See more details about replacing your E320/W210 head unit on this forum thread: www.benzworld.o...
Documented a few things that I went through while trying to replace the stock Becker head unit / receiver with an after-market unit. I put in the Pioneer DEH-X6700BS (www.crutchfield...) but very little of this video applies to that actual unit. Most of the video is dealing with the E320 / W210 quirks.
I ordered from Crutchfield because they have everything I need (assuming I ordered correctly, which I didn't) and also great customer service to help me through the install (called three times and got a live helpful person within a minute each time).
Things you will see in this video:
    - How to determine if you have a Bose system (somewhere in one of the following: head unit display, speaker badge, VIN decode, original window sticker, badge on rear panel, amp, sub)
    - Metra 70-1786 harness
    - Scosche SLC-4 line output converter
    - How to use the Crutchfield supplied keys to pull the Becker unit
    - Description of each of the cables/connecters into the head unit
    - How to remove the sunglass compartment
    - How to remove the ashtray / cigarette lighter
    - How to use the cigarette lighter lines for ACC 12v and dimmer connection
    - Bad practices of doing electrical work with the battery still attached and tapping into plugs. This is an information video only meant to show you how to access / remove certain items. Please use discretion in working with your own electronics.
Hope it helps save someone else a few hours of their own research.

Brother you must be a speed reader. You have not stopped your word progression the whole video and have not once fumbled any of your words.
The way you speak and your emphasis to detail is absolutely awesome. I just thought i would give you a little recognition for your manner of speech. Good job friend!

Thanks Brian! I actually wasn't reading anything. I put together some bullet points that I wanted to cover and then kind of scripted it out a little and did a couple of a walk-throughs to see how it would play out. And then hit Record. Thanks for acknowledging the effort. I wanted a video that was high on useful information without a lot of the normal fluff that so many other videos seem to packed with these days. Seems like you have to watch 10 minutes of video to get the one 20 second nugget you came for. I wanted all 10 minutes to be useful info.

Matt Smith I'm sorry for the misunderstanding brother but I wasn't trying to say that you were reading off a script. I was basically saying that for a person to speak in the manner you were, that they would have to be excellent readers to process information that quickly and speak without fail. You my friend would make a great preacher.
Anyhow you have a good one and keep up the good work.
      God bless!

On my '98 E320 (without Bose), I was able to use the Metra 70-1784 and get full functionality out of it without using the cigarette lighter wiring. The 12v constant, and 12v switched were backwards on the metra harness, so I wired the Metra's yellow to my stereo's red.. then the Metra's red to my stereos yellow. Works great

Great information. I too have used Crutchfield many times and have found a few glitches with their installation kits that need tweaking. I've considered an aftermarket head unit in my 2000 E320 wagon with bose, but can't justify all the mods as shown and I am quite pleased with the factory sound system. Also my personal experiences with Scosche products has not been favorable! My car came equipped with a factory CD changer which stopped working and I was able to modify a 12 disc Pioneer changer to fit where the factory unit was located. It works very well even though it uses an FM modulator. Funny thing, the factory head unit with cassette player works excellent and is one of the best cassette players I've ever owned in a vehicle. I have lots of home audio gear including home cassette recorders, so I dusted off my cassette collection and occassionally will record some new material. To my ears the sound is so sweet I can't justify molesting my wiring system and stuffing a Scosche SLC-4 somewhere inside the dash cavity. I wish you good luck with your install. The Pioneer unit looks great and I hope it all works out favorably for you. You might want to investigate an upgraded brand for the line output converter. There are other choices with better quality.
Something of note: The factory bose speakers are 2 ohm, so the choices are very limited when upgrading. I had a Saab 9.3 a few years back and wanted to upgrade the speakers. I went with Infinity's and was not impressed. IMO Pioneer car speakers give the best bang for the buck, but you'll be hard pressed to find them in 2 ohm configuration. Again, another reason I decided not to change out the factory system. Now on my other vehicle (Dodge Ram 1500) I swapped out the factory head unit with a double din Kenwood from Crutchfield along with Pioneer speakers and I covered the metal door frame with a Dynamate type product I was able to get from Home Depot for a fraction of the cost. I had to modify the interior dash opening to accomodate the double din Kenwood and the kit supplied by Crutchfield was not a great fit. I had to shim the Crutchfield supplied housing so the head unit with fit flush along with a few other mods, but I am a retired auto tech and know my way around a vehicle's dash. I can tell you the combo of the Kenwood head unit and Pioneer speakers are one of the best systems I've ever installed (and I've done many in my lifetime. Anyway, didn't mean to hijack your thread. Good job, great info and wish you good tunes in the Benz.

