The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

It’s not an easy task pulling this song off, after Shirley Bassey’s hit version, but Miss Francis does a fine job with it. She looks sensational and the set they gave her is a knockout.
Yes. When I first heard Connie sing this song on The Sullivan Show, I was just OK with it, and I think it was because of Bassey's performance of it. Bassey is over-the-top with most songs, and that's OK as I enjoy her. However, IMO, Bassey has to be seen to enjoy the songs. Over the years viewing Connie's performance of this song, I now enjoy it. She looks great, straight out of the mid-1960s. Connie has always been a charasmatic performer.

I'm a HUGE Connie fan and I agree Shirley has this one song owned. It's not Connie's style she did it once live plus she was a bit tired after rehearsals it sounds like and the orchestra distracted a lot. Connie is always hugely popular at that time and the most appearances by Ed. Shirley can own this 1 song for that movie yes bit I never even heard of her or anything else besides that song to be quite honest. The movie is what makes her popular for that song. She did it great. People are used to her version.

by 1965 Connie had transitioned and matured from a late 50s / early 60s pop singer into quite an international talent. I think MGM records missed the opportunity to lead Connie into a new direction as the 1960s moved forward. The lost opportunity began with bad decisions / lack of promotions with songs like: "My Best Friend Barbara" and "Whatever Happened To Rosemarie" (and others )that were created for her in a kind of a swinging, hip Lesley Gore style failed to catch on. I think Connie could have really taken off onto the the later 1960s pop charts alongside other American pop performers of the day had her management team worked harder.

This was a very different kind of song type for Connie to do. She only did it once live and it wasn't on any of her albums. It is just one she did for fun when asked. It's a cool one. The song is done and known for Bassey yes. I'm a huge Connie fan and it's an unusual one for her style wise. Connie sings in tons of different languages and styles. :)

I've been hearing the original sung by Shirley Bassey constantly since 'Goldfinger' is on the James Bond movie loop on Pluto-TV. Ms. Francis does a very credible performance of this song; in fact, it's a great cover of a legendary song. BUT, the Ray Bloch Orchestra trumpet section is a little distorted unfortunately. And the arrangement is almost true to the original British recording.
Right? It detracts from Connie!
She doesn’t have the ability to belt it out over the trumpets. They should have arranged it down for her, maybe more like a ballad? Nice, but not Shirley Bassey!
@@brucekuehn4031 That makes 0 sense. She is known for her perfect voice and she belts out songs all of the time live and in her amazing songs. She sounds distracted a bit and even has a voice crack. She seems tired from the rehearsals most likely. She did a great job on this song that is not her style she where did before. I don't like how people like you see one none perfect performance and then label a singer as someone who can be louder than the loud trumpets. It's ridiculous. I'm a HUGE fan who can kindly tell you that you are 100% wrong.

Connie Francis one of the all time great voices and the biggest selling solo female vocalist
of the 1960's yet she has never been elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Hall will
never have validation until she and Neil Sedaka are voted in.

@mike stambaugh - The Diamonds with David Somerville and The Crests with Johnny Maestro both had
multiple hits on the charts. Pete Ham is one of the most under rated songwriters in rock history and Badfinger could have been one of the all time greats. Of course Chubby Checker( nee Ernest Evans) started one of the most iconic dance crazes in history. The Twist is still the only song to reach #1 by the same artist in 2 seperate years. Like most Hall of Fame's either in the entertainment or sports world The R&R HOF needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

Dear Sullivan, her cover of Goldfinger was on tv recently of the full Ed Sullivan show and the intro for this was perfect on there and did not have the awkward cut out music that sounded bad at the start due to the bad cropping of the intro. Can you please redo this? Some people hated it possibly due to the first cringe we all do as it starts. The full video is much smoother.

When women sang dressed , and still looked sexy
the mic Doesn’t seem to be picking her up, or the mix favors the band. The start of song seems to fit someone with a darker tone to their voice although Miss Connie does an excellent job. Donna Loren did a good version too (on Shindig)..

