- Renowned Polish pianist Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1982) plays excerpts from a few tangos and discusses his early exposure to the genre. From the documentary "L'amour de la Vie" (1969).
Horacio Salgán (1916-2016), the great Argentine pianist, composer and conductor, refers to this footage in an interview with Oscar Himschoot. Relevant excerpts:
"In the early days, there were very outstanding people such as [Agustín] Bardi and [Eduardo] Arolas. If we choose some of Bardi's compositions, we shall find that they have such an extraordinary lyrical character that I recently started to do something that in that past would have seemed to me too audacious. I have begun to make an evaluation of their qualities in comparison with those of the great geniuses of world music. And I find that Arolas, Bardi, [Juan Carlos] Cobián and others have reached a height comparable with that of the greatest composers of the world. Not in the development or symphonic building nor in long-breath works, but in the creation of melodies.
"That point of view is not only a personal thought. There is a film named "For the Love of Life" in which Arthur Rubinstein in person tells us his life and he plays two or three tangos and says that when he hears a tango he is moved to the extreme of tears. In the movie he plays a part of a tango and he asks if that number is not at the level of a sonata by Beethoven. It is a movie where Rubinstein speaks in French.
"About this I can tell you that Rubinstein likes Argentine popular music very much. In the December number of Revista Clásica edited in Buenos Aires, appears an interview to Lalo Schiffrin in New York, who says that he is writing a work in which one of its movements is referred to tango. And he says that tango has reached a height so that it cannot be considered simply a popular music any longer. He mentions Oscar Peterson, an incredible pianist, and I have the luck that he says that he played my tango Don Agustín Bardi before Rubinstein who enjoyed it so much to the point of asking him a copy to study it. And he even says that when he visited Stravinsky in his place, he was then very old and in a wheelchair, the great maestro asked him to play my music."

"En los primeros tiempos había gente de gran valía como eran Bardi y Arolas. Si tomamos algunos temas de Bardi vamos a encontrar que tienen un vuelo lírico tan extraordinario que últimamente me he puesto a hacer algo que antes me parecía atrevido. Me he puesto a hacer un balance de sus méritos comparados con los grandes genios de la música universal. Y me encuentro con que Arolas, Bardi, Cobián y otros han llegado a una gran altura comparable con los más grandes compositores del mundo. No en el desarrollo o factura sinfónica ni en obras de largo aliento, pero sí en la creación de melodías.
"Esta apreciación no es sólo un hecho personal. Hay una película titulada "Por Amor a la Vida", donde Arturo Rubinstein cuenta personalmente en cámara, su vida y en la que toca dos o tres tangos y dice que cuando escucha un tango se emociona hasta las lágrimas. Y toca en el filme una palie de un tango y pregunta si ese tema no es digno de una sonata de Beethoven. Es una película hablada en francés por Rubinstein.
"A todo esto puedo contarles el aprecio de Rubinstein por la música popular Argentina. En el número de diciembre de la Revista Clásica editada en Buenos Aires, aparece un reportaje a Lalo Schiffrin en Nueva York, quien dice estar haciendo una obra donde uno de sus movimientos se refiere al tango. Y dice que el tango ha llegado a una altura que no se lo puede considerar sólo una música popular. Nombra a Oscar Peterson un pianista increíble y tengo la suerte de que cuente que tocó mi tango Don Agustín Bardi delante de Rubinstein quien se entusiasmó tanto que se lo pidió para estudiarlo. Y dice además que cuando iba a la casa de Stravinsky, ya viejito y en sillón de ruedas, el gran maestro le pedía que tocara musica mia."

What a joyful man; his smile is infectious . Love for music is such a positive source of goodwill . I must say I am impressed also with his facility with languages; how easily he converses in French, then English, without hesitation. Almost as seamlessly as his playing.
Not to mention Polish, German and Spanish.
Rubinstein could charm a snake out of its skin. Fascinating guy.
Una vez el célebre director Arturo Toscanini sorprendió a uno de sus violinistas ejecutando un tango. Éste, contrariado al ver al maestro entrar en el estudio interrumpió la ejecución avergonzado, a lo que Toscanini le exhortó: No se averguenze, el Tango es la más noble de todas las músicas ciudadanas.