Most video I watched, mentioned to tap to cigarette light to Ignition power. I replaced my friend radio to aftermarket, in the factory plug, there’s was already battery 12V and ignition 12v. I tested with multimeter. I didn’t have to tap from the cigarette lighter. His car was a coupe 2004. Only two seat.

I did my '99 C230 Kompressor using a combination of this video and one other. I did not have to buy the line out adapter. I just cut the RCA heads off and wired directly into the speaker wiring on the harness that came with the stereo. I had initially plugged the RCA wires into the jacks on the head unit but got less than 5 db of sound out of that. I also did not have to mess with tapping into the lighter. Thanks a bunch! Now I just have to find the wireless remote that came with the unit. It somehow got lost along the way!

so i have the same car but it's really a hell getting them connected... i had purchased an adapter with RCA head units and plugged them in the jack in the new unit but that didn't work, and yes the unit actually comes with a a harness but i thought that was only for the power...and i thought i need to connect that harness with the those couple of wires sticking out of the main harness adapter. Is that going to work?

Thanks. This helped me on my 2001 E430. Had everything except the ignition controlled wire. If you want to save time or not bother splicing the cigarette lighter wire you can just tie together the radio red and yellow wire to the yellow harness wire. Just remember to turn off radio when you leave.

    • @code_red7744
      @code_red7744 6 лет назад

mvernon1979 that’s not a good fix for the power(red wire). The yellow wire is always powered for memory and if you forget to turn off the radio it will run your battery dead. Just save yourself the trouble and run a power wire like he done in this video

  • @kiskiller3

i totally appreciate the effort you put into making the video. but you really should have done more research. 1h on your computer and you would have already known you had a bose system, and that you could use the rca outputs instead of the level converter, and that the ingition on power instead of taking it from the lighter plug you could have taken it from the right wire on the factory harness..

This is the exact information I was looking for. I have the Bose system in my 98 E300TD. My factory headunit crapped out and I’m looking for a cheap solution with Bluetooth. Would I be able to get by with something that has two RCA channels since they’re pre amp? I was under the impression that I could make any two channel RCA setup work with the Metra 70-1786 harness. Am I correct in thinking that?

Great video, one question though. I have a 2002 ml320 with a Bose system and after days & hours of talking with tech support at Crutchfield they said I need to bypass the amplifier for my after market stereo to work. I am not a car expert and not sure how/if I can do that, my question is does having the Scosche SLC-4 line output converter mean you dont have to bypass the amp?

How does the amp still work with the fiber optic cable disconnected? Did you disconnect the fiber optic cable from the amp? Isn't the fiber optic the power supplier for the amp? I tried the factory head unit disconnecting the fiber optic cable and sound stopped... will a new head unit without fiber optic still work? I have a 2002 C320

Hey Hey Matt, I have a 2002 E320 Wagon, and I want to replace the radio, etc...I have single din stereo too. Because I wanted to make sure the steering wheel controls worked, I looked online and ask crutchfield if they would work if i got an adapter. They implied it wouldn't.
so I went to a local shop and they said that it had "fiber optics" and it would entail a LOT of work.
Does the single din stereos in the 02's use fiber optics??

+NoahsCovers My video goes in to a fair amount of detail on how to update my 2002 E320 Wagon with a new aftermarket head unit. Your question is very open-ended and geared toward a different year. You may want to check some MB forums like BenzWorld or MBWorld for your specific year and model and see if they have any threads that can help you. That is where I got most of my info to do my upgrade for this video. Good luck!

The front two speakers on the dash (above the A/C vents) were only used for the phone system. The speakers on the rear deck should be working, though. They are VERY easy speakers to blow.. so a previous owner could have unplugged them. (I have seen this before many times). I hope that information helps you. Cheers.

Seemed like Mercedes was stingy with the bose info...
But here is your hint... if the car came with an amp. U will jeed the schoce lol thats what it is for. Rather its bose or not. A factory amp equals a (low to) no amp stereo deck. All aftermarket stereos will have amperage of its own which will blow your main relay and small fuses at some point in time. If u are reading this i am saving u money. This video was helpful to me because i just want more info on the schoce i just installed in my nb Miata. Heres to crutchfield and the orifional poster

    • @mattsmith321
      @mattsmith321  5 лет назад +2

Hi Brian. Check the video at the 11 minute mark. That shows how I used the orange wire from the head unit and put it in the gray wire slot of the cigarette lighter. That obviously just shows that turning the head lights on will cause the head unit to dim. Once I verified that I had the wire colors correct, then was the fun part of actually connecting them. I basically peeled back some of the black wrapping tape to expose the wires, peeled back an inch of cover, folded that section in half so that I had about a half inch of wire that I then twisted with the wire from the head unit, and then put a small twist cap on. It has worked out great for four years now. Hope that answers the question. Let me know if I missed what you were actually trying to ask. Good luck with it!

