You might want to lock the cages of all the animals even if they're not escape risks. Our local indie pet store had their turtle stolen right out of his tank. It was caught on camera, dude put the turtle in the wee little backpack his toddler had on.
CANNOT like this comment enough. the odd item is a bummer but neither here nor there compared to losing a living animal to an uncertain fate. the majority of people are good, but all it takes is one, and there WILL be one, to break your heart.

Should be locked anyways for the animals safety! Customers shouldn't have the ability to open the cages as it could lead to a stepped on or lost reptile (and countless other scenarios but I'll leave it at this)
Both my husband and I have had to patch a few roofs in our life. The silicone will last a few months but the best thing to do is get a 5 gallon bucket of kool seal and a cheap mop and mop it on thick and it will last years and you don't have to constantly redo the silicone. And maybe put pictures on the sides of the frozen food sign. I cant wait to visit your zoo one day.
when I saw how easy emily (temp) fixed it, I thought the guy she called really tried to rip her off. He could have done that - or the kool seal, as you suggested - but that wouldn't have made him big bucks.
@@FeathPymArt yeah im gonna be honest the whole slap a whole new roof on top sounds like the guy didn't know what was really wrong (or maybe didn't even bother to properly check) so he was just like "Eh, slap a new roof on top."

The fact that the roofing company said “yeah you’re gonna need a whole new roof” and you literally just patched it with silicone and it was fine.... 👀👀👀

Well it's most likely just a temporary fix since there were already patches before which were not lasting. But I also think that there is most likely a cheaper solution which they maybe are even to do themself.

Question is how long it will be fine. While a whole new roof might be overkill, you probably need to replace large parts of it to make sure it stays that way.
The fact that they're opening their own business, doing EVERYTHING by hand as much as they can, and keeping up with youtube and patreon is amazing. You guys deserve so much!!!
You guys should make a care sheet for each animal you sell or adopt out and make people fill it out before they can take their pet home so you know they are going to good homes!

I would suggest a $40 adoption fee. That’s what all of my rescues have cost me and I think it’s at the right price where it isn’t too expensive to ward off interested people but not too cheap to where someone will just take it because it’s cheap.
My 3 rescue babies are named Iroh, Zuko and Kai. 💕🥰

Yeah it's very important to not give out any animals without at least a slightly prohibitive fee. Weird people come up with all kinds of crazy things to do with free or incredibly cheap animals.

I laughed, but as someone familiar with the postal system, they would not be phased in the slightest. The things you can mail through USPS are astounding.

you should 100% Ask for 1 or 2 references when someone wants too adopt. My local stores do, and the amount of people we get warned about is helpful.

Most people won't go through a sign up and background check for a pet if they have another store up the road doesn't require one.
We tried, people draw the line at lizards.
FYI! Part of my local animal shelter's screening for reptiles is to show proof of the enclosure and basic needs met before they process the adoption!
and it might be helpful to make a feeding hole in the tarantula/invert cubes to drop food into rather than people opening the container to feed them and risk an escape/bite

I’m driving 15 hours... that’s going to be rough. Luckily we’ll be out that way anyway when they open.
That's so lucky ! My drive would be about 11 hours sadly :( I live in Louisville ky and the traffic is bad near the bridge and theres traffic jams constantly so thats why it would take so incredibly long

I would suggest having pamphlets for each different species or a short list of their basic requirements nearby their cage so that it sets the customer’s expectations right away about what this animal needs from them to thrive! I would also add you can put a sign up with the basic step-by-step of your adoption process so people can get at least a first impression of how it will all work 😊✨

Emily did work in a pet store for a long time tho, so she knows how to run a store I'd assume. The main difference is setting it up and manage it on their own. I don't think opening a zoo/pet store would be be possible in this scale if non of them had any experience with it beforehand. Also, massive help from friends and family. There's probably some members there with experience starting up their own business to give some tips along the way c:
I would definitely recommend making sure that the info on the adoptable animals is noted somewhere in addition to the labels. Dry erase notes around customers have a pretty short shelf life.
Use non-permanent markers and remove them with solvents (tips from a cleanroom worker)
Permanent marker is easily removed using dry erase marker. Wet erase markers are also an option. -Preschool teacher

I'm with Ed on this one. As someone who keeps both reptiles & tarantulas, I'd definitely rather take my chances with Tiny & Rex than an overly-defensive OBT! 😆

Retail idea: you should have a package for new reptile owners. A bundle that has all the necessary needs for a reptile

It's a good idea but they almost never sell as is unless it's an invert kit. I've put together tons of these over the years but people generally want to pick out the stuff. I've had some success with tank that goes with appropriate lighting, heating, and thermostat but often a more complete kit takes up shelf space.
A checklist, however, has worked beautifully. You can write out the necessities attacked to a care guide and make sure they're aware of everything that goes into that pet. You'd be surprised how few people know they need an insect keeper and calcium powder when buying a beardie!
@@kwiggy5091 tbh I wouldn't sell them an animal then personally, it's either take the necessary items or don't get the animal, a person can personalize their enclosure when they know they have the required items.

