nobody could have prepared them for war better than he did.
*Currahee is a Native American word that means "Stand Alone". It was fitting for these men who were expected to drop into enemy territory completely surrounded by the enemy and cut off from the main army. Also, the documentary "We Stand Alone, Together" is fantastic.
*The court-martial that was depicted on screen was actually just one of several attempts that Sobel tried to undermine Winters. But, it would have been too much to show them all. So they focused on this one incident. But it's true that the NCO's had had enough of Sobel and tried to turn in their stripes.
*Nixon was right. The weather did clear up. The invasion could have gone as scheduled, but it would have been too difficult to un-postpone.

They hired actors who looked like the actual soldiers. David Schwimmer is almost a spitting image of Cpt. Herbert Sobel. Him, Ron Livingston (Lt. Nixon) and Scott Grimes (Pvt. Malarkey) were the most famous cast members at that time (Friends, Office Space, and ER, respectively). This series jump-started the careers of many actors you'll recognize throughout the series.
Retired Marine captain Dale Dye (who portrays regimental commander Col. Robert Sink) was the historic and military advisor for the series and put the actors through a 2 week boot camp to get them into the mindsets of their characters.
Scott Grimes went to ER a year or two later.
Malarkey looked nothing like Scott Grimes and apparently his family admitted to Scott they were pissed off when they heard he was cast because he wasn’t as good looking as their Dad/Grandad. They loved his performance in the end though

Easy Company's deployment to England was for training and the assembly point for D-Day invasion of France. England was bombed by the Germans, but never invaded.

A cool story. Camp Toccoa was torn down after the war. A local resident bought all of the wood that had been barracks, and put it in storage. They're now rebuilding this camp as a museum, and using the original wood to rebuild the barracks. History Underground has some great videos about this. Also, the top of Curahee had been covered in disgusting graffiti. History Underground also organized a clean up to clean it up as a tribute to the heroes that trained there. Interesting videos. Enjoy the rest of the series, you'll love it!
I love when Sobel failing to salute back comes back around later on in the series ''We salute the rank, not the man.''
When Cpt. Winters is helping them into the plane gets me every time. He’s Showing them respect and shaking their hands as he helps them up.
It also had to be hard on Winters, wondering which of these men he would ever see again.

He was not a good combat leader, but a lot of Easy company vets agreed that the training Sobel put them through helped make them one of the toughest units on the European front. (He was also pettier than was shown; in real life, he had Winters up for court-martial TWICE, and it was only after the second time that the higher-ups decided to move him out.)

16:43 What the sergeants did was, technically speaking, mutiny, as a soldier needs to follow the orders of their superior officer without question, regardless of order given or the character of the officer who gives that order. The punishment for this was (and, I believe, still is) execution by firing squad, so Col. Sink (head of the regiment) wasn't kidding. The sergeants thus got off lightly. Very lightly.
Out of five men who volunteered for the paratroops, four would either be washed out or rejected. These men were thus the cream of the crop.

I should have you shot is a running theme with Sink. These men would not have been put on a firing squad. They did not mutiny in theater, it came in the form of protest and resignations. They could have all ended up in Leavenworth. And there is a responsibility for a ranking NCO or an officer to raise concerns about leadership if it is needed. Did they commit mutiny? yes, technically they did, but it's how they did it that matters.
@@dirus3142 the American public would have had Sink's head on a platter if he actually had them shot, war or no war. Eddie Slovik was the only American soldier executed during by the the US military, and even that was highly controversial.

Being part of Currahee and meeting some of the members from Easy Co was one of the greatest chapters of my life. I will never forget what it meant to have both the WWII and Vietnam veterans from the 506th come to speak to us when we were officially stood back up. Some of the Vietnam guys even came back to see us off when we deployed. The sense of brotherhood was felt by all. "We Stand Alone, Together". Currahee.
This series is a must watch for all Americans, such an incredible look into the worlds darkest hours and the men who gave everything to defend the light. God bless all who serve 🇺🇸

The only disappointment I'm having lately with these reaction videos of Band of Brothers is how little many of the reviewers know about World War II. I don't believe it's their fault but it feels like it hasn't been taught. Much of the world as it is today is almost directly tied to this war. You see more of this in the first episode and it does change for the better as the subsequent reactions go on. The main thing is that BofB is not an accompanying story to Saving Private Ryan, which is not a true story. Band of Brothers is based on real people and real situations. You really couldn't write a better story.
I was taught but 15 years ago. It's hardly knowledge that comes up daily. I also don't remember all the geometry I was taught.

