Effortless Swimming you are outstanding my friend ! You have thought me so well over the years i thank you. One day I wish to send you a video ,with hopes it gets an analysis from you
Brenton Ford is probably the best technical swim analyst out there. I previously had university-level coaching, but my freestyle improved dramatically in a matter of months after I joined ES.
Hey taren, I'm 20 from the UK and am doing my first triathlon on Sunday, been following your videos for about a year now, just wanted to say thanks for everything! You've really been a great motivation! All the best
one of your best videos on swimming. Love the anaysis and the differences and crossover that different coaches give you. Very interesting seeing your stroke analysed. Thanks
Yep, what Darius Camp said. Both Tower and ES are correct. For ocean OPWS, and rough lake conditions, I was taught to adjust to a faster, shorter stroke. As a result of choppy conditions you sight more often and need to pop up out of the water cause it's not always possible to sight exactly at the wave crest. For pool swims and calm lake swims, a long reach and glide is best for conserving energy. ES is more for pure swimming; vs. triathlon OPWS. Remember, when you have a wetsuit on your swimming mechanics will change greatly! And there are not many Oly/70.3 or 140.6 distance non-wetsuit pool swims. For a triathlete, the most important matter is Swim Fitness. Meaning, you simply have an adequate enough technique combined with high swimming fitness, so that after your race day swim you feel fresh and can have a strong Bike/ Run. The amount of time spent in the pool trying to refine form and technique to get from a 1:40/100m to a sub 1:30 is not worth the effort for 90% of triathletes. That time is much better spent on the Bike and Run where you'll see double-minute gains on a long course during Race Day. However, it's great to become a better swimmer and if you're looking for a World Champ or podium spot, an unexpected non-wetsuit Swim on Race morning could give you a considerable advantage!
I'm a lucky fella because I'm getting instruction from the pair of you via RUclips ! Just like to say, you are doing an amazing job, I stumbled across your channel by chance. At 44 years old and a Novice to it all but excited to do my first Triathlon this summer using the knowledge I have gained. Thanks from here in South Wales UK, who gave you a thumbs down?? Phelps, don't understand, keep up the good work, maybe a trip to Wales to do Tenby Ironman which is now on the list for next year thanks to you guy's. Big love thanks Dustin.
love Brents channel! injured runner here and jumped in the pool as a complete newb. over the last month I've gone from swimming 2:50/100 to 2:00/100 just by watching his channel. love geeking out over how technical swimming is! GL in your training, sir! #subscribed #AuDeChlorine (my new cologne)
I sub to Effortless Swimming, too, so I did a double-take when I saw your name in an ES video title! Thanks for sharing this. I had virtually no rotation when I did my tri last year, so it's something I've been working on, too.
Well, a flash back for me to find this. I was trying to see if you had done a review on swim fins, similar to the ones on the hand paddles. I remember looking at this clip and noticing that you have 'runner's foot' when kicking. This, to me is having about a 10 to 20 degree flex in your ankle on your down/front side kick. Probably the most common thing I see that needs correction for about 90% or the swimmers I see in pools. As one who doesn't have over cooked spaghetti noodles for tendons and ligaments, when my toes are pointed as much as I can, I will get to about 180 degrees, or in a straight line with my shin. I recently discovered how much going pigeon toed, which uses that sloping outside surface of your foot to generate thrust, helps your kick, since i don't have 'Olympic' ankles that hyper extend. Took my time for a 1 lap/50 yard kick from almost 2 minutes to about 1:30 in about 2 months. So, looking at the various swim fins, they are almost made for either foot, and make it difficult to pronate. Any comments????
Taren you’re so awesome! Thank you for your generosity in sharing your tips and skills to assist others to work toward being their best! 😃 Love your positive energy too!
Love this - such a great video :) I have vastly improved my swimming using various youtube videos (IM swim 1:52 now down to 1:24) so all content much appreciated. Best of luck this season!!
Love all the vids. I am a into Total Immersion swimming and it goes against alot of this. You looked into TI swimming? And if you have do you just like this way better. You are a great swimmer I was just wondering. Thanks Taren
So this comes from a very novice swimmer but for the less glide vs more glide I would say it depends on water conditions. Rough choppy water requires a higher stroke rate so less glide. Calm water/pool swim allows for an efficient stroke and more glide.
This exactly. People who insist you should have just one length of glide are being daft. A good swimmer adopts the stroke rate and length to the conditions are swimming in. You wouldn't insist on having the exact same position and cadence in on the flats and hills on the bike, you wouldn't insist on running up and down hills the absolute exact same way as you do on the flats, you shouldn't insist on swimming the exact same way in all conditions.
Hey I’ve really gotten in to both you’re and Brent’s channel for improving my swim and Tri. I’ve always swam in a yard pool. When speaking 1:30 per 100 I’m assuming you mean 100m not yards.
Hey TT. I was wondering what hurts on you you after a BIG swim workout. (You said ouch during the intro). I did drills today and my legs are killing me.?? Do you find it's more upper body/lower/everything???
I understand your pain and confusion Taren with the advice from ES vs T26 with respect to extend more vs get into the catch sooner and soft hands vs good hand tone - you could do worse than watch ruclips.net/video/oSWlQvyBnzY/видео.html (and read supporting article: www.feelforthewater.com/2016/01/is-your-elbow-really-dropped-or-is-it.html) to see exactly what your stroke needs at the front to ensure you're a) into the catch better with a higher *relative* elbow as Ger has told you, b) maintaining better rhythm and tempo, c) truly developing an effective stroke for open water swimming...soft hands and more reach won't help you with that (and will be further counter-productive to your swimming development and removing the catch-up that you know you have). There's a reason people plateau at 1:40/100m and the front of your stroke is a prime example of that, but that doesn't need to be the case. My 2-cents (FWIW) is to stick with Gerry's advice and have a quick review of the video analysis above to help you on your way to tuning this up properly.
Very interesting the time spams they mention there to make those changes. We see these guys swimming in the olympics and they make it look so easy it is hard to understand all the time spent fixing all those details. We just see the “magical” result of these guys and gals swimming super efficiently.
Re glide: Look at some of the Race Club videos on freestyle. A good reach and glide (whilst maintaining propulsion) creates a Venturi effect that lifts the upper body and slightly reduces drag. Too much glide and you lose momentum and power.
Hi taren.i will be having my first race this august(sprint triathlon).i just wanted to ask question about the attire.if i will use a wetsuit,is it normal that my biking and running attire will become wet during the entire race?or my attire in running and biking should be dry because it is inside the wetsuit?(sorry for my english).thank you for the response:)
Wait a minute! We did these drills just this last Friday morning. Do these Jerry and Brent dudes know my coach? Or did my coach saw this before it was out? Maybe he just knows stuff.
I had my wife film my swimming. Holy crap im a crappy swimmer.... didn´t feel like it but it shows in the video.... Been swimmining for just about 3 months but thougt I was better
Awesome to work with you Taren 💪 keep up the great work in the pool and on YT!

