- My latest attempt at WR.
I have been speedrunning this game for a couple of years, but this marks the first time I share one of my runs online. I must admit it's a little intimidating and I would be lying if I didn't say it was difficult playing through the game with the knowledge that every little mistake would be caught on camera.
I made a lot of small, stupid blunders across the run, most of Sapphire Passage being particularly horrid. Despite this, however, I managed to do this run deathless, which was something I have tried to accomplish for some time. This is a pretty crude attempt, and it both can and will be improved by myself and other runners of the game.
This record has been sleeping for a while. I started speedrunning this category actively two years ago when it was previously set. Since then, I've been practicing hasty play and mapping out a route that works on S-Hard. That being said, I imagine that this record will, too, be beaten at some point by someone that doesn't screw up Arabian Night lol.

It's so crazy how entire levels can be changed so much with the higher difficulty.
Yeah, no kidding. It took some getting used to in the beginning. The more difficult chest placement aside, S-Hard loves to fill rooms with spiky or otherwise dangerous enemies. At this point I've come to terms with all the stuff the game manages to cram into one room! 😂

S-Hard moves around collectibles and reduces the time available compared to the other modes, which makes it a unique experience. If you decide to play it again, I definitely recommend giving S-Hard a try. Regardless though, it's a game with great replay value, so any mode would be great!

I Absolutely ADORE the Old Wario Platformer games... i really wish Nintendo had kept making them. i love Pizza Tower as well, but it's just not the same. its more Sonic than Wario.

Love seeing one of my favorite games ever totally crushed! I've played this game many times so I really appreciate the strategy that goes into getting 100% in S-Hard mode. I could tell you knew exactly what gems, coins, and diamonds to collect and saw how you even managed your hearts so you could exit each level with just over the 10,000 required points. And on top of that, you had to nail each boss, especially Catbat and Aerodent, to avoid losing the boss chests and blowing the ability to get 100%. It's different from an Any% run in a really cool way. Amazing job.

Managing hearts is quite important in 100%, even more so on S-Hard. Mystic Lake is in that regard an especially devilish stage where this concept is taken to the extreme. Fighting Catbat and Aerodent also sucks when speedrunning, so I'm glad those fights went relatively well! 😆
I also really like 100% categories in speedrunning as they still allow you to experience the game to the fullest! 😄

One thing I like about this game is how skill-based it is. You don't really get much rng outside of the big board
I agree. That is something I love about this game too! The dice on The Big Board are actually timing based, but it is still the most annoying stage gimmick imo 😂

I would also love to this game come to the nintendo switch. so many new people would be able to enjoy and appreciate this masterpiece of a game. i’m a little disappointed we never got a WL5 with how amazing WL4 was. this is really nintendo’s biggest hidden gem.

Glad to be of help! I remember being baffled, especially as a child, at how short time you have to beat Spoiled Rotten. It wasn't before I figured I could lock the boss in place that I managed to beat it. 😄
You have to be frame perfect to beat S-Hard Spoiled Rotten without items.
This was the first game I played in my own console. Game Boy Advance was my 1st console ever and came with this game. It's so nice to see such a nice run like this, and also in S-Hard difficulty which I never reached as a little kid. It was amazing to discover a couple of new hidden places I didn't discover long time ago. GGs on the run dude!!! It was really fast and brought me so many good memories😁

I love Pizza Tower! It's an incredible love letter to the Wario Land games. I am currently playing through the game again after the Noise update launched. Having a lot of fun with the dumb gremlin. 😂

Great run! Honestly, its nice to see a speedrunner absolutely destroy the game while making mistakes that other players would make; game's got some nasty obstacles in it. Definitely more entertaining than massive glitch abuse runs for other games.
Thank you! I definitely screwed up a couple of times, like almost dying on the last hit on Diva. That was really nerve wrecking! Sometimes I forget that I play on Super Hard, but the game is quick to remind me. 😅
I've never been as big a fan of glitch runs myself, as I would rather like to showcase the game through 100% completion and in-game tricks. It makes it feel more organic, I guess. Not to dunk on the glitch runners of course. I couldn't do a zip even if my life depended on it. 😂

Really cool run! My favorite parts were definitely the crouch dodges you did to avoid cool breath transformations and that one cycle Aerodent! I had no idea Aerodent only retreated if you hit the bear, that’s a great thing to know for later. I would’ve considered him to be the absolute worst boss in the entire game on S-Hard if the attacking range was time based, now he’s only marginally the worst one lol
Thank you very much! Aerodent is such a run killer. I was really proud to one-cycle it here. It's really close between it and Diva as the most difficult boss from a speedrunning perspective imo. Catbat is also up there, seeing as you only need 1-2 misses on its head before you have to reset. 😆

i finally decided to fully p!ay thru and beat wario land 4 recently and after doing normal ive started hard mode and i already find it terrifying and i tend to get hit quite a bit; i cannot even imagine trying this
You don’t have to beat it in normal. Just beat hard with all boss chests and super hard will be unlocked.
Imagine minding your own business and a fat treasure hunter kills all your freinds, you, steals your treasure, and coins within minutes.
Yeah! Wario can be very efficient when he puts his mind to something 😂

