I think that Maude Maggert is one of the most inspired interpretive artists on the planet today. She is so focused into her own stillness. She makes this song her own-no small feat as everyone who covered it, including it's composer, are hard acts to follow. But she makes me hear this with new ears and gives me shivers of truthfulness. Thank you for posting.
I saw Maude in St Louis a few years ago. I remember thinking how rare it was to hear such a beautiful voice perform songs she must have sang & heard thousands of times since her childhood... and yet she still had the glimmer in her eyes to prove that she was present, that she had brought these songs as a gift for us that night. If I were Irving Berlin I'd have been proud that someone so young was worthy enough to inspire other musicians & listeners so many years later.
Maude is an Angel with an Angelic, soulful voice. She is just not of this Earth. Words are so inadequate to describe her voice and what affect it has on me... on everyone who hears her..... So blessed to know dear Maude....
as a schooled jazz musician, having been exposed to the broad spectrum of vocalists from Bea Wain to Ella to Sarah to all - - not one has ever had the effect on me like Maude - - what cloud did she drop from up there in heaven - her voice, intonation, breath control, and sensitivity to every syllable of every word - blows me away !!!!
I remember this song from when I was a Kid. My mom was a huge Carpenters fan, and played this into the ground. Never would I have thought I'd enjoy hearing it again. Beautifully done.
Maude is singer Fiona Apple's sister. Maude sings beautiful and her melodic phrasing conveys a mood similar to a rainy early dawn fall morning in a remote romantic desolate island where there is only room for eye to eye contact within the souls of confident lovers.... quote from yours truly piano composer Franklin Branden (New York City)
..Its such a sad, puzzling perplexing reaction that Maudes music "alters my state". Your a Dear Maude. Don't be sad. If your heart must break, then let it break. But wherever you go, others will follow. Its called Love Maude. And yes. Your music does bring tears. Take care.
Just discovered her on Brent Spiner's website featured on his "Dreamland" CD/Video... and now I'm here. Simply amazing...enthralling. And once again I fall into the abyss of love.
This is the first complete song I've heard her sing. I just saw her in the Clint Eastwood film about Johnny Mercer and had to hear more. This Leon Russell song has long been a fovorite of mine and she wrings out the emotion with her wonderful voice and interpretive skill.
Gorgeous! I am a big Maggart fan, and I think she has bumped Jane Monheit from the second from the top of my list of the best women singers ever. (June Christy is still at the top. She's pure silver.) But please also listen to MM's Skylark, Deep Purple, and her wonderful flapper persona singing Room With a View. (And at the end of Deep Purple watch for the third eye salute.)
@DRUNKENRAMBLE I disagree, she's not better or worse, she's just different. Maude is very clear and strong and has a beautiful tone to her voice. Fiona has the edge, the grit, the vulnerability, the drama, and she's an absolutely genius song writer.
@DRUNKENRAMBLE Oh I don't disagree with that! Maude is exquisite and very classy and graceful. I find Fiona extremely endearing in her own way, and her reputation and raw emotion probably adds to that. They are both very talented, and very very different.

I really don't understand who would dislike this video.
Just Beautiful !!!!
beautiful song. She sings wonderfully!
Just discovered her on Brent Spiner's website featured on his "Dreamland" CD/Video... and now I'm here. Simply amazing...enthralling. And once again I fall into the abyss of love.

my goodness. she's perfect.
wow beautiful voices run in the family
I like the simplicity with which she does this song.

And Bonnie Bramlett had quite a hand in drafting the original too . .
Mind blowing.
PERFECT
i like her dress and her voice...
Daaaamn!
i was expecting her to sound as low as fiona... but this is nice too! those sisters were gifted with gorgeous tones to their voices.
Takes a classic and gives it a even slower classy sound. Fiona Apple's sister has a great voice (:

Some people have to study and practice and struggle hard to achieve this gift.

...could you not impose upon her to allow 'the song is you' to be posted? The world would be a better place.
Maude the Conqueror.
they sound a like
@dougster2810 if its what she wants...
She almost sounds like Joan Baez, the timbre and vibrato..and similar vocal expression.
so thats fiona's sister
3
Maude is good. I do like Fiona's deeper voice and her dancing better.
Oh, that sucks :(
She sounds and looks like her sister Fiona Apple!!
Lana Del Rey wishes she could do this.
