0:46 Fun fact, that is Ian McShane doing the opening narration in the beginning. He actually had to call his grandson, who is a fan, to ask what One Piece was about. He took the job because his grandson went nuts when they asked him to be the narrator.
That’s a great story! 😀 and knew we recognized that voice just couldn’t place it 😝
There are five things you should know about Luffy:
1. He’s always hungry.
2. He’s an absolute moron.
3. He’s stretchy.
4. He looks after his friends.
5. Come hell or high water, he will not stop until he is King of the Pirates.
Also flirting and womanly charms have no effect on him.
@@YukoValisHe's a child tbf 😅
6. Older women all fall for him 😂😂 (except Nakama)

For some perspective, One Piece was the best selling manga every year from 2000 to 2018, except in 2005 and 2006. So yeah, there is an audience for it. It's not rare to see someome jumping in completely blind and then absolutely loving it
As of 2023, One Piece is the best selling comic of all time, beating out Peanuts and Asterix. So yeah, it’s popular.
I started One Piece with the LA.
It may take you a couple shows to love it, but...I know I got HOOOOOKED
Not every year, some, bleach and Naruto was best selling in those to
@@bendoucet8641best selling manga not comic
@@bendoucet8641 Currently officially only second best selling comic because it has to overcome the hurdle of Superman first - which was written by very different authors over a way longer period of time and had dedicated single chapter volumes. If anthologies would count One Piece would be easily number 1 because you would have to add the sales of the Shonen Jump magazine in Japan which has other manga as well but also the newest One Piece chapters.
There is a reason one piece is basically the most popular franchise in japan for a long time. And it helps that the director involved in the show is a big one piece fan and had to have approval from oda to get any scene approved.
Glad the creator was so heavily involved 😊
didnt oda also chose the actors?
@@L-W-ko1hn Yes
Zoro's actor is the son of famous Japanese martial artist and actor Sonny Chiba (whom you might remember as Hattori Hanzo in Kill Bill Vol. I)
Oh nice! No wonder he is so damn good 😀
fun fact about the actor playing Luffy. the creator of One piece himself said that looking at him was as if Luffy had actually come to life outside of the manga.
So, fun fact: once upon a time it was considered bad luck to have a sailor who could swim, because if the ship was in a dangerous situation they could just abandon it instead of giving their all to defend it.
That’s a cool fact 😀😎
I loved how the actor who did monkey D luffy was suprisingly being dumb, sweet yet ruthless and clever when needs to be was done nicely for a live version
Yeah he really nailed the nuances of the character 😀
The actor who played Zoro, Mackenyu, was so charismatic and wow!! I love him ❤️
Agreed 🤩😍
I'm so thrilled you two are watching the One Piece LA. I also watched this as someone who knew nearly nothing about the Anime/manga and it has quickly become one of my favorite shows. Its so nice seeing others who are experiencing this for the first time because all of my friends watch the anime.
Yes, they use snails as a phone. That is a thing.
It make sense in a way too you know lol considering that world is mostly water... snails is the most waterproof phone system out there if you consider ...
😎👍🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Those snails, also called Den Den Mushi, or Transponder Snails, are special snails that has phychic abilities and can communicate with each other over vast distances. The Humans of the world utilizes this as a form of telecommunication. And the snails don't mind cuz they get fed and taken care of.
Funnily enough, they are terrain snails. So they shrivel up in salt water... @davidho1470
@@ricorichardson5945 are you trying to overload the reactor with information... they not even at that part yet.
The actors were all expertly cast and even Oda himself, having final say on it, chose right. Iñaki Godoy is Luffy in real life as far as everyone is concerned and I hope season 2 comes soon
Nah, they did Benn Beckman dirty, he's young and built like Shanks, just as much badass really but the LA decided to have an actor that gives Benn Beckman the impression of someone old and not built, he don't look important character at all in the LA. That's a shame.
@@alvdansen7172 Fair enough, hyperbole aside, most of the cast was great
@@alvdansen7172lol, I’m pretty sure if we get far enough to see him do anything important he’ll be recast.
@@alvdansen7172 Do you understand pirates aren't as physique and handsome as you think they are from the anime. Real pirates or stereotypical pirates are gritty and greedy looking. Especially the Red Hair pirates who are one of the most stereotypical pirate crews in the franchise. Which is something the OPLA is going for and it should stay that way. Making every notable strong character look physique and handsome doesn't fit right in a Live Action show based around pirates. It fits well in the manga/anime because of it's art style and the Shonen demographic.
@@Liqhtmare I dont care about that, Im talking about One Piece!! Benn Beckman got done dirty.