Wario is my boy! I plan to get this game on my 3ds later in the future so I can play thru the game since I have already got wario land shake it and played thru that game dozens of times.
It makes me happy to see so many Wario fans comment on this video. I also love Shake It a lot. It's an amazing game! I use my Wii U mostly for two games: WL4 and Shake It! 😂

I have 2 questions on your run:
How did you manage to defeat Aerodent in one cycle ? (Pattern manipulation ?)
I've seen you were collecting money to aim for 10 000. Though in some levels you were just under this score. I was wondering what was the impact for the 100% ?
when you beat a level, any hearts you have gets converted to money (50 per heart.)
This is enough to break over 10000 for the gold crown.

Regarding Aerodent, it is all about timing your attack right. The cycle only ends once you bump into the bear twice. The rat's hitbox is small, which makes this hard. In theory, you only need a consistent timing to always hit the rat and thus beat the boss in one cycle. In practice however, this is rather hard! x)
Regarding the money limit, it is as Best Girl says. A surplus of health is rewarded with having to collect less actual money in each stage.

I thought that S-Hard won't let you getting more hearts. That will be Kaizo mode Wario Land style!

Yeah, S-Hard only starts you off with one heart, which is quite devilish in some stages where there are a bunch of enemies right away, like Crescent Moon Village.
Someone should totally make a kaizo hack of Wario Land 4. I'd totally play that shit! 😆

What's the methodology behind getting some coins and not others? Is there a set score you need for each level?
You are correct! The goal of each level is to reach the end with 10 000 coins. That being said, this is a speedrun, so success lies in seeking out the places with most money while sacrificing as little time as possible.
To that end, prioritising areas with larger amounts of enemies, red gems or diamonds is desired. Stronger enemies drop coins worth a 100, just like the red gems. The diamonds are worth a 1000, so they represent great time saves.
It should also be noted that each of your hearts is worth 50 coins, so if you finish a stage with full health, 8 hearts, you gain 400 coins. This means that by taking your health into account, you can plan your route on the go. In this speedrun you see me finish several stages with less than 10 000 coins. This is why.
Back to the diamonds, some diamonds are placed in convoluted places that would take too long to complete. Most puzzle rooms (the purple pipes) contain one or more diamonds, but it is usually faster to gain the required money simply by going through the stage. There are some exceptions to this, however. Both Fiery Cavern and The Curious Factory have puzzle rooms that are relatively quick to complete. Fiery Cavern is also rather tight on money, so I consider its puzzle rooms to be useful if not mandatory.
Some stages are less strict in their money output, while others, like Cavern and Factory, are quite unforgiving. Mystic Lake in the Emerald Passage is probably the stage that is the tightest on money. Here you need to combine several money-making aspects of Wario Land 4. You need to keep your health intact, kill a lot of enemies while swimming as efficiently as possible. Interestingly enough, both of the puzzle rooms in Mystic Lake are really slow, so while they could help, I consider them too slow.
I actually utilize a cool mechanic in this stage. When I kill enemies in this game, you might have noticed that they drop a coin and a red orb. The red orb fills the bar under your hearts and when filled up, you get another heart. If this bar is filled while you have full health, the enemies start dropping an additional 100-coin instead of the orb. This can help you gain the required money much faster. The ideal 100% run would utilize this trick to its fullest.

@@MahBoi100 Very good to know. I used to play this game as a kid on GBA but I didn't really understand the mechanics of it and I was pretty bad at it. The having to backtrack through a level before the timer ran out was just too much for my 10yo brain.
I'll have to get this on an emulator and start playing it again 20 years later.

why do you groundpound enemies instead of running into them?
You usually face less lag by jumping from one enemy to the other instead of punching them one by one. Some enemies have spikes in the front, such as the Spear Masks and flipped Totsumen. These enemies cannot be punched the regular way, making ground pounding a faster strategy of dealing with them, especially when encountered in groups. 😄
May i ask... Why do you kill every enemy and pick every Gem? Is that part of 100%?
One of the requirements of 100% is picking up 10 000 coins on each level. Depending on the stage, a lot of that money comes from the enemies.

In this game, each of your hearts counts as 50 coins when finishing the stage, meaning that if you have full health, you only need to finish the level with 9600 coins. 😊