@@Diegesis Can you recall if you were taught more than the dates and other basic facts? I think that unless someone took an AP history class or attended a school that offered classes on World War II, you're only given a general overview of the conflict in the average US middle school/high school classroom.

@@Diegesis Sounds about right. Well, good for you. Stories from the Greatest Generation need to be passed on. There has to be more emphasis on the human aspect of that conflict, and from the individuals I've met or encountered online, there's been a surge of interest in preserving as many World War II veterans' stories as we can.
This is THE BEST mini series ever put to screen. Ever. Hands down.
This was the show that got me into WW2 history. It’s so well put together and holds you attention. You become invested in the characters, you can put yourself in their shoes as they are relatable.
"Currahee" is a Cherokee word that means, "stand alone". That's why the 506th PIR took it as their motto.

The guy at the start talking about how 4 guys in his town committed suicide had nothing to do with social pressure. Most suicides dealing with failed enlistment back then was mostly to do with men failing the initial medical, then when they were declared unfit to serve when all of they’re buddies were off to training I could imagine those left behind feeling a huge wave of guilt for not being able to enlist with they’re friends. This is the main reason American men committed suicide after the declaration of war was made on Japan and Germany. Hope this helped to put that into perspective guys. Love the content, keep it up ❤️❤️
Guilt and shame for not doing there part. Being emotionally crushed because they were told they were not good enough to defend their nation. As men have an instinct to do. They were told they were not full men. This is not toxicman bullshit, this is culturally, and instinctual ingrained in the majority of men through out the world. A man being told he is not good enough, is different than a man being told he is a cowered because he refuses to enlist.

This is my favorite mini-series of all time. I was always into the history of WW2, and this came out at the perfect time for me.
Ryan in Saving Private Ryan was in the 501st Airbourne parachute regiment. Easy Company was in the 506th parachute regiment and both were in the 101st Airbourne Division.
Easy company became world famous and you will find out why, and in the 1990's there was a book called Band Of Brothers written about them.
The Army airborne was an experiment that only had 1 year to perfect before the airborne first jump into Italy in 1943. Even then that was the 82nd airborne. Normandy would be the 101st’s first jump, one hell of a way to begin a legacy.
Then they traded in their parachutes for helicopters. You get a more kick ass sound track with them any way.
And what men the 101st had, for the division's baptism by fire!

Actually, the airborne went in first. They parachuted in several hours before the beach invasion.
Yes you have to do the Pacific, then Lone Survivor, then American Sniper, then 12 Strong, then 13 Hours, then U-571, then Only the Brave. All these selections are based on true stories and u-571 on actual events based rolled into 1 movie.
Don't forget Generation Kill
And "Das Boot"
And so many more. The problem with U-571 is the change from the real fact that it was a British operation and had nothing to do with the American forces.
Skip U-571. Oustside of the WWII setting it has nothing in common with reality. Piss poor movie.
You've got to be kidding. Saying U-571 is based on a true events is a huge exaggeration. Quite a misleading statement.

Though Captain Sobel was not a leader the men wished to follow in combat, several paratroopers have said that it was Sobel's discipline that helped the men survive during the war.
Just want to point out, as per your speculation about the missed drops of paratroopers: this series is based completely on the real thing, these are real people, this is their story (abridged and adjusted for the series). All the events you'll see ins this series are pretty historically accurate.
Everytime a new mobie reactor watches this series i always say this show must be watched in middle school/ highschool history class. We got way too many brainwashed teens out here disrespecting the flag and country

