This was my first saltwater tank set up. After learning the basics and mastering a nano tank. I figured it was easier to go bigger. 2 years later I have a 45g system. Hoping to go 100+ soon!
Oh this is brilliant! It's so ironic that you're making this video now because I have been looking into starting my first salt water tank for a couple weeks, binge watch a ton of your videos, but got discouraged because everything is so expensive! Even the light alone would cost me $150.... I'm so excited to see how you set this up, which corals you use and which fish you put in. This is exactly what I needed! Thanks Aaron!
Jay Jay Thanks Jay! How many fish do you think it would hold besides a couple clowns? Like 1? Plus a crab or shrimp? I’m not too familiar with how the sump works or a skimmer so I need to do some extra research.
Thank you. As a beginner this video was very informative. I have been looking at this reef tank as a start to the hobby and look forward to watching all the other associated videos. Well done!
Got me hooked ... Making my list on Amazon of bits I need to get the Fluval Evo 13.5 up and running. Pretty lucky to have an aquarium shop just 5 minutes walk away for advice and livestock.
Spent 3 months researching nano reef tanks as ive been a purely freshwater aquarium guy for all my life in every imaginable shape and form . I was the guy that walked past the marine section without a second look , ive got no idea what changed but a nano reef it is . Im adamant i only want a nano set up because at heart im a tropical big fish guy and i dont think that will ever go but on the small side of things id like to spice it up . My problem came when looking at marine lighting ... i do a lot of planted tanks and use led floodlights (not cheap Chinese ones ) to give me the growth i want its not the price but more the diy satisfaction . With marine it seems to be you get what your given unless your prepared to mess with a heatsink and components to make your own , and im not keen on suspended/pedestal lights as i like to keep evaporation to a minimum . It seems the fluval ticks all my boxes and at the price i dont think i can go wrong . After that im pretty much set on a wave maker + controller and a 100w stick with controller ,a little uv unit and possibly a return pump upgrade down the line . I think the lights will be adequate for the few easy soft corals im looking at so no upgrade there . Cant wait to get started and your upload has come at the perfect time , looks like i'll have a side by side comparison as i take every step (maybe not the same but similar) , cant wait !! Great videos too 👌
Oh brilliant Micheal looking forward to this, I got one of these about 4/5 months ago and I upgraded the pump to give more flow didn’t know the random flow would fit thought it was to small so I’ll be ordering one of them
I have one of these fluval 13.3 systems in the states. Very nice build quality. I have a radion on it but if you stick with the basic lights, you can get 20,000K LED strips for a retrofit for like $20 each for more of a natural step up/ down for the reef.
My shop in Scunthorpe has been selling them for over 6 months got one on his counter up and running awesome little reef tank I was thinking of getting my grandchild one for Christmas
I set up one of these as a frag tank a few weeks back. Got it secondhand but cheap, added a hydra for lights(over kill but had one spare), skimmer, top off, a small wavemaker and added a dyi cheato reactor earlier today. I Have Alexa controling it all except the hydra lights.
one other item. I heard you say you will be upgrading the media basket instead of the sponge. I did this also with Intank. Make sure you plug the little hole in the wall of the chamber. It greatly increases your flow to your media. You probably know this, just making sure.
Nice video, I have this same setup. I did the media baskets in chamber 1 & 2 and upgraded the return pump to the CompactON 1000 along with the RFG. Makes great random flow! I also ended up adding a wavemaker because the detritus likes to settle in spots, but all depends on the rock scape that you have. I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with it!
Great lil tank!!!It was my first tank and added media basket and an ai prime.you might want to upgrade the return pump of your not adding a wave maker.
Eventually going to perhaps get a Fluval tank. Got nano cubes and a nano bowfront so I gotta chill.. lol ..love the smart socket. Didn't know they existed. I would think they have the here. Thanks👋
Any suggestion for alternative version, as this Fluval Evo 13.5 can't be bought in Denmark as well.... BTW, when is the followup video comming, I'm waiting :D
Been looking at a tank this size for my first saltwater tank to see how I get on. Would you still recommend this 4 years on, or is there better tanks on the market for a beginner?
What do you think about putting a mini refugium in chamber 2 ??? Ive got a tropical tank, but always wanted to go marine, this is defo gunna b tje way im gunna start , just trying to get as much info as possible before i take the plunge!!! Also to your knowledge is there a light tht will replace this one tht will fit stright on without having to remove the hood ??? , love your vids man !!!!!!
I've been wondering why nobody ever mentions using smart plugs on RUclips. I ended up switching from the individual plugs to the full strip by tplink. Close enough to a "smart aquarium"
Aaron, Great Vid mate. Im in US and have just started this tank 1 week ago. Can you link that random flow head adapter please? I've only seen $61 for a small piece of plastic on Amazon.
Looks awesome looking forward to the next on. Do you think you could do nems and clowns only in there. I might just get one and try that if it’s possible. Thanks for the video 👍🏻
You should get yourself properly set up with one mate you might actually take a tank to full maturity all you seem to be interested in is the equipment i’ve watched a shitload of your films and never once seen you successfully take a tank right the way through
so i have 4 fresh water aquariums and i have that down. i have a 75 Gallon show tank ( 48"Wx18"Dx24"H) with a built in filter set up in the back with 3 compartments where the water goes in one the left over flows to the middle compartment which have filter and bio balls and then gets sucked under neath to the 3rd and final compartment where the pump pumps it back in to the tank (Like the one in your video just bigger as you can imagine).. i want to use this for a salt water tank which i was told was made for salt water .. can i just use this tank as it is to have a good saltwater tank with live rock Anemone? or do i need a bunch of expensive gadgets to be successful ? i know i will need a better light. thanks in advance.
Had mine for 5 months with soft coral and 2 clowns and few snails and crab, coral are showing signs of growth already but I have issues with algae on the sand which clumps together! Any ideas on how to get rid of it ? Also can you purchase in tank filters in uk ? Can’t find it on amazon.
Cool tank. Although owning a 20G nano myself, small tanks are definitively not a beginner move. Skimmers will almost always suck in performance. and if they don't the returnpump will suck away the water from the skimmer in an AIO tank. With the slightest overfeeding or dosing the parameters will be out of control. I really want a bigger tank with a normal sump to make it easier on me :)
@@AaronsAquarium thank you, I never know where to measure it. I cant wait to watch your setup I have 1 in my bedroom with 2 clowns a couple bubbletip nems and a recovering bubble coral. The only mods I have made are upgrade pump to a sicce 0.5 and made a floss holder for chamber 1 to filter down through, and not go through the slots sideways into chamber 2. I binned the foam from day 1 and run biohome ultimate marine in the bottom with a heater. Great little tanks. I just wish they made a slightly better light that has a bit more control without having to manually change to blue. I believe fluval do make a timer for it though.
@@AaronsAquarium thank you. I picked one up yesterday. Looks a lot neater as well. Struggling to angle it so it moves to whole tank without hammering the birds nest in the middle of the tank though.

