My daughter had this happen to her in high school, one day there was an empty seat in one of her classes, and that morning it was announced that the quiet yet popular athlete of the school took his life. Word got around the school that the poor guy was so pressured by his parents to be on the top, get a scholarship, etc. This happened in 2010 so it just goes to show that times change but people don't. Why do people like this have children only to mentally torture them for their own status, and even sadder is they will never admit the blame on themselves
My guess is these parents are trying desperately to finally *succeed* through their child, because they themselves couldn't please their own demanding, perfectionist parents.
The parents believe that it's too late for them to do or be what they wanted in life and so their kids are all they have. I didn't become overwhelmingly successful but my kids can. They figure if their kids don't succeed their lives are meaningless.

Buddy's mother is right, the girl's suicide is all the mother's fault. Sure the girl was disappointed losing the competition. It's the mother's job to console and cheer her up. I find mothers like that are unforgivable.
Older sisters often act like this mother. Parents should never put older siblings in control of their younger siblings. This is another form of abuse. Parents it's your job to raise your children. You should go to jail when you don't face your responsibility.
I read an article by a Chinese diplomat. Chinese schools are like boot camp. The little kids have bookbags that are so heavy they can hardly carry them. Western kids are spoiled. Medication and counseling have helped me, as have my faith in Jesus Christ, my career as a journalist, my friends, and a regimen of exercise that centers on distance running. I was mortified when the one in the front put his head back to laugh and pulled my head forward and the one behind me pulled my head back to laugh at me. The teacher saw that and spoke up.
I wish this episode could be seen by all parents who pressure their kids into winning things. The father who pressures his son concerning football. The mother who pressures her daughter about modeling or beauty contests. It's not right to do this to your kid! They may not all try to kill themselves but the pressure isn't helping them. You need to be proud of them whether they win or lose. Love them no matter what. Buddy shouldn't have felt guilty. Was she going to never compete for anything ever again? Competition is part of life. Most of the time it's fun. One has to both win and lose with the right attitude.
True. Poor Buddy, to feel all that guilt. Logically, Merilee DID kill herself because she lost that competition. But had she won, and then lost the city championship, she might have done it then. Not being allowed to lose, not getting any comfort, eventually she would have broken.
It is sad that this issue was happening back then, and still is, today...even more so. Pressure put on your child to succeed, is only one reason kids are committing suicide. Bullying is a big one, these days, and the internet. Show pride in your kids, for trying their best.
I wonder what these cookies really were. What brand. Obviously the prop department made up a bunch of boxes for this episode but I would love to know if these were commercial cookies because they looked good.
You're correct. The last time I tried to buy a box of Girl Scout cookies they were $5 a box and they were small! Keebler makes the same cookies for half the price.
I remember when this episode came out. It was such a weird coincidence because I was selling Girl Scout cookies that year and I complained to my parents that the other girls had their dads take their order forms to work. So my dad brought the order form downtown to work and got his buddies to order some cookies. In those days you didn't have the cookies with you, you took the order and the money and the council would gather the orders and a couple months later deliver the troop the correct number and types of cookies and wed then go and delivery the cookies to the customers. Well anyhow, between the time the orders were taken and the girls received the cookies to deliver, my dad died! It was horrible of course, but then when the cookies came my mom and aunt had to take the train downtown and deliver the cookies to all my dads friends from work. That was all kinds of horrible. I can't imagine what it must've been like for my grieving mother to deliver all those guys. I'm hoping maybe they had some comforting words for her.
I’m sorry you lost your dad so young and went through all that. My dad almost made it to his 93rd birthday and he still died too early for me. I was 52.

I agree. But when Buddy goes to the mother, her sadness is genuine. Whatever she did, she has still lost a child. What I would like to know is what was it lacking in her--the mother--that made her feel she had to push Merilee to the point where she did what she did?

That's a very simplistic take on it. In my graduating class of less than 400, 11 classmates committed suicide that I know of in the same town this show was filmed in. Are you going to blame all those parents? It's inaccurate and unfair. Suicide is far more complex than that.
@@pezmezsez9565 I get what you say about suicide being complex. And, btw. I had a friend who did it 30 years ago. But in this story, the way the mother was portrayed cannot dismiss her as a contributing factor. James Broderick makes the kind of points you are leaning toward, and I agree, but, on some level, the mother has to take some responsibility. Whatever, I feel for someone who has to live with this the rest of their life.
@@madonnadelrey6420 I think she took the quantum leap when she did The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia. That was the most feminine she had looked up to that point. Long story. The producers thought Kristy would leave the show because she got REALLY famous. So in one episode, we learn that Doug and Kate are godparents to Annie (an actress who previously played a neighbor, lol). Annie's family had moved to New York City a few years ago. Her parents died suddenly and she was living with an Aunt but that wasn't working out. So Doug and Kate get called into a lawyer's office and SURPRISE they are reminded of this godparent contract. The Lawrence kids are so coddled and so sheltered and so self-centered.
Kate is rocking the Julia Child look!
Too much parental pressure upon a sensitive soul. Resonates today, as well.
True. Poor Buddy, to feel all that guilt. Logically, Merilee DID kill herself because she lost that competition. But had she won, and then lost the city championship, she might have done it then. Not being allowed to lose, not getting any comfort, eventually she would have broken.
yes, youth suicide terrible rate in Japan
It is sad that this issue was happening back then, and still is, today...even more so. Pressure put on your child to succeed, is only one reason kids are committing suicide. Bullying is a big one, these days, and the internet. Show pride in your kids, for trying their best.
I love Mare. Now in AHS. ❤
Great mom!
This episode is so current it is frightning. And as an educator I urge anyone with emotional concerns to get some help asap. I care.
GREAT!!
A $1 a box! The 70's. Today it would cost $5 a box. Maybe more. And the cookies were big. Today they would be the size of a set of eyeballs!!!
Girl Scout cookies are so good, every time I have some I want samoa
@@kerriethompson2073 it's now 2024 and Girl Scout cookies are six dollars a box
Who does Audrey think she is she's not above Buddy how come we never see her working hard on anything.
She's a lot better looking and smarter too
Kristy was adorable
Those girl scout cookies were so good, I always wanted to order Samoa
I’m sorry you lost your dad so young and went through all that. My dad almost made it to his 93rd birthday and he still died too early for me. I was 52.
Reading Books sounds exciting
What's a book?
I love Willie's teeth whistle ❤️
Thank you
Great episode. I went through the same thing Buddy went through. My classmate committed suicide in 1984.
I knew a few people who suicided and I can’t believe they had no idea that they were very good and cared for.
Mariclare Costello is hardened in this episode.
Been watching Mare in the Outsider on HBO.
Another great episode with a good message but Audrey gets on my nerves.
I'll take AUDREY over piglet Annie any day .
I always loved their home. Such a beautiful house. Just imagine how much that house is worth on todays market. July 2023. A few millions i would think. California LA area i think.

