I know she makes pop music, but I don’t think Chappell ever wanted to be a pop star, I think she wanted to be a ROCK star. Her performances aren’t full of choreography with back up dancers, no intricate set designs or outfit changes. It’s just her, her band, dressed in themed outfits, simple graphics on the screens, instruments, a mic and her giving insane vocals. Everything about her from her stage presence to her online presence feels like it makes more sense when you separate her from her pop girl peers and view her from an alternative artist perspective.

Korean here.... To be honest, I think non-korean fans love K-pop because they don't get to see how toxic the industry is.... Kpop fans are toxic because the industry is toxic. I was really surprised when I first felt that it really was going global. Still wonders why so many american and european fans can be on board with the trainnee system that makes kpop kpop with your belif in freedom and individuality very inherent in your society. My friend once worked as a scouter for a Kpop company and it's basically grooming. You travel around the country to find kids even as young as 7 or 8 (it is always better to discover them young because that will reduce the risk of them making any stupid mistakes and leaving them online to stop future controversies from ever happening.) You basically lock them away from any opportunity for them to grow and learn. And the whole marketing around it here in Korea is not really about parasocial relationship between fans and artists. It's parasocial ROMANTIC relationships. The friend I'm talking about quit her job when she started to look at elementary school kids and immediately think of what kinds of plastic surgeory they would need to make them look perfect. So guys.... you should remember you don't see the whole picture. I personally think it's the same as when you buy cheap clothes from H&M or whatever, but you never think about the measures clothing companies might have taken to reduce the costs, like child lobors in the 3rd world countries because it's not visible? You really see them just look perfect, sound perfect, and dance the crazy chereographies and think Wow they are so talented and amazing? I don't think I will love seeing swiftologist talk about kpop... I know how it will go.

As a Chappell stan, I approve this message. In all seriousness, I have to say that you are one of the few commentators about pop culture that is able to be objective and fair about pop stars, but particularly here. One of the things I love the most about Chappell is her authenticity and I can’t remember if it was you or another creator who said in another video that people love the idea of their faves being authentic, but in practice tend to hate it. I agree with her stance on fame and politics and I think she should say it, and I also I agree with you that a publicist could help her say it in a way that might make it harder for her words to be misconstrued or taken out of context. I agree, and at the same time I wonder why she went for the VMAs instead of the concerts she had to cancel due to scheduling conflicts (as she put it) that had been booked for months prior.
If she wanted to be more "niche", I can only assume she'd have chosen the concerts over the VMAs. I have the feeling she recognises that opportunities such as the VMAs can bring her even more resources to put more music out / do more with her art in the future, and that there may be some "sunken cost fallacy" playing a role in there (she worked *so* hard to be where she is now, that she may feel she has to take every next big opportunity that comes her way, even if that means that it all comes with added drawbacks in the shape of becoming more and more famous, more and more known).

And you definitely did. I really hope Chappell does take a break and finds a way to navigate this while still holding boundaries. I really do respect her calling fame out for the insanity it is, but I also really want her to get a publicist and media training. For her sake. To protect her from needless and preventable backlash. Exactlyyyy! If it was a dude, no one would give a single fuck. Male pop stars, generally, *never* have to do as much work for their image and persona as the girls do, and sometimes they’re just as successful. Ed Sheeran for example can just stand up there in some jeans, a t shirt, and his guitar, and still sell millions. That’s amazing that he can still do so well with that, but female singers can never get away with that

Zachary you’re wonderful. The way you word stuff and address situations in such an elegant and respectful manner is deserving of praise. I finished the whole video and, as a wannabe artist (that does want this badly)I appreciate the way you put into perspective the quote: “you can get what you wish for but it won’t be enough”. In cases like Chappel’s, we see a person that just sees the industry as a way of making people feel seen and represented, while we have cases like Taylor’s in which fame is their whole life. I identify with Taylor more and that’s why I love this video. I think every artist that wants to live of their art should watch this video. A quote I came up with says: “the biggest performance of an artist isn’t on the stage, but off of it, when the whole world is still looking at them, waiting for them to break” and this video encapsulated that perfectly. Props to you for delivering such an objective and empathetic piece of work, as always, is a pleasure to listen to you!!

Constantly being approached for conversation can make it difficult to switch off from work mode. You find it hard to say no when approached. It's merely impossible to do it without being perceived as rude.

Chef's kiss!! 🙌🏻 Self-reflection can be truly life-changing when exercised in moderation, but as with anything else today, the moderation element is what so many are disregarding. Too much of a good thing can induce the opposite effect and end up serving as a personal blockade instead. Spending too long in a self-indulgent pitiful hole pickles the human soul. Gotta come up for fresh air and sunshine! Definitely think this applies to Chappell Roan, as well as to many others of her same generation (along with many in my generation as well, the millennials). What I don’t understand is a popular talking point in response to her not always wanting to interact in public- “the fans gave you your success and fame so be grateful!”. People act like the public picked a random woman off the street and graciously gifted her money. She EARNED it by WORKING for it. By making music and performing. That is the exchange. You buy an album, you get to listen. You buy a ticket, you get a concert. Artists ARE giving you something. Why are they expected to give up so much else for us too? She didn’t ask for you to be so obsessed with her as a person that you have to harass her in public. It’s so self-important. I understand this behavior is a normalized part of our culture and it’s difficult to just up and change, but the amount of defense I’ve seen of it makes me feel insane.

Hi Zach! I found your channel around a year ago and you've quickly become one of my favorite creators. Your smart and informed takes are so refreshing to hear. I think this video might be my favorite of yours, thank you for talking about this and adding to the conversation the parasocialism and fan culture in kpop.
Also I love your look on this video! ❤

Every time I pray for a certain video from you, you never cease to deliver it expeditiously… been a fan of yours for years and you’ve remained my #1 since

Fantastic reporting, supportive without letting empathy carry you away. And your supportive statements every time you made a comment on her behavior are necessary because so many people are just waiting to jump, either to criticize or defend. That girl really does need a rest.

Another great video! I don’t comment much on yt but I started *really* watching your content when you made the born to die video and was just struck. I just love your writing and the way you deliver it. I mostly watch documentaries about history and art, you’re basically the only youtuber I really like watching especially with how you still have your own values and beliefs despite being a taylor fan (the billionaire video was so informative and just great) given the reputation her fanbase has was very refreshing. Just wanted to say you are absolutely awesome at what you do!