Awesome timing.... seriously looking into getting my 1st saltwater tank and this looks perfect. Will be following along closely!!!
So glad you are trying to keep it as stock...people love to change everything on anything..can’t wait for the updates...

You won’t regret buying this tank it’s got everything you need for a basic reef tank

Hell yeah man, I'm setting up my evo right now and this series is so useful!
Awesome!!! Great Video!! I was waiting for a video like this about the fluval evo from Aeeeeeeeges! Can’t wait for the next video 👍🏼😀

You also have an awesome Aquarium shop at your fingertips... Mine! 🤣 www.aaronsaquarium.com
You look so excited lol, really, poking forward to see how this works out, I will be watching with interest, good luck 👍
Got mine around 5 months ago and I love it. Upgrading to an AI Prime when it arrives. I got the skimmer too.
Are the lights it comes with useless? I am going from a 6 gal tank that wont grow anything.

Hydor makes a pico pump and you can attach a rotating head. Or the smallest of the new jebao wavemakers work great. InTank makes a great media basket.

😁👍🏽

Just got my tank, set it up and hopefully get the water tomorrow. As an observation my tank came with the fluval flex pump (1000 litre per hour)
I'm looking forward to this as I would love a marine tank but don't have the budget to do one but this should make it within reach for me thanks .

I highly appreciate the hey google warning 😂
I'm wanting to do this for saltwater hermit crabs and this is perfect for someone, like me, just starting out
My favorite was the fluval evo 5 but this one was also a great tank as it has an option for a protein skimmer.
Better get this new video out soon bro 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Unfortunately this tank is not available in germany :(
Are you still doing this series Aaron? I would be very interested in an Ep2

By here, do you mean the states? I've added a link to smart sockets in the description to make it easier to find some.
I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do, an aquascape or a starter reef tank. For that price, think I just made my decision.
Been looking at this to finally start a reef tank I have always wanted to do it.

That's very interesting. I would love to get a small reef tank and that size would be ideal.

I think there is a module you can buy for the stock light to alter its colour and is a timer, never bought one but I think that's what it does

Oh great timing. I'm getting this after Christmas. But how come no skimmer?
One or two clown will not produce that much protein, how ever you need to do at least 5% water change weekely..
I can second 'no skimmer'. I just run some filter floss and change it every couple of days. It's quieter and looks neater in my opinion

Great info and products. The sound in the video is rough.
Nice! You remind me of Taaj from come fly with me 😂 RUclips him!
I know this video is old but what size is the rfg and loc line?

Just tried this and the anemone never was able to accept the stock light.
Great video mate, do they do this model in a larger litre?
Hi, i see that aquarium have its own foundation.
Can you please tell me the dimensions of that foundation please ?
What kind of light is in this? Will it be enough for Zoanthids, GSP, Xenia, Nepthea, mushrooms, etc... ?

1/2 inch 😁👍🏽
fluval sell a timer that has a dimmer for day and night, you can also have a night mode where you can have the light at a low percentage.

I am interested in getting started and this tank is NO WHERE to be found and similar tanks are also out of stock. What would be a second choice?
You would want a tank of a similar size with built in filter, they are quite common so they aren’t that hard to find
Is there a link for the random flow ?