Currently, One Piece---as a comic---is the 2nd best-selling in the world. A few years back it beat Batman and has been closing in on Superman ever since.
The Live Action has been SUPER helpful for the series. Although I'm not going to get into it here, One Piece has had a rough reputation in the West because of a really rough beginning that turned into a slow recovery. Such a spectacular project with so many devoted fans on the team has been great for reintroductions as well as new first impressions.
Eiichiro Oda, the author for ~26 years *straight* (remember that there were huge pauses between Dragon Ball Z, GT, & Super) was very hands-on with the production. Cooperative with the writing team who made changes to shorten the first few arcs into 8 episodes, and almost magic with choosing the perfect actors for every role. And I do mean EVERY role. There's a lot of behind the scenes with the longtime voice actors meeting with the live action actors and them connecting over the characters.
Although I may come back with more specific recommendations when you finish, there is a remake anime in the works. It might be something to look forward to if you don't want to commit to 1100 episodes (as of this post). Happy sailing!
Looking forward to hearing about the remake and if they can condense the anime then that is for sure something we’d want to check out 😅
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 It will condense the anime for sure, but's it's not going to do any miracle. Even condensed, One Piece will still be around 600 episodes instead of 1100 at best.
@@Arkayjiya It definitely will not be 600 episodes (way less). Regardless it's being animated by probably the best studio in the industry (alongside modern-day Mappa) and will be 100x better than the slog of a pace the current anime is airing out.
@@kappachino335 You're dreaming if you think it will last less than 600 episodes (unless it's cancelled of course).
DBZ Kai only divided the amount of episode by 1.8. There are currently 1101 One Piece episode, at that same rate that's 590 in the "kai" version.
But even if they go even faster than DB Kai (which is gonna be hard because One Piece has ten times more dialogue than DBZ, and you can't really cut that), remember that the OP anime is far from over. We've got two big arcs left in the manga, that's like 200 chapters at least, so 250 anime episodes at least (probably closer to 300), so the final episode count will be something like 1400, which means that to get to 600 for the new anime, you'd need to go 2.33 times faster.
They're not gonna go any faster than that, not with a manga as dense as One Piece. This isn't Chainsaw Man where chapters are short and often have little dialogue so you can adapt 3.5 chapter per episode, that's impossible to do for One Piece.
They can't even do what they did with Death Note which had tons of dialogue, but a lot of it was tense reaction face with no action going around and characters talking at the speed of light (pun intended). One Piece has everything, a lot of dialogue, ton of set pieces, a lot of action, even with good pacing this is easily 600 episodes.
@@Arkayjiya bro id be surprised if they did the entire series dont think they will but if they do they are going to cut a lot it for sure wont be 600 episodes they did the entire east blue almost in 8 believe me your dreaming if you think they are going to do that.
I'm a HUGE One Piece fan, and I like this adaptation.. it may not get people to read or watch the full show, but it does a great job for what it is.
I've seen it get folks interested 👀

• Monkey D. Luffy - 17 years old - Captain of the Strawhat Pirates who ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit. Which turned his body into rubber.
• Roronoa Zoro - 19 years old - Second Mate of the Strawhat Pirates who mastered Three-Sword Style.
• Nami - 18 years old - Navigator of the Strawhat Pirates who is a expert in Meteorology.
You're almost right, lol. Or rather, I think it's notable to mention that Zoro didn't just master the Three-Sword Style, he CREATED it (and, the argument could easily made that he hasn't yet mastered it at this point, that it's still a work-in-progress). And Nami is at this point a thief and a Cartographer. Meteorology -- or predicting weather patterns -- is something she's naturally talented at, but doesn't actually study until much, much later. If my memory serves, then at this point it isn't something she's even aware herself that she's talented at, just something she does.
I think it's more fitting to say that Zoro is the first mate of Luffy.
@@MorenaEvensong She's naturally talented at predicting slight weather shifts, feeling changes in barametric pressure, etc. But she has also studied basic meterology as it relates to navigation (she does study it more in-depth, later). There are points in early episodes when Nami explains the workings on weather phenomena and we have other characters point out that only someone who has studied weather would understand how X or Y works.
Super excited to see you react to this! I started watching you when you did overwatch reactions. Never thought I’d get to see you watch one piece! I’ve read the one piece manga since about 2005 I think. So for 19 years. Still reading. This first season of the live action covers about the first 10 manga volumes. First chapter came out 1997 and latest chapter released is chapter 1111 actually. The latest volume released was 108. It’s still absolutely amazing and the story is nearing its end.
Really happy to see you enjoy it and hope you become one piece fans 😊
Oda the manga author was the casting director for the main characters and oversaw the whole production with veto on everything. Which explains why the adaption is so good. For a start they are going to stay as close to the source material as they can and the director is a big One piece fan as well!
I can't wait for next season where they meet Tony Tony Chopper and maybe Frankie!
Oh man this show is amazing, i hope you enjoy it enough to want to continue watching the anime because trust me this world and this lore go DEEP, much much deeper than it’s initial premise of “haha funny pirate trying to find big treasure”
We can imagine. First episode alone gives us vibe that it’s much more than just funny pirate looking for treasure 😅🤩
Btw, they gonna start filming second season this summer, and will finish it by the next fall, most likely...
Aw man… I was hoping to be cast as Mr 9😩! Really looking forward to Season 2 tho🤩!!!
Nice 😁
According to numbers, One Piece sold at approximately 523.2 million around the World, which makes it the best-selling comic book series of all time far before iconic titles such as Asterix, the Peanuts, Batman, Lucky Luke, Tintin, Garfield, Casper or Dragon Ball. So no, it's not as niche as you think it is. But it's okay, we still love you❤
You're finally one of us now.
Did it surpass superman sales...it's gonna happen but last I checked it was still in second behind superman comics