I am very very sick secondary progressive MS etc etc etc...
She didn’t get there ALL by herself....her mother was TOTALLY responsible here.
What was your first clue?
What a dreadful mother to put so much pressure on her daughter that she killed herself.
I agree. But when Buddy goes to the mother, her sadness is genuine. Whatever she did,
she has still lost a child. What I would like to know is what was it lacking in her--the mother--that made her feel she had to push Merilee to the point where she did what she did?
Wendy Gillard way to ruin it for us
@@ourtravelingzoo3740 Don't blame Wedny. Many of us comment on
here, having already viewed the program. Which allows us to comment
on it. If you don't want the story ruined for you--and I get that--watch first,
comment afterward!
And, btw. I had a
friend who did it 30 years ago. But in
this story, the way the mother was portrayed cannot dismiss her as a
contributing factor. James Broderick
makes the kind of points you are
leaning toward, and I agree, but, on
some level, the mother has to take
some responsibility. Whatever, I feel
for someone who has to live with this
the rest of their life.
This was the season when Kristy started to become quite the looker. Gorgeous as hell.
MadonnaDelRey I so wanted to look like her!
Shelley I don't blame you! And she was even prettier on the show Empty Nest.
@@shelley6477 I just wanted her kitchen!!
MJs Smile Just because she's a tomboy doesn't mean she's a man. Kristy McNichol is a girl not a boy.
@@madonnadelrey6420 I think she took the quantum leap when she did The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia. That was the most feminine she had looked up to that point. That gorgeous outfit she wore on stage when she was singing, the nice tan and jewelry, she grew some hips and started having a nice figure, and whoever was doing her make-up nailed it. That's when she started to look like a beautiful woman.
🤔 It wasn’t Buddy’s fault, and who noticed that the girl’s mother was extremely harsh and demanding of her daughter who committed suicide?⁉️
ok.when Annie dropped the first box it was an accident.but to do that for her other sales was a LIE.and liars shouldnt win.
She was practicing for a career in government
Whose this Annie kid? Why is she with the Lawrence’s?
And Annie shows up like the next day.

Buddys main prob is thinking about ...competition ... I lost a dear friend to suicide ..when I was Fifteen ....I Quit school after that ......I wasnt worried bout the Girlscout cookies
I find Quinn Cummings to be the most annoying voice ive ever heard. Its funny , because i thought she was annoying in 78. A ton of years later im watching the show again. Yep. More annoying then 44 years ago ! Omg!
You sound like one of those chumps who think he/she is perfect.
The Lawrence kids are so coddled and so sheltered and so self-centered. Buddy of course puts herself in the center of a girl's suicide, rather than objectively thinking about what she saw regarding the relationship between the girl and her mother, whose fault if truly is.
Annie is a little bit of a cutthroat in this one! I am afraid to think what her character might have grown up to become .... white-collar criminal for SEC fraud, maybe?
Teens ARE self-centered though. I was, as a teenager. So were you.
Annie would be good in a movie based on Piglet from Winnie the Pooh.
Leticia??? No wonder they call her Buddy.

I suspect the dresses were the actress’s personal preference.
Why did Buddy classmate kill herself
A narcissistic pushy, arrogant parent who showed her no love but to be the best.
Because they forced her to read dopey questions on RUclips
Duck?
I'd think pizza would be in order but it's very Lawrence to want something as offputting (to me) as duck. Then again they do sit around reciting poetry..

People only like this show because they had LOUSY mothers in real life. And they try to imagine how nice it would be to have Kate as their mom and live in that beautiful house. Get over it. And try to imagine that you had a pet piglet named Quimm Cummings. Oink Oink !!
Katie was my mother in law and was awesome at it
Why are you here if you don't like the show? I will also have you know that QUINN Cummings was fabulous opposite Richard Dreyfuss in "The Goodbye Girl".
Wait in part one no one died
They Never really treat Quinn Cummings like part of their family. They just don't warm up to her like they do to the other kids.
I've said this all along. Kate is particularly cold. She just looks at her and pretty much says "good bye" and walks off awkwardly in scene after scene.
She was a bastid from a basket
Annie talks and acts like a robot so often, they're probably confused about whether she's human or not.
Sorry but i don't like annie...the show just doesn't need her.
She's a little piglet.