    • @mattsmith321
      @mattsmith321  7 лет назад

For power, at around 9:00 minutes in the video, you can see where I pulled the plug from the cigarette lighter. To connect the wires, I did the following:
      - Unwrapped some of the black wrapping tape to expose more of the wires
      - Very carefully I made a slit down each of the wires to expose an inch or so of the bare wire
      - Bend the exposed wire in half and then twist so that you have a half inch or so sticking out the side of the wire
      - Use crimp fasteners to attach a female wire fastener
      - Attach a male fastener to the harness end
      - Attach the male and female ends
      - I went this route instead of the fasteners that puncture the wire since it seemed likely to just pierce the wire and may or may not get a good connection.
For the steering controls, I wasn't finding any good options to get them working with the aftermarket stereo so I abandoned them. It would be nice to have them but I'm doing fine without them.
      Good luck!

Hi Matt, thank you for your informational post. It is very helpful. I recently did the same installation on my 2000 E320 except my head unit is a different model of Pioneer. The problem I have is that the sound isn't clear--it breaks up at high volume and the bass sounds like it breaks up too. I followed the instructions given in the SLC4 manual. Did you do anything with the ground wire on the SLC4? I'm wondering if I should find a screw to attach it to, or if I can just tap it into the ground wire.

+Nolyda Tep Glad the video helped. I do not have the SLC-4 ground wire attached to anything. I will post a picture that shows that to the forum thread listed in the video description above. A couple thoughts: 1) Did you back off the 'LINE OUT GAIN ADJUSTMENT' dials? I initially had mine maxed out but found that certain songs with really heavy bass would bottom out and get really muddy. This then kept me from being able to turn the volume up. Much better once I backed off a little bit on those adjustments. 2) What equalizer settings are you using? Again, if I went to 'hip-hop' equalizer or bumped up the bass boost, then again it was getting way to distorted and muddy. Hope that helps.

+Matt Smith Hi Matt! Sorry for the long time to respond. Thank you so much for responding and giving me help. I started off with 0 gain on the "LINE OUT GAIN" dials and then I slowly turned it up. I only had to turn it a little bit for sound to come on. I followed the instructions on that one. I left the volume at level 47 (3/4 of max volume) while the dials are at 0 then slowly turned the dials up. But once I can hear the sound, the sound already breaks up especially on base. For the equalizer, the default is "powerful" but I changed it to other settings and the bass still breaks. I'm not sure what the issue is, but I will contact crutchfield for help since I bought it from them. Thank you so much for your input!

Are the DEPO Headlights better than stock?

    • @mattsmith321

It depends on how true to OEM you want to stay. When I was upgrading my radio five years, I certainly ran across a number of people that felt it was sacrilege to put an after-market radio in to replace the original radio. There are certainly plenty of people that feel the same way about the headlights. That changing them out changes the appeal of the car. Personally, I've had several 2002 E320s since this video was published in 2015 and replacing the headlights is one of the first things I do. From an aesthetics point of view, it brings back a sharpness to look of the car that was missing with the yellowed and dull original headlights. From a functional perspective, I enjoy the lensed and crisper output of the DEPO headlights compared the the aged headlights that were on the car. Perhaps I could have spent some time to recondition my original headlights but since they are plastic they are going to end up fading again. So from my perspective, yes, I enjoy the "better" look and functionality of the new DEPO lights compared to the 15-20 year old faded original lights. Hope that helps.

@@mattsmith321 Thanks for the fast response, the look of the DEPO headlights is definetly better than OEM ! If the output is better or equal to OEM them i think it's worth it...
By the way the DEPO uses XENON Bulbs right ? Have you tried to upgrade them ?
I'm also planing to change my radio for a 1DIN with screen so i can wire a rear camera to it.

Did you ground the slc-4 converter?

Not specifically. I just connected all of the inputs and outputs as needed. I can't remember if there was a ground wire running through by default. I know that's little vague but it has been five years since I put it together.

Great Video ! One question: Is the Sound quality improved a lot by a new Radio or is it Just the same, as with the original Radio ?

Definitely improved. The new head unit drives the speakers and bass unit much more than the original. Of course, my primary motivation was getting something with Bluetooth so that I could go hands free for calls and also play music from my phone. I was limited to FM radio on the old unit.

That looks like way too much aggravation and time to listen to the radio. I’ll just keep whistling.
