    My Daddy was born in LA (Lower Alabama), in 1924, the youngest of 13 children. His Dad died when he was 5 so everyone worked on the farm. They had to sell the mules so the boys pulled the old plows while the girls worked the reins. When World War 2 started (1939), all the older brothers joined the military and sent 80% of their pay sent to their Mother to support the family. Daddy lied about his age, at 14 he joined the Coast Guards and also sent 80% of his pay home. I still have the cast-iron irons (aka Sad Irons), from both sets of grandparents. I have always collected Ball and Mason jars. [I had an old wringer washer with flowers in a pot sitting in the washer - sitting in my bacjyard. One day it disappeared. I later saw it in a neighborhood's backyard so I called the Police. I proved it was mine, my initials and the last 4 digits of my SS# was etched on the inside of one of the legs. He was told to return it to me within 2 hours. I saw him dump it in my driveway, he had destroyed it with his Bobcat. He was ordered to replace it. It wasn't the same happy memory so I donated it to a nearby ElderCare Facility. I thought maybe some of the residents would remember the old washer or at least enjoy the flowers. I detest thieves!]

    • @heatherd.9390
      @heatherd.9390 20 дней назад +2

      That is despicable that someone would 1) steal it from your BACKyard and then 2) destroy it when caught with it and ordered to return it. I'm very sorry that happened. My grandpa had a very similar story to yours in that he was the man of the farm due to his dad dying young. He was kicked in the head by a horse while shoeing it. By the time the war came to be, my grandpa was allowed to stay home because his mother by that point was disabled so his work supported the entire family of 9 children and his mom.
      When my grandpa decided to move into town with my grandma (after my dad and uncle had grown up) he bought the land across the street from theirs on the outer-most street in the town and put up museums with all sorts of old items. Some were like the buggy and rake that Jason has bought, al the way to old reading glasses, oil lanterns, wash tubs, etc. When my grandpa moved into the town's nursing home, he sold the majority of the items he had to the town and they created their own museum YesterYears Museum in Dinsmore Saskatchewan). We were allowed to take a few items. I took a few of the antique tea cups and saucers, an oil lantern, an old cane (if only I'd known I'd need one myself by 44yo, lol) and a few ornaments and books.
      Unfortunately, my daughter and I had our neighbour's suite explode from a gas issue and we lost everything in our home. Those are the things I miss the most so I can empathize with you. Even if I go out and found a lantern like the one I had, it would be THE lantern that I had from my grandpa's collection.
      Sorry for blathering on. Have a lovely weekend!
      Heather🇨🇦

    Pretty much all of my Dad's family were farmers or what we call "country folks". My Mom was a city gal. She didn’t enjoy going into the country and visiting with my Dad's relatives. I can remember loving helping my Aunt's planting produce gardens. My uncles handled growing larger crops such as corn, potatoes, hay for cows. When I got older, when visiting these relatives, they laughed and told me stories of how as a 3-4 year old that I'd walk behind the tractor to help pick up unearthed potatoes. It was said I picked up more rocks than potatoes, but they'd never seen a happier kid with her prized "potatoes" especially when her Aunts surrounded their gardens with "potatoes". 😂 To this day I long to find a small country home and live a simplier life. My husband refuses to even look at homes in a rural area. It saddens me.. it's like I live in perpetual homesickness. This is why I so enjoy watching your farm videos.

    My daddy used a mule and a plow to farm. I remember how the soil smelled when he plowed. He would take his produce to the French Market in New Orleans. That is so true and you are right - you could still use them if they were cleaned up. My grandpa had many antiques such as these and he still loaned them out to the Town for some of their smaller planting beds, etc. They worked like charms. They did this partly because the pieces worked well and partly for the nostalgia, which I always thought was really neat. This was a town of 200+ people though, so not a big place, haha.

    Jason, when you were talking about being amazed at how old that plow is, I am amazed that I have family members that I knew very well that were born in 1885. Every time I think of that, it just blows my mind.

    I've watched my daddy use the plows many times. It was amazing. He wasn't a big man, but boy he had a green thumb.❤

    Ooooooops 😅 Y'all have certainly created a slice of absolute heaven ❤ My favorite thing about this video though? No critter goes uncuddled! Middle of a video and a goat needs a hug? Done ✔️ Donkey needs some loving? Done ✔️ ❤❤❤❤❤ Hugs from Florida ❤ Launda and Tom

    I think it is wonderful that you are rescuing these bits of farming history. Old implements teach us a lot about how our ancestors did things. We can learn from them.💖💖💖

    What a beautiful example of good balanced farming, stewardship of what God has assigned to our care (your care) regarding the chickens and your farm as a whole. This is one of the biggest reasons why I love your channel. All your animals behaviour, actions and reactions are testimony of it.

    Jason & Brooke I love the team work. Your farm is looking good with the antique equipment here and there.
    Peaches was really trucking it across the field. Track & field girl.
    Your animals are so happy and I'm happy seeing them and your ideas to come.

    Oh Jason! I am with you on Roosters! I also love the sound of Roosters crowing and I know that this is really going to sound crazy, but I also love the smell of horse manure. Both are what I think of, when I think about a “Farm “! They give me a warm nostalgic feeling. My rooster, Sir Lauren, the Beautiful will always have a home with me. He will never have to worry about a stew pot being in his future.
    Love the old Farm tools and equipment. It is the perfect decorative touch for places on your farm. I also want to say thank you for your efforts to preserve the old farm equipment, and for sharing it with all of us.
