Thank you for this breakdown of your techniques. I’m going to have to buckle down and learn a DAW.

"Whatever you choose to use it's a case of learning how to use it properly." There is a universal truth here. It's often not the cost of the thing we own but the hours we are prepared to put into it so that it works for us and we explore all of its abilities and learn to work around its shortcomings. Then we are a master.
You covered so much here. Everything from ground loops to not annoying the neighbours. Love the Q and A, will this be a new feature?
Gavin your videos are so well thought out and well produced and informative and entertaining. Marcus is a subscribe for sure. Your students are so lucky.
Every time I watch someone pick up a guitar I wish I had listened a tiny bit less at school and spent more time following my dreams.

You’ve hit the nail on the head, time spent learning to use something properly beats having every option possible.
Thank you very much, I’m so glad you found this one interesting.
I would love to include the Q and A element in my videos if I can get enough questions between RUclips and Instagram for the videos. I would definitely be interested in keeping that going if viewers like yourself were enjoying it.
Yeah Marcus has a great channel- some awesome gear demos!
Thank you that’s all very kind of you to say. I feel like that watching your channel, always enjoyed the technical side and think your explanations are great!
Thanks again for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it!
      Many thanks
      Gavin

This is excellent!! Thanks so much for the detailed survey. It's cleared up some confusion I've had on several issues, particularly groung hum.

I recommend trying out the lite version if you do, limited to 8 tracks but full use unlike some other lite versions.
Thanks, I was fortunate to have a lot of questions for this one over on Instagram, more than was featured- but have something special planned for some of the others...
thank you Jack, I really appreciate that and of course thank you for watching and commenting!
      Thanks again

Great vid Gavin, very informative and I have a lot to think about so please don't mind if I come back with questions later on. However my first question is what is that black band wrapped around the neck at the headstock of your bass? What is its purpose? Thanks.

Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it. That’s no problem at all, please do ask any questions that come up, I love getting questions.
That’s a good question, that is called a fretwrap and is made by Gruvgear.
It basically acts as a string mute. Now this is in no way a replacement for developing a good left hand muting technique, that is essential to becoming a good bass player.
But this helps for unusual techniques like tapping, to reduce string noise and additional ringing and overtones. Victor Wooten also uses one for this reason.
And when recording that can be a massive help for keeping the track as clean as possible.
Some bassists don’t like them, and I totally agree that they should never be viewed as a replacement for developing good muting techniques. And for that reason you don’t see me actually use it that much (sitting behind the nut, it is not in use) but for unusual things like tapping on weird sound effects using pedals, it can be very useful.
I hope that helps. Thanks again for watching and commenting.
      Many thanks
      Gavin

Thanks again Gav bit heavier this week 🤷‍♀️ but good advice. I think the last time I looped a ground sheet was in a tent, huh talk about your fading.... Remember FL Studio is a decent DAW that does include updates for life and you can get a free download trial that slots into a purchased version when you can afford one. One thing, do you have the bass - pedal effects etc all going when you record into your daw, or do you record each sound as a separate channel and then use the daw to mix together?

    • @gavinforbesmusic5164
      @gavinforbesmusic5164  3 года назад

Thanks for watching, appreciate it! Yeah was good branching out into a style of bass playing I don’t regularly do, nice challenge and Marcus was a pleasure to work with.
Haha this talk of tents gives me flashbacks to camping... never again 😂
Yeah well said, FL studio is definitely a great DAW and a serious contender for those looking to get into music production.
That’s a good question, and the answer varies depending on the song.
Typically I chain pedals together so that it creates a more interesting sound than each individually but running two signal paths with different effects on each can produce a different sound so both work really well.
I also some times take the bass track I record and duplicate it on the DAW and put effect plug ins on each to change the sound even more.
Usually though it’s a minimum of a clean bass and my pedals in a chain on another one. But that sometimes becomes clean and multiple parallel signals of effects...it’s a bit of a rabbit hole I go down regularly 😂
Thanks again for watching and the comments.
      Many thanks
      Gavin

What if you do have a heavy fuzz/distortion/modulation sound straight into the interface, (and can’t record from speaker) does it need some eq? Or compression?

    • @gavinforbesmusic5164
      @gavinforbesmusic5164  3 года назад

That’s a good question. For that, the most common solution is to use a cab sim plug in or an IR (impulse response) which is like a reproduction of a speaker in software. That would be the closest sound to what your speaker does and can get those plug ins very affordably from some manufacturers.
You can also get them as a hardware pedal/box but those come with a higher price tag.
I personally don’t use those options very often though. I tend to shape my sound in a way from my preamp/DI that means I get a fuzz/distortion sounding the way that I like.
I also do also sometimes use eq like you suggest to shape the sound and tame the nasty high end when I need to.
Compression to level peaks is also a very good idea at times.
But ultimately whatever gives you the time you like is a good solution. There are some very unusual sounds on big songs from people just trying things so there’s definitely no right or wrong- just whatever works best for you and the song.
Thank you for watching, I really appreciate it and hope you enjoyed the video. I hope this answer helps.
      Many thanks
      Gavin