Yes, I did TI in my early days and I like this better!
ti sucks
@@TriathlonTaren Why do you preffer Effortless Swimming instead of TI??. Great channel BTW.

Love your daily videos. Idea for a topic: training music. What type of tunes or playlists are you working out to especially on your runs?
I have the same pump-up playlist I've had for years. Lots of techno. It's different for everyone tho.
My current favorite is the TYR Hurricane Cat3
How does his recommendations line up with the Tower26 program? I’ve never heard Gerry focus too much on rotation.
Re glide: Look at some of the Race Club videos on freestyle. A good reach and glide (whilst maintaining propulsion) creates a Venturi effect that lifts the upper body and slightly reduces drag. Too much glide and you lose momentum and power.

I too think Brenton's the bee's knees for swim stroke study.
Effortless swimming is sick!
What are the drills given to you?
Great work!! On effortless swimming channel he has the work out, that taren received !
We need those drills Taren!! :) Share them!
They're in my book Triathlon Swimming Foundations!
@@TriathlonTaren thanks!
While I'm not a fan of Speedos, you're looking quite svelte. Could you please demonstrate the drills you were given? Thanks.

Hi Taren, what gear do you use for underwater recordings? thanks.
GoPro
YES! And they say that Infinity War was the most ambitious crossover event in history, psssh.
It was PRETTY freaking good...
What length is that pool?

Those swim trunks should be illegal. Good vid though.
