    I just bought this saw for the reason you mention: rough cuts here and there. Its discounted at $85. I cant justify buying a dewalt or bosch if im using it maybe a handful times a year. I will deal with its quirks for that price.

      @HypergaugeDIY  7 лет назад +3

      $85 definitely a good deal. Nice

      That same reason I bought mine. I bought mine in 2015 (now 2019) - still running!

    Got mine about 3 months ago on there parking lot sale was marked down to $59 and got it for 50% off came to $33 no box but looked like it was never used been using it with a ton of cuts and so far so good have used a good and low priced blade from Stanley and so far have had no problems for price I would purchase for the full price and quality is not bad at all harbor freight has improved alot last 10 years and I can't complain at all

      $33! That is definitely a good deal. Even at $59 that is still a great price.

    7:48 Where you talk about "degree precision"... Next time you have to adjust that, get it adjusted exactly where you want it. Tighten the bolts. Now, one bolt at a time, remove the bolts, and put threadlock on the threads and return them. Torque them to their max. That should keep it from loosening again.

    • @HypergaugeDIY
      @HypergaugeDIY  7 лет назад +2

      I think there is either a problem of my unit or the way I used it (mainly cutting 2x4 stud), those bolts will just get lose over time. Not sure if it is the vibration or whatever reason. I just kind of live with it for now.

    • @selador11
      @selador11 7 лет назад +12

      Thats why I recommended threadlock. It will prevent the bolts from coming loose again. www.amazon.com/Permatex-24200-Medium-Strength-Threadlocker/dp/B0002UEMZ2

    I'm aware this was posted 5 years ago, though this was very helpful. I'm getting ready to start installing baseboards...need a saw. I always get there in house warranty. Even the compressor I purchased..they told me when the 2 years comes around...bring it in.. whether it has issues it not...just exchange it.

    Dust wise, you could put the hose from a shop vac where the collector bag goes, and turn it on while cutting. I am thinking of doing that with my Dewalt.

    I have the 12” double bevel and so far happy with it. I was never under the illusion that it would deliver any degree of precision tho. It’s a cheap rough cutter. If I need precise cuts for finish work or furniture I do it by hand.

    thanks for the review. the 12" just went on sale for 120$ & it looks like this held up really well...despite it's flaws lol. I never expect 100% accuracy on a stamped/snickered tool ruler or guide...always double check. you should get a table saw magnetic angle gauge. just put it on the blade & tilt. dust collector looks like a joke. thanks again

    Wow, great review, I was considering getting this but after watching your video I think I’ll go with the ryobi 10” sliding miter saw, I know the ryobi one isn’t really a top saw but compared to this Harbor freight one it’s much better. Thanks again for the review and God Bless

      Just get a good blade and check the cutting degree once a while to make sure it is still correct should be fine.

    Thanks for the review. With the cost of the Lowes Kobalt brand being $199 (blade included - 3 year warranty) instead of $109 (no blade included - 90 day warranty) I will probably go with the Lowes with the dual bevel and sturdier construction. My current Kobalt is almost 20 years old so the cost per year for the better one (even home owner use) isn't too much. I think the chances that the Kobalt is higher quality than the Harbor Freight are also pretty good.

    • @HypergaugeDIY
      @HypergaugeDIY  4 года назад +3

      Thanks for watching my video. I will say if you really like wood working and expect to build a lot, you may consider spending as much as you can afford to get a very good one. Otherwise a cheap one to start is not a bad idea. You can always sell it later and upgrade.

    Mine came right out of the box with the yellow plastic piece on the front, broken. The clear plastic shield was broken off of it's mechanism. The black channel that the blade drops into, was misaligned and could not be aligned. So I just dropped the saw right into it, letting it cut it's own slot. The clamp that is supposed to hold the work down, is useless, because the hole that it goes into, is buggered up. Once I fixed the broken parts, I just learned to live with it. (Same as with you, it was out of warranty by the time I opened the box.)

    Thank you. I decided I can live with re-alligning and needing to get good about thread-lock, as the saw I want is $600 and I was able to get a chicago used for $40, so at the $40 price point, it seemed like the right thing to do till I'm ready to spend the money on a full set of matching tools. =)

      Thanks for watching the video. There is no perfect saw out there. This is sure not a perfect one. One thing this saw surprised me is the durability. I have been very rough on it for the last few years and it is still working. The plastic on it is cheap, and I have been fixing it. ruclips.net/video/P9mget7AMIo/видео.html but the motor is good. I will post a video when the saw finally die. Stay tuned.