The one I saw on tv has the full intro. This was cut off poorly so the first moment it plays we all cringe due to the sharp music being cropped on the tip. The music was a bit overly loud yet she kept up with it and did the vocals perfectly. She only had one small frog in her throat moment due to stress I am sure or a little cold. She nailed it. She stayed professional the whole time during some imperfections going on. The dramatic loud talking which is spoken word that Shirley does is not exactly singing. Anyone can yell and do spoken word. :)

A number of girl singers tested for the part of the theme singer. Julie Diamond, I think, and others. One of them really knocked it out of the park, but I can't recall her name. It wasn't Dame Bassey, whose rendition was great, but another, just as good, but very different.
It would be interesting to know who it was.
@@Jall234 Wish I could remember her name. The producers tested many for the character roles and for the singers, as I recall. Those screen tests were released (Bikel, et al) and the music tests as well. I heard them when they were issued a few years ago and can't find them now. If I do, I'll post them. They were all top English girl singers and one really stood out. She was in her late 20s in '63-'64 and was working clubs.

Shirley talks and yells words with drama which is fun to see but she can't sing as great as Connie and she can't do 15 different languages lol she'll never hold a candle to the Queen.. Sorry. The only song I ever hear of is Goldfinger whenever I hear of her once in a blue moon. This Connie performance wasn't perfect and she could do it way better but it's a great one. Only done one time for fun for the show.

Yes Shirley is known for the song and does it great. 1st off the original video starts the music out cut off at the start and end at bit oddly, camera angles are odd and make the video a bit funny, the orchestra distracted Connie a bit it seems and she seems a bit tired like when she does 1 voice crack. She did a great job under so many annoying circumstances. It's not her style song and she only did it once live for fun. I never heard of Shirley songs and she's nowhere else seen whenever I see Connie ruling the 50s and 60s. I think Shirley got popular for the song by everyone hearing it in the movie.
Connie is also a powerhouse, but not in Shirley's over-the-top fashion. Connie's versions of Born Free, The Impossible Dream, I Will Wait For You, Brother Can You Spare a DIme, etc., are incomparable.

Don't be ignorant. Connie did this for fun after Shirley was already in the movie. It's not Connie's style of a song. The circumstances too she had to put up with also make her amazing. The video starts out cut off and ends oddly. The orchestra is distracting, she sounds a little exhausted at once point from the rehearsals and stress of the music, the weird camera angles and etc. She only did this once for fun. Shirley isn't even ever seen during any time that Connie ruled the 50s and 60s. Shirley has 1 dark cold song. Great! 👍
Sure she did. Connie was way, way above her in record sales and distinction in the field. On this particular song, Shirley's version, as most of her recordings, are over-the-top and not in a negative way. It is her style. Connie's version is more subdued, but still powerful and done with charisma. Shirley is best heard live due to her over-the-top nature. I love both of them.
Shirley did because the ONLY song we hear is this which wasn't nominated even for an award to vote for 😆 Connie did it once for fun to most likely be kind to her for feeling sorry for it not being nominated. Can Dame do what the Queen does? Sing in 15 different languages? Can she do all kinds of genres? =)
They weren't in a competition. Covering popular songs was the norm back then. Both artist are extraordinary singers.

It's a bit unfortunate that the closest Connie Francis ever got to having a Tony Hatch was maybe Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield.
Yes. She did have Sedaka, Greenfield and Keller. Hatch did write Roundabout and Love Is Me, Love Is you for her. The latter was a popular juke box tune.

Just to clarify, I didn't say Connie has a poor singing voice. I just don't think it's the right voice for this song. Goldfinger (or probably any other Bond theme) is suited to a singer with a bit of gravel and growl in their voice. Connie's voice is pure, sharp and sweet - perfect for singing songs like Where The Boys Are, My Happiness and Everybody's Somebody's Fool (and yes, she totally owns those songs).
That's good to clarify you're option which is appreciated but in a kind way Shirley has the growl/yelling voice.. She can't actually sing like Connie. Shirley talks like spoken word and gets the attention that way by her attitude. Listen to Connie doing Born Free and The impossible dream live. She has the perfect voice tone and range for bond songs but just did this one time for fun and did a great job. She wasn't perfect that night and even had one small voice crack at the start and looked a little tired or maybe getting over a cold. The music Orchestra was very loud but she kept it high with them of course because you can hear every word she said but since it was live and could only be done once I'm sure she was nervous since a few things were not all lined up perfectly. If this is the kind of performance that is not her top list best then it's absolutely amazing of her that she only has a few points taken away for this one because it's a great performance. She only did one bad concert when she lost her voice and was on medication in the 1989 concert. It should have never been recorded or done at all. I heard her later shows which of course annoyingly aren't public well she's got her voice power back. She's been through Hell and back. She's my Queen.
