I'm a learner and a teacher, an encourager and an athlete. I love to share anything I've learned, anything that will help somebody else with their dog, to lift another's spirits, and to be strong and agile till the day I die. I'm 77, have a 10 mo lab.
I wish I had ppl i could have these conversations with. I don't feel I have anyone that would be so excited to talk about these topics as I am while listening to it, because it's been going back and forth in my head for quite a while and oh boy, do i want to share this podcast I lost contact with a dog trainer that taught me a bit my puppy when he was a baby, she wouldn't go as deep and was more rispid in her words, but essentially she'd say the same it's being said and now that I'm training by myself, I see I'm in this situation and this topic is making so much sense to me The funniest thing about it, is that what is said in this podcast isn't something only about dogs. It's just another of the aspects in life that this very intricacy manifests
Well, you are talking to me in this one. I tend to dive into listening and learning and don't take the action needed, and then I get myself overwhelmed. Thank you for this reminder.
I'm rewatching this and holy cow.... Is this foreshadowing!?! This! is Awesome in her own way, and didn't she make Susan learn and grow in ways she wasn't expecting! She might have had to re-look and her own identity as a dog owner and teacher. ❤
Thank you for this Susan! I am definitely an "information gatherer!" I wish my dogs would become more well-behaved just by how pretty my Recaller's binder is turning out! Don't dare me to read 600 blog posts, I'll do it lol! Time to take more action. Thanks for the push! :)
So true, I used to be a gatherer, then got so distracted I didn’t know where to go or what to do first. Thinking dog training had to be done instantly. I now take on little tasks, enjoy the journey and see how far I can go. Often I fail, but then sometimes I get a great ah ha moment of understanding and we move forward. The most important thing to me as a dog owner is the bond I share him. I am listening to your podcasts, I prefer watching on you tube. I’m loving Recallers and the games, and training my dog is a joy.
I've been on a 7-year journey with my rescue dog so far. Your podcasts have really helped me understand and learn how positive reinforcement actually works and how to engage my dog with it. Thank you so much for being a great mentor in this!
So great! "How do I train my dog?" Go out and work with your dog. I like watching these videos to see little details like how reward position changes the accuracy of the dog doing a desired move. And to find games that are fun for my low drive dog.
I needed to hear this! I commit so much time and energy to training my dogs or other peoples' dogs that I just realized it's how I procrastinate from completing my thesis. Training dogs will simply have to become my cookie for taking thesis action. Thank you again, Susan & Team DogsThat :)
I'm a foster parent that is always learning and taking action. By the way, some other facts are I'm one of your newest homeschool the dog members and I am looking forward to this journey! I've learned so much from shaped by dog already.
"You area dog trainer." We got a new 10mos rescue and i i learned dog training with my older dog so i am the designated "trainer" for him (not to mention my fiance needs to work on his patience for letting the dog do the right thing). Fiance made a passing comment about doing a boarding training depending on what behaviors popup in the upcoming weeks/months... I gently squashed that idea lol
✨✨✨✨✨ I got a dog to engage with and share my life with. Even when I "screw up" training, if we are laughing and having fun, then it's a win. Susan makes some excellent points here!
Thank u Susan for nonselfishly share this great and practical informations with us. They hepled me a lot in traininh my gsd. I watch so many diffrent podcasts on animal training and you ones i find most beneficial so far. Thank you agaon. Kind regarts, Lukas from Serbia, Europe
I started watching your podcasts 3 weeks before I got my new pup….I have had her 10 weeks today! I watch them while she is napping…I joined Recallers a few weeks ago and haven’t started yet and you nailed it in this podcast…wish I would have come across this one long ago as I have watched probably 100 podcasts to date….I watched connected dog series …I have no excuses…don’t get me wrong I do work with her daily…but haven’t started Recallers because thought I needed more foundation 🙃 so thank you for the kick I needed to get started…I am exactly as you describe curious, lifelong learner etc….need more ACTION and I’m on it…thank you for sharing😊kim
Oooh Susan, you saw right through me. Every word of this was just what I needed to hear. 9 days until my puppy comes home and I solemnly swear to fret not, trust the process, and play games!
I love listening to your podcasts. Never am I bored or distracted. I'm engaged in what you're saying and I'm taking notes so I can take action. I have 4 dogs and I divide up my time between the 4. Although I have one who is on her own planet, the other 3 are very eager to participate in a quick training session or game. Thanks again for the info.
I can relate to this podcast. Being a perfectionist that does get me in to trouble at times, I do have the mentality that if Handling 360 and Agility Nacion give us the tools and understanding , then why look futher. For that reason I do not participate in seminars because it only gets you more tangled up. SUSAN again hit the nail on the head😉
Wow, It is the Christmas holiday so I am re-watching these podcasts. This episode hit me so hard! I joined recallers at the end of November. I am always listening and reading. I was so overwhelmed trying to learn everything before I started I just could not get past a couple games. This podcast has challenged me to stop procrastinating!!! In order to use the knowledge, I must get up and DO something. Otherwise, I have wasted time and money and not helped my dog or myself. Thank you for this great advice. It is sort of a kick in the seat of the pants. Ha, So I am going right now to start the recallers games. Bye
ok, Susan, you called me out. I am both an information gatherer and ask everyone their thoughts. Perfectionism has held me back every time. This has been wonderful. Are you sure you didn't also get a psych degree? Thanks!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Great podcast and I'm always curious and Love to learn but Thanks to you and your programs, I more active in training and having fun with my bosties and it shows ❤❤❤❤⚘
wow, I just finished watching episode 1 and now this one, I'm happy, and sad to say way too many things hit home! Thank You ! Something kept pushing me to get the start I was looking for / needed! If I have created behaviors from old ways of thinking and teaching , how do I navigate the in between and or transition? I am much more a hearing , watching, doing person, so I am very grateful for your podcast! so many ahh haaaas!
Gems: if you are a dog owner, you are a dog trainer :) Remember you are a humble, curious, lifelong learner, and action taker. You can learn something from every single person you meet. Checklist: take a little in, assimilate it in your brain, rehearse it on a piece of paper, play with your dog. Training a dog is a great opportunity to learn through experience. Perfectionism is just another form of procrastination. Procrastination is a form of self protection. Identify yourself in a way that creates momentum for you to move forward with your dog. Most importantly: DO SOMETHING TODAY THAT IS GOING TO BRING YOU ONE STEP CLOSER TO HAVING A WELL TRAINED DOG. I think it's time for me to commit to #40in40. I just want to build my calendar to mark them off and have it posted on my wall.
If we don’t train sit and down the old school way? How do you clarify the command? Maybe I’m not far enough along in my podcast journey. I watch every podcast with a notebook and pen. 😉
Can't remember what episode it was, but you helped change the barking cattle dogs in the same x-pen to quiet ones when people or dogs walked by. I know you specifically asked the owners if they would fight each other for the treats, but What if the dogs did fight with treats on the ground? How would you have changed it, especially with 6 of them? What about dogs going after each other because of frustration of not getting to what's outside the fence - treats not even around? I still want to leave my dogs out at the same time. Please advise on both.
Hi Robin, the episode on resource guarding will be very helpful for you: ruclips.net/video/11bkaaX7LXY/видео.html There are also two videos on multiple dogs with lots strategies for household harmony. ruclips.net/video/XO41pfU_Us8/видео.html ruclips.net/video/Q6CyUeqHpGA/видео.html
My Husky/Aussie keeps training ME. Yeah. Big baby doesn't want to eat out in the kitchen so she cries from the living room. In comes the big sucker with her dish, next thing she's eating on the couch with me holding her dish. I like to think I'm still the Alpha.