El eximio pianista Juancito Díaz me contó que conoció a Rubinstein en un viaje a Europa, de casualidad. el tocaba en la confitería del hotel, solo, ensayaba, y le pidió al mozo que nadie lo interrumpa. Y de repente entró un hombre, él se sintió contrariado y el mozo le dice: "disculpe, Señor, es el maestro Rubinstein que escuchó su piano y lo quiere conocer". Lo felicitó y elogió su manera de tocar. :)

@@dan0629-c1e Juancito Diaz un pianista especializado en tango ya fallecido.Fue muy famoso en Argentina en la época de esplendor del tango aunque creo q no trascendió más alla de las fronteras Argentinas, pero creo q no escribió solo interpretaba tango.

He was really in love with the piano. I belive that's why so many fall in love with him and his playing.
I love his spontaneous flair when talking about and illustrating the tango which he does so effortlessly.
+L In fact Artur Rubinstein was in love with music! The piano was "only" HIS instrument. Rubinstein was more a musician than a pianist (although I rate him the best together with Krystian Zimerman)! :D

Es conocida la historia de Piazzolla cuando con 18 años fue a tocar la puerta de Rubinstein alojado en Buenos Aires, para mostrarle el concerto para piano que habia compuesto, Rubinstein lo recibió, y al ver la obra, le pregunta donde estaba el arreglo para los otros instrumentos, que eso no era un concierto, concluyó preguntandole al Piazzolla de 18 años, si le gustaba la musica, con su respuesta afirmativa, Rubinstein le dijo, entonces por que no va a aprender música? Rubinstein le recomendó se reúna con Juan Jose Castro, y Castro lo recomendó a Ginastera.

I wonder if the original piece is tango, maybe it's not and he is playing it as tango and that's why is so difficult to find the name. For example between 2:48 - 2:57 he plays Die Fledermaus from Strauss but in a "tango way"

Se me ocurrió preguntar el nombre del primer tango en un foro de tangos y tampoco lo conocían. Tal vez es uno de esos tangos muy antiguos, con ritmo de habanera, el mismo que menciona en su historia. Es fácil de sacar de oído, por otra parte. Empieza con el acorde de Re menor y luego pasa a Re mayor. D minor and then D major.
Alguna vez leí lo siguiente: en su primera visita a Buenos Aires, es invitado según rigurosa costumbre a una casa "patricia" (la denominación más ajustada es "oligarca"). En un té entre amigos Rubistein fue "invitado" a tocar el piano, él, ya amante del tango arrancó con uno de ellos esperando el regocijo y cosechando el repudio de los presentes, no lo entendió hasta que alguien le explicó que para la oligarquía era de buen gusto despreciar el arte del pueblo propio. Lamentablemente esto que siempre fue exclusivo de esta clase a partir de los setenta se hizo carne en la juventud cumpliendo ese sueño de los oligarcas de desplazar la cultura e identidad propios. Lamentable. Salud.

This is the tango called "Esta noche me emborracho", very descriptive tango written by Discepolo, one of the most famous tango writers and also friend of Gardel, who sang this song. The tango makes a physical description of a woman, no longer beautiful, ten years after she broke the heart of the person in the center of that song, who now wonders how he could be so desperate with her. Rubinstein makes an ironic comment about this kind of tangos, that he call "canallas", (scoundrel), which described scenes from clubs, with "bad" men and women, etc
El tango es el ritmo musical mas bello que existe, pues a parte de las compsiciones musicales son a la misma vez historias que hay que saber interpretar creo yo.

@@MusikPiratCH Rubinstein and cziffra when it comes to liszt. His Un sospiro is unmatched.
Joel Gonzalez I don't know too much about Cziffra's Liszt interpretations. Liszt's b minor sonata I like most by Krystian Zimerman. Evgeny Kissin is also very good at Liszt. (And at least for me Liszt's Mephisto Waltz is the only piece I can listen to Vladimir Horowitz.)