So glad you’re reacting to this! Such an amazing adaptation. Yes Zorro has the swords and the strength haha. Training can do a lot for people in this world.
FINALLY! I'm so happy you guys are checking this out because One Piece is a really special series and this is one of thee best adaptions of an anime. It also helps when the showrunners are fans of the source material and have a clear vision for what they want. *cough cough* airbender *cough cough*
But you can really feel the love and passion behind this show from the attention to detail, set design, casting. All of it.
Fan Fact: Nami’s actor Emily Rudd is also voices the character of Marcille in the anime Delicious in Dungeon. She’s easily the best part of that show, which is really saying something because that show is great!
Mackenyu is the son of Sonny Chiba which was a huge Japanese/ American which Sonny Chiba was in Kill Bill. The marine actor you see with Gold Roger was in the movie 300 and Clash of the Titans.
Finally been wanting one piece content for a while😁
3:10 Yes, Red-Haired Shanks.
And you'll want to remember that name.......
She's a pretty minor character but I love what they did with Alveda here. In the manga she's like this thousand pound giant beast who looks as repulsive as she acts, and here she's heavy but also very beautiful, and her utterly repulsive nature is *soley* conveyed through her brutal and petty behavior, which honestly works a lot better.
In the english dub, Luffy has the same VA as Kid Gohan (Z Kai), and Zoro has Vegeta and Piccolo.
Same with Usopp & Krillin as well as Sanji & Trunks.
Zoro having a Vegeta connection and us instantly loving Zoro makes sense now 😜😁
Luffy's Japanese VA is Krillin.
2:15 N'ah, he's just snoring. He's a very deep sleeper and picks odd moments to take naps.
As a MASSIVE fan of One Piece, it makes me super happy that you guys are starting this series. While I do prefer the original, I think the live action is a great adaptation. If you two enjoy this adaptation enough, maybe consider reacting to the original anime. 1000+ episodes may sound daunting, but it’s worth it.

The One Piece Live Action is one of the, if not the, best Live Action adaptations. The success blew away every expectations people had, good and bad.
When it came out, people were saying it broke the curse of Live Action adaptations that has been bad for decades.
I can't wait to watch your journey through this show you will have a great time.
Yo, nice!! I'm glad you guys are checking OP out :D
From Cowboy Bebop to One Piece...talk about valleys and peaks.
Of all the people who have reacted to this, you're the first I've seen who Immediately knew that Nami was after the uniform. Well done!
2:05 The world of One Piece is roughly the size of our sun rather than our earth. It's also covered by a lot more water than ours is. So yeah....bad luck for those who can't swim......but as you'll see, they get by.
The guy who casted the main roles is actually the guy who writes the manga
You guys are so delightful 😊
One of the requirements for the rights to do the show was that the author of the manga had final say on the casting of the main cast. The rest of the casting is absolutely insane, but Luffy's crew were each hand chosen by the author.
17:31 have no fear this show will go on and y’all’s reactions to it will get massive views. I recently started watching the anime and I’m only on season 2 like a 100+ episodes in, theres well over 1000 episodes in the series. So to see what they’ve done with Live Action while some of the stuff was condensed and switched around for the live action to keep it flowing more cohesively. I’d say from what I’ve seen that new and old fans alike will have nothing but good things to say about this series for years to come.
Morgan said that it's a week in the yard for attacking a Marine, what they didn't say was that he was being charged for attacking four or five Marines which means four to five weeks in the yard.
There's no guarantee that they would have given them water either with how tyrannical Axehand Morgan was.
3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food, only by sheer willpower with Zoro have survived which is why the spoiled son was so sure he was going to die.
To focus in on Zoro, his actor, Mackenyu, is a legitimate trained swordsman from childhood. An entire family legacy, if I recall correctly.
Don't know if it was mentioned already but Zoro hates chocolate so him eating the chocolate flavored rice balls that were knocked on the ground shows how kind he is.
YES, you actually doing this, finally!
Guys, you ain’t seen nothing yet. The writing, acting, world building and the story is a true masterpiece. It’s on par with Tolkien and Harry Potter and better. One Piece is one of the most read and watched Manga/Anime of all time for a reason. oh and btw, bring tissues for the later episodes