Maybe you guys will see this, I’m a roofer and love the channel, next time you go up to fix the roof get some 502 seam sealer, you can get it at any roofing supply company, you paint it-on with a 4 inch chip brush easy. Hope it helps
The fact that Pudge looks exactly like my Leopard Gecko made me so happy, then I was like "Oh my" cause my Gecko is named "Pidge". I am giggling so much at this.
She looks just like mine too. It made me happy to see one as well, though mine is a boy.

You could have a reduced adoption fee if they buy all the supplies from your store (cage, lighting etc.)
Thy could do coupons in the adoption packet for the store so people can pick up whatever they need. My animal shelter does this for local stores.
Bless y'all's 💕 hearts... y'all work hard! I've never been that multi-tasked in my entire life... and I was a working mom R.N. I think times were simpler then. No one expected instant results. It was a "hard copy" world, and everything had a slower process . Emily, you look like your Mom... so sweet! Mom... you raised quite a woman there! Such a good ❤!
I'm a few days late: but maybe for things like the SD leaf litter you could put a little recycle box in the store so when the customer opens the bag, they can give back the tag to reuse (if not damaged) when they come back. Also, those rescue cages look 100x better than any enclosure I've seen at pet stores. There are places to hide with enrichment!

Hey Ed and Emily! Just a tip about your roof (from a Michigander who has similar roof issues who fixed the same way)
When winter hits, make sure to have a plan to keep the ice and snow build up on your roof to a minimum or you may end up with a nasty leak surprise.
As the heat from inside rises, it'll cause the ice and snow to melt and get deep and find its way into any tiny gap and leak.
The facility is looking great and I cannot wait till y'all are officially open and I can take a trip down!

The closest thing I got to owning a reptile is my red-eared sliders back in 2008. He passed away (my sister forgot to get him in when the weather was scorching hot when I was in school) and when I said I wanted a bearded dragon my folks said no :( so my daily dose of reptile is only from education channels like yours so thankyou, I'm so proud of you. Keep it up!

Hey on the off chance anyone sees this I really hope you have a good day I know it might be hard right now and it might feel like there's no use in trying anymore but trust me you are strong you are amazing and you will get trough this and when you do you will be so glad that you didn't stop trying I believe in you don't let the bad day hinder you and if it ever get really bad find someone to talk to you deserve to be happy
As it moves into summer, the metal of the roof will heat up and begin to temper again, causing the weak spots to expand as the metal shrinks when it gets hot and expands when it gets cold. The silicone should hold for a while. I'm glad you didn't start with expanding foam, which would have widened the gaps in other places and made the situation worse. Good job, Em.

I feel like you need a second opinion on the roof...there's NO WAY the existing roof is in such bad shape that the only solution is to slap a new roof on top of it!! Best of luck on your soft open, I love watching these progress videos!

Henry's is what's usually used for roof leaks. It looks like the ones that are already done have it on them. They sell a wet-patch product that can be used when it's raining. As far as leaks in general in steel-seam roofs, sometimes leaks can travel down the grooves. If it's still leaking, you may need food coloring to determine where it's coming from.
I’m just saying as someone who works at a petsmart. Y’all are gonna run out of mealworms and crickets so fast no matter how much prep! It’s a struggle but it’s so great to se people who aren’t a large corporation managing a business like this cause at our location we do a good job of informing customers but not all Petsmart’s are successful. And I just know you guys will be and it makes me so happy.

Can I just say a HUGE thank you for putting information as to the typical use of the products labels that you made. It's so frustrating when I find a product I don't know what it is and try to rely on an internet search for the instructions on how to use. Saving pet parents a big ol' headache with just a teeny bit more ink!

I found a channel yesterday called Ocean Conservation Namibia , they rescue seals from fishing lines and stuff that get tossed into the ocean. I would like to see that channel grow like yours did. It's for a really good cause.