    I have the 10" Chicago saw about the same age as yours, but mine looks a little different. It also broke the front button early on. It also had a terrible geometry to the guard mechanism that always caught up. I have also taken apart and had to work on the contacts in the triggers switch twice because they spark hot and melt. I barely use the thing. It wouldn't have lasted a month on a real job site.

    Great review. I was concerned about how long the motor might last the first time I used it, but I'm fine with it after listening to the way yours sounded, which matched the way mine does. The extra brushes were a nice touch. Doesn't sound like you've had to use them after a year of use on the weekends, which is good.

    I was going to get the Kobalt 7 1/4 at Lowes because it was $99 and circular saw blades are cheap but the raised it back to $129 but for $84 and i got 2 10" blades craftsman for $20 at Lowes for my non sliding miter saw and the other i put on my table saw. My old one wont cut anything thicker than 6" lumber. I think for $84 and I have the new 10" blade I will go with this one. I would use it for home diy mainly.

  • @selador11

    And by the way, I bought mine at the sidewalk sale a year or more ago, at the Harbor Freight in Everett Wa. Even at sidewalk sale prices, I paid 130 dollars for it. With NO blade. And it did not have the extra brushes with it, either.

    Thanks for the pretty thorough video! So what is the particular model number of the saw you have in the video? There are AT LEAST 4 different model numbers (some of which being the 61971 and 61972) for the same overall product whereby they were produced at different factories, different times, etc and therefore leaves the door WIDE OPEN for more inconsistencies in quality materials and production techniques on one model and/or production run versus another another.

  • @Mixwell1983
    @Mixwell1983 5 лет назад +1

    I use my miter saw for 90 degree cuts and sometimes 45 degree angles. I wanted Kobalt 7 1/4 for $99 on sale but now is $129. I think for basic cuts this would be good. I am not picky and i can deal with minor problems. Thankssl for the review.
    I am not trying to be mean but I have found Asians and Indians in retail are very pick and cheap.. I have had more than one type of job and ever job I have had Asians and Indians were cheap. From a Chinese guy that came into home depot trying to lowball managers on clearance items to working for online delivery for mattresses and wanting free mattress disposal even when they didnt pay for it.. Not to mention people moving who said they'd pack everything only to try and get a room packed for free.
    Multiple jobs and similar experiences with Asians and Indians for real. They treat everything as if you're ripping them off. This dude seems legit in his review but I feel a bit nit picky.. It goes with my cheap factor and fits the demographic..
    If it sounds rascist o well.. It's not meant to be but after 20 years in customer service these are the demograhpics that bitch the most but as a review its good. If this dude says it legit i believe him.

    Lots of the plastic knobs and screws strip and break pretty easily and when the weak plastic button breaks on the end of the rotating part of the table -your screwed because this is not offered as a replacement part (at least when I tried to get mine replaced). Hopefully someone with a 3D printer will come to the rescue. I can't complain though, I still get a lot of usage out of it.

    • @HypergaugeDIY

    Thank you for this excellent, thorough review! I really appreciate that there’s a year of solid use behind it. That means so much more than all the out-of-the-box reviews. Personally, I’m looking at cannibalizing the motor to build a DIY table saw; the rest will end up in a garbage can. Since you’ve had good luck with the motor and all “the bad” is with non-motor issues, this seems like it’s probably a good choice for my purpose. (The extra set of brushes is a nice bonus, too.) A few questions for you... 1) any feel for the blade runout? 2) This video is a few years old now; are you still using this saw? If not, how/when did it fail? If so, how has it held up and what are your thoughts on it after all this time?

    • @HypergaugeDIY
      @HypergaugeDIY  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching my video. I did not notice any problem of the blade cutting or vibration during cut if that is what you are worrying. I still own and using this saw regularly. So far seems ok after that many years.🤞 The only parts that broke is the turn table latch. I posted a fix here if you are interested to check it out. ruclips.net/video/P9mget7AMIo/видео.html Have fun with your new toy. 👍

    I think that can be said about most of HF tools they are not the best and if your job depends on the quality of your tools DO NOT buy them you better spend on something better since it is an investment.
    But if you are a regular guy making repairs at home or DIY projects now and then, then you can save a lot of money using HFT.
    Chinese tools are not bad they just make em really affordable, I bet many craftsman tools are made by Chinese anyway.