I like your réaction so much spécialy the guy + yup mackenyu the one who acted zoro is suuuper handsom ❤
As someone who has watched (Both Dub & Sub) and read the entire story. This is a great reinactment. While not completely accurate as you would expect. I was like I'm revisiting my favourite Shounen as modern interpretation. Plus, with the familiar enough energy of the anime, combined with 'Pirates of The Caribbean' like vibe. It's feels unique as well.
You prolly know this (?) but the creator of One Piece was a huge fan of Dragon Ball growing up, so there's a lotta general inspiration taken from it ^^ (It's also inspired by a show called Vicky the Viking, but I feel you prolly don't know it)
In the Japanese dub of the L.A. they actually got most of the anime voice actors to reprise their roles for the characters- some of them share VAs with Dragon Ball characters too (most famously Luffy is Krillin, Zoro is Piccolo, and Buggy is Pilaf)
While I'm not a dragon ball fan, that must feel so cool as the creator to grow up as a fan of something and then have those people voice act for YOUR story.
More than just a fan of it. He and the mangaka of Naruto both worked on Dragonball as assistants when they were first starting out in manga. They were both really close with Akira Toriyama (mangaka for Dragonball) and were both hit really hard when he died recently. Oda has said in interviews that Goku was a huge inspiration in how he wrote Luffy as a character.
@@TheSwampianOda and Kishimoto were never assistants for Akira Toriyama. Oda was an assistant for the Rurouni Kenshin manga.
Zoro's English dub actor, Christopher Sabat, plays Piccolo, but Piccolo's Japanese actor, Toshio Furukawa, plays Ace. Zoro's Japanese actor, Kazuya Nakai, does play Tagoma in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F and Dragon Ball Super
Matt Owens executive producer of this adaptation said...

As of now there are currently 1112 manga chapters and 1100 anime episodes....the author of One Piece Eiichiro Oda said that he plan to finish the manga within a few more years. The anime has been airing since 1999 but the manga has been around since 1997. I think you should react to the breathtaking world of One Piece by Strawhat V to get a point of view of the anime.

As someone who has only seen about 90 episodes on the anime and doesn’t plan to continue, I genuinely love the Live Action. Everyone just seems like they’re having the time of their lives. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, it knows what it is and it’s just fun.
Can’t wait for you to see the rest of the season.
Damn quite a shame you missing out an amazing story maybe one day you’ll continue on the other hand I want to see how far the live action would go.
@@AlexGamingAlexGaming02yeah, it seems people get put off by the sheer size of the series, with over 1,100 episodes and chapters. I’m nearly caught up the the anime and almost to the manga. @@AlexGamingAlexGaming02I got to that point quicker than anyone should have, but I still enjoyed it. If I would recommend one piece to anyone, I would go with reading the manga since it’s an easier read. 4:58 Ok, now this is important. You hear that song they're playing in the background while Shanks stitches Luffy up?
In this world it's an old song that pirates used to sing all the time. We hear it much much later in the story and Luffy comments that Shanks used to sing it. We won't hear the words till much later in this show.
Here is the full instrumental version of that song that they were playing in this scene, it's a nice addition to the world building by having us hear it now rather than in a few seasons when we get the full impact of it: ruclips.net/video/FcRTa65O61c/видео.html

Its not that it didn't blow it. It did, but has been a while since it released. Those that wanted to watch and those curious at the time, have already seen it. Its a very good live action.
The live action has so many references that one piece fans can see and enjoy, but not needed for new watchers. Plus, the live action has the benefit of having a ton of story ahead of it and can put into the earlier parts.
Thats not to say the manga/anime's beginning is lacking, but the live action makes it more meaty with a lot more of the world realized.
The thing they may struggle with is the size differences between some of the characters. Some one piece characters are huge(but not giants), much bigger than the normal sized human. Do wonder how they will handle that
you are both in for a treat.
Zoro is a strong fan-favorite in the anime because he always has cool and badass moments. He's also very strong. He's personally my favorite character too. The actor playing is a pure Japanese and a son of a late famous actor and martial artist in Japan..
Don't forget that Luffy is like the top and main character though. He's portrayed as goofy, sometimes dumb, but he is the strongest since he's the Captain of the crew.Although it's not officially declared in the anime, but Zoro is like his Vice Captain.
