    I relocated to the Philippines alone in 2018 at the age of 55. I was not financially well off or anything then, I just realized “despite working my entire life,” I wasn’t ever getting ahead. In short, I was fed up trying to get ahead and simply wanted to move somewhere a lot more affordable so I would be able to retire comfortably there at 62.
    I’m always thinking and planning way ahead, so it’s not a big surprise that I did what I did when I did it.
    The biggest thing that was standing in my way back then was fear. I have a saying though that helps me get past my fears. It’s: Fear is a caution sign, not a stop sign. I am rather fearless in that I’m not the type to let my fears stop me.
    I’m 61 now, super comfy here and coasting through life in the Philippines, looking forward to retirement income to start at the end of this year which will greatly improve my quality of life.
    My move here in 2018 wasn’t a flawless relocation, I did make some serious mistakes. The biggest one being not first (before moving) securing an online job (preferably with a company outside my home and destination countries (for tax advantages)). Not being financially independent, I wasn’t going to be able to survive without income. It’s important for one to smartly plan ahead and be able to meet their financial needs especially if planning to live overseas. I eventually found work working for a Chinese company via online.
    Another mistake I made was not to do much research concerning the various laws regarding permanent residency. Luckily, that wasn’t a problem here, as the Philippines is an easy place to live permanently on a simple tourist visa. There are no ridiculous hoops to jump through or unreasonable restrictions, like there ARE in most all other countries.
    Indeed, the cultural differences of a foreign country can be off putting and difficult to adapt to, especially if living within the general population, which I do. Once I finished adapting to everything here, which took about a year, I had to weigh the entire experience of living here with living in my home country to determine which one was in fact the better choice. I also realized that it didn’t make much sense to pinpoint and complain about something I didn’t like here when I could be complaining about a long list of things back home. There is always going to be a trade off, and I feel - all things considered - I made a really good decision by moving here. It is the best country for me and my individual situation.
    Living here is ten times better than living in my home country. Not to mention ten times cheaper.
    I agree with you about researching and trying out a potential new country first before moving there. It’s SO important. The biggest reason being, we are all different and like and hate different things. As for moving to the Philippines, I visited here 5 times before moving and had a fairly good idea of what to expect.
    After living here a few years, I seriously considered moving to Phnom Penh Cambodia, as there were so many wonderful RUclips videos and information about it online. But on my first day there, I was so turned off by everything I was seeing and experiencing, I immediately booked a flight back to the Philippines.
    Was there something wrong with Phnom Penh? Maybe, maybe not, all I can say for sure is that the shoe didn’t fit. And I had no way of knowing that until I went there and tried the shoe on.

      Het kan inderdaad een uitdaging zijn om nu al de overstap te maken, vooral met werk en andere verplichtingen. Misschien kun je kijken naar mogelijkheden om je plannen stap voor stap te realiseren, zoals een langere vakantie of tijdelijke verhuizing om te zien hoe het bevalt. En je hebt gelijk: het leven is onzeker en het is belangrijk om te genieten van het moment en je dromen na te jagen.
      Ik wens je veel succes en hoop dat je binnenkort kunt genieten van de zon en de rust in Spanje! 🌞

    Yes, but it does actually get quite cold in winter in Spain too and many properties have poor insulation and little or no heating so it´s important to be aware of that.

    • @evaellenjoan
      @evaellenjoan  Месяц назад +1

      Hi LaChica, thank you for sharing that insight! In my area, winters aren't quite cold, and I made sure to build my house with thick 30 cm thermo block walls that keep out the cold in winter and the heat in summer. It's been a great decision to maintain comfort throughout the year! 💥

    • @LaChicaconSuerte-1111
      @LaChicaconSuerte-1111 Месяц назад +1

      @@evaellenjoan That was very smart of you. I lived in Mallorca for six years and also visited Alicante a couple of times last year. If you have a modern and well-constructed property with proper insulation, then you´re okay, but unfortunately, many older properties (and even some new ones) in Spain are cheap constructions that have little or no insulation. In addition, electricity is not cheap in Spain and in such properties, the heat just does not stay in, no matter how much you turn it up. It´s only in recent years that construction companies are having to meet EU regulations for construction of new apartments etc. Also, it is good if you have airconditioning as well as heating installed. I rented an apartment in Alicante in March last year and when we arrived, it was absolutely freezing as the heating had been kept off and it took a good six hours to warm up. Also, the rooms that did not have heaters stayed cold. It may come as a surprise to many, but in Mallorca, every year, people literally sit in their flats with heavy blankets around them that they keep wearing as they move from room to room as it is that cold. Many people end up in hospital due to pneumonia. These are things people who come to the island on vacation in summer cannot imagine. It´s all due to the poor constructions and the fact that in winter, the temperature indoors can be 5 degrees lower than outdoors! The flats become like fridges and there is very high humidty as well, to the point that you can see condensation dripping from internal walls and cupboards. This starts in November and goes on into March. December and January, there can be big storms, and again, due to the poor constructions, there are often gaps around windows, in ceilings, below sliding doors to patio/balcony/terrace and water comes in! Then you get black mold growing indoors. It might sound impossible, but unfortunately, all of this is true.

      @@LaChicaconSuerte-1111Thank you for sharing your insights. It's eye-opening to hear about your challenges of living in Spain, especially regarding the issues with older properties lacking proper insulation. Your experience highlights the importance of modern construction standards and the impact on comfort during colder months.
      I do not have airconditioning nor central heating in the house, I only have a wood stove and a small gas stove. The doors of my house are always open for the rescue animals, so 😅. And yes, I build my house my way with big thermo blocks.