I'd say the people fought and died for the right for people to do with the flag what they want - otherwise they'd be in an authoritarian country much like Nazi Germany. The brainwashing of American kids pledging allegiance to the flag is already weird enough as it is thank you very much. Notice how all the characters in this show are white? I wonder why.....
@@wuthebest Can you elaborate on bringing up the race argument? Admittedly, as a non American I find the cult of the flag a bit weird, but it seems strange to drag racism into this conversation. All the characters were white, because that was the reality in those days. Regiments were segregated and there were no all-black Airborne units. Was it fair? No. But members of the 'coloured' units left a glorious page in the history. Look up the 'Black Panthers', 761st Tank Batallion and the most decorated unit in US Army's history that is 442nd Infantry Regiment composed almost exclusively from Japanese Americans. Are we suppose to sacrifice history and, by extension, achievements of these soldiers, on the altar of modern sensibilities?

The UK was never invaded but the air war continued after the fighter war of the Battle of Britain. The bombing, called the Blitz, devastated many English cities and the fighters were still chasing German fighters over English airspace. The best scene was Winter pulling up his troops to enter the c-47's and the launch over the channel. My father, who lived in occupied Holland and as a child saw a similar armada as Amsterdam was a major wheeling point for allied bombers against Germany. It was called the 1000 plane raid. The final scenes made me cry as we knew the fate of some of the soldiers. It was so moving.

A videogame, Medal of Honor Frontline, was my introduction to that epic speech.
"Promote the problem away" is a tactic of many big organizations. They often don't want it to be their problem, and kick it down the road to be someone else's
There is some of that kicked upstairs thing going on here, but Sobel actually was good at training so it is not entirely promoting incompetence. It's more he would not have been competent as a field commander so lets put him where he is competent ie the training school at Chilton Foliat.
If you like this, Generation Kill is another really good war series based on true events, set during the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003. By far one of my favorites. Probably one of the most accurate depictions of military life in modern war.

if you like this series, i can absolutely recommend "The Pacific" which is also from Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg and it covers the pacific theater of WWII. Also Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are currently working on a mini-series called "Masters of the Air" which covers the US 8th Air Force in Europe and is scheduled to the released next year on Apple TV. This series is so great that they literally play it on repeat at Airborne School while you're waiting to jump and even then it doesn't get old

Basically the whole deal with Sobel being a prick to Winters is that Sobel saw Winters as a threat, so when he got promoted he made him Mess officer to put him in his place and make him know it.
Sobel was a prick and a shit leader, but he was a excellent Trainer of men, and made Easy Company what it was and got them through the war.
Really enjoying the reaction vids to these fantastic war movies.
Just wanted to say, after reading all the other comments regarding the actors being at the start of their career, another important casting decision was finding actors who were identical to the actual soldiers from E Co. If you Google some of the names, you can see just how much Schwimmer looks like Sobel, Lewis like Winters, or Livingston like Nixon.
Also, in regards to comparing BoB to Fury or Saving Private Ryan; what you'll see in this series is based on what actually happened or said, with some changes for the sake of storytelling and pacing, whereas Fury and SVP were fictional accounts based or inspired by historical accounts (ie- Fury was a fictional tank and crew, but there are plenty accounts of 'last stand' crews). This series is based on actual veteran accounts and memories, so most of what you'll see is actual history, though some will not be accurate as again this is based on what the actual soldiers can remember after some 50 years or so.
After you've completed BoB, you could watch the 'sequel' series The Pacific, though many including myself find it harder to establish a connection to the characters like you do in BoB, it does tell the stories of Marine accounts in that theatre extremely well. In addition, I suggest Midway and Dunkirk. Both tackle historical events and manage to somewhat accurately tell their stories as well as keep you entertained.

You didnt learn that D-Day was launched from England while watching Big Bird? Dude....
Just a minor correction. Saving Private Ryan was based around Omaha Beach, the deadliest of all beaches on D-Day. What these guys did was mostly in support of Utah, capturing crossroads, gun emplacements and the like. It's not exact, but it could be said that since the airborne were far more successful around the Utah landings than any other beach, it was taken quicker and with far fewer casualties (easily the lowest of all beaches).