Love that perfectionism= Procrastination= self protection

Thank you. Right words at the right time. This insecure procrastinator has been hiding behind the "newbie" label -- time to get to work!!

This is ANOTHER resonating (?) Podcast for me!
Over 40 years ago a person told me that "an EXPERT is just a Spert of unknown quantity." I have never called myself an EXPERT 😁❤👍

Take action, correct mistakes, moving on with your dog 👍❤ I will push away from computer 😄
Lol. I didnt think I was a newbie, but I got my first challenging dog and, well....definitely not an expert!
Brilliant
Awe they are adorable.

Love this!
Congratulations on the puppies! I'm more of a rescue person, but I have been thinking about fostering some puppies soon. They are so cute. :)
Me too, I have 3 bosties that are rescues, 2 are from the south and prefer rescues any day.

I go back and forth between info-gatherer - and jumping right in and forgetting to figure out the fundamentals...

I am me who loves my puppy cockapoo who I am trying to train to best of my ability I love listening and learning
Or Henry. I forgot about Henry.
My Husky/Aussie keeps training ME. Yeah. Big baby doesn't want to eat out in the kitchen so she cries from the living room. In comes the big sucker with her dish, next thing she's eating on the couch with me holding her dish. I like to think I'm still the Alpha.
Sally. Am I right? The puppy's name is Sally? Presumably it'll be a female, but, hey, I have a boy dog named Jayne. No judging here.