No, England was never invaded. But they faced the threat of it and there were plans to invade, but they never came to pass. They were severely bombed however, and beat the germans in the battle for air superiority, fending off any real chance for invasion.
As for the question why they were in England can answered shortly like this: In the US they trained to be soldiers and paratroopers (boot camp) but in England they trained for the actual war, specifically operation Overlord. They had many lectures about the enemy, their weaponry, the terrains they'd be fighting in, the French and English people and culture and of course combat and jump drills.
The whole compass thing and figuring out that they were to drop in Normandy is a funny detail because the level of secrecy surrounding this invasion was insane! They weren't actually allowed to bring compasses to training jumps.
I could write on and on about this operation because it's utterly fascinating but this comment is long enough.
So finally, great upload on your part. BoB is one of my absolute favorite series. It's fun "watching" it with you.
You guys are great reactors, and you will not regret starting Band of Brothers. 10 episodes of the best TV ever made. Buckle up for a crazy ride. You will cry. It's unavoidable. The talking heads at the start of each episode are the real veterans who are portrayed on the show. They only reveal their names on the 10th episode so you don't know who survives until the very end.

10:05 it’s called fragging. It was a real problem in Vietnam. Troopers would do it to get a new CO if the one they had was gonna get someone killed.
I remember when this was being made, a friend from work was in it and would be there from sunrise to sunset each day on set, aswell as doing regular work, he loved it, no matter how long the day was hard, it was the comradery of everyone, the attention to detail, it was something we never forgot.
Some of the Airbourne Veterans when they went on Holiday would have a fear of landing because they never did it in the Airbourne, only take off and jumping out of the plane.

I love this series so much because it really helps you feel the brotherhood of our greatest heroes...just ordinary men in extraordinary circumstances and what they did to overcome them. A commander like Colonel Sink knew, when his best NCO's did that, he had to do something. I believe even though others have said he only punished the most senior ones, he probably didn't punish all of them because they were his best leaders, he needed them, and they probably reinforced his own suspicions about Sobel...he wouldn't be much of a regimental commander if he didn't have any idea Sobel might be a problem... NCO's are the backbone of the military...they're the ones that get the shit done... the ones that make things happen on the battlefield... Officers usually aren't as involved but you'll find Winters was a different kind of officer...he was a mustanger (meaning he was an enlisted man first then became an officer later). NCO's are non commissioned officers (E-4 and above - a private is an E-1) and staff NCO's are E-6 and above... When winters gives each of his men a hand up when loading onto the plane that's a special moment for me because it shows his respect for each of his enlisted men... He was a true leader and gentleman in the best sense of those words...
Interesting trivia: Dale Dye, a retired Marine Corps Captain, played Colonel Sink in this show and also played the Colonel in SPR at the beginning that advises General Marshall not to send a rescue party to save Private Ryan because they'll just get killed in action (KIA). He's actually done tons of military movies and has either played officers or been a technical advisor (or both) on them... Including this show and SPR...
Part of the reason everyone misdropped was that it was pure chaos, winds pushed soldiers miles away, it was dark, pilots panicked and had the soldiers jump too early, Normandy was a logistical nightmare but they still did the job. When Operation Market Garden happened, eisenhower lined up the pilots across from the paratroopers in their planes and told them to look in their eyes because theyre the ones theyre dropping in, and to get it right this time
Today is as close to 1980 as 1980 was to the start of WWII.

Greatest WWII production made imo. I've seen this so many times. I got to meet some of the Battle of the Bulge survivors several years ago at an American Legion cookout, and it was amazing. Forget sports players and actors, these guys are so much more worth looking up to .
Funny thing about Sobel is all of the men of Easy in real credit him with making them the best and most functional unit that they became. Which is why Winters had such an easy time leading them in the field. Sobel was the perfect, hard ass instructor. Winters was the perfect combat leader
PLEASE make sure you do videos on the whole series. This show is so important to watch because it depicts some of the most exceptional soldiers that have ever existed and does an amazing job at depicting the struggles and hardships endured by these men and to an extent, the hardships endured by soldiers serving today as well as the brotherhood we all share. I have been lucky to meet many celebrities in my life time however the biggest honor I have ever had was being able to meet and shake the hand of Don Malarky (You'll learn who he is) and that meeting is a memory I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Y’all are in for a ride. I watch this whenever I am missing my brothers from my old Airborne Unit. We truly loved this series because of how close we all were, much like the men of Easy Co. I have the show memorized and still watch it whenever I’m missing the old days, or on June 5th and 6th. No better way to remember the sacrifices of our older generations than to watch shows like this, The Pacific, Fury or Saving Pvt Ryan. We love to complain about how hard of a day we had, but in comparison to these men, we have it so easy.

If I recall correctly, the two sergeants that lost their stripes were the two senior-most sergeants in the company. The top sergeant got busted down to private and transferred out. The number two just got busted to private.
I'll never get tired of seeing first viewers' reaction to Captain Sobel being, "Is that ROSS?!"
Gotta remember that property is not so silly as in the US. In Germany for example you can just... walk on a huge field, it's no big deal, you're not trespassing.
What's even crazier than the bat cluster bombs, is they were also working on GPS bombs in WWII; AKA the "Guided Pigeon System". They were an early anti-ship smart bomb that used conditioning and the power of democracy to guide them.
A pigeon was conditioned with snacks to peak at pictures of ships, then placed into the seeker of a guided bomb unit. When released over the target, it would then peak at the ship it saw which would send electric signals and steer the bomb towards it. The bombs were surprisingly effective in tests, with something like a 90% hit rate.
It was however possible for the pigeon to get confused, which is where the democracy comes in. The solution was just to put an additional 2 "seekers"(AKA pigeons) in the bomb nose, the bomb would compile/compare their pecks so they'd basically "vote" on the target and if one was wrong the other 2 would correct the bomb.
It was extremely effective, especially for the time and was so good the US military almost adopted it in the 50's. Luckily for the flying rat population however, by that time technology had progressed to the point electronics could achieve the same result and the military went that route.
As I watch this again (as well as watching band of brothers again), it's crazy to think that now only ONE MEMBER of easy company is still alive.
The kid that didn't dress out for PT was quitting the program. It was an all-volunteer outfit and if someone decided they couldn't go through with it, they'd be transferred out to the regular infantry.
Something else for perspective, in the first training "jump" (parachute out the plane), that would also be the first plane ride for most of those young men at that time. For some, it would also be their first time seeing an airplane. Lots of folks in the rural areas didn't have planes coming around until later in history.
England prevented being invaded thanks to the Royal Air Force holding off the German luftwaffe and preventing Germany from achieving the necessary air superiority needed to stage the invasion codenamed by the Germans as operation Sealion. The air battle culminated on what was called “Adler-tag” (Eagle day) when Germany staged a massive air assault and was fought off. After that day the Luftwaffe was depleted on resources and manpower, and even more so with the pressure in the east in Russia as well as the threat in Africa and allies going for the “soft underbelly” of Europa, through Italy (where Monte Cassino is which is where Guarnere lost his brother in the episode).

This is one of them.
Technology. My great grandmother grew up with steam trains, horses, and oil lamps. No airplanes, no cars, no electricity, but by the time she was middle aged she watched the moon landing on a television.

Having been on a ww2 bomber recently. The military planes of this time were not made for comfort. They were so loud on the inside that you can’t even talk to each other. Hence the hand signs and the tapping on the shoulder. You can not hear anything because of the roar of those piston engines. It is also extremely bouncy and it is hard to walk around on them because you are being tossed around so much. Remember this is probably the longest flight these soldiers as this was the 101st airbornes first time into combat. This was the second jump for the 82nd airborne. The pills they gave them was to help them cope with the extremely bumpy night flight over the English Channel. Which is known for its storms and bad weather which delayed the invasion in the first place. This was also the biggest joint operation for the Allies up to this point in WW2. You have British, American, Dutch, Free French, Norwegian, Polish, Belgian and especially Canadian, air, ground and sea forces working together at night in bad weather. We truly don’t understand something like this because it will be 80 years in 2024 since this particular event took place, while operations where going on in the Pacific and in the Soviet Union.
