I’ve been wondering why so many people use suction cups and not these! Edit: wish you would have shown what the interior shot looked like. Not that it matters, just would satisfying to see the result.
I considered it, I even had an experimental film to show along with this but I felt it was too long as it is. The next car rig video I do, I’ll definitely show the example footage
Very Nice! While driving, for recording an ambient sound outside the car with strong wind sound blocked, do you have an idea which external mic should be used and how to set it??
Are you capturing engine or exhaust? For engine, try putting a lav mic on the side mirrors. Could also tuck it under the wiper cowl depending on the type of car. For the rear, putting it where the license plate is may help
@@joenicklo Thanks for the reply! If anything, I want to capture engine, but ideally, I want to get sounds of surroundings such as road sounds, passing car sounds, sounds of pedestrian so on(without wind sound). I will try to use a lav mic on the side mirrors! Really thanks!
Thanks for the video. I was looking how to get rid of those micro vibrations. Although I have a question... is there any problem with the magnets if its raining?
I've ran this setup in rain a few times. You need to make 100% sure that the windshield is dry when you setup the rig. If there is ANY moisture between the magnet and the glass, the magnets will fail.
Love how you rigged this and I see now how stable things can be with arms attached all around the camera. Also want to acknowledge how nice the shots, composition, lighting, grading, and audio are throughout this video. It looks like you had somewhat harsh sun but somehow ended up with great shots anyway. Do you remember how you were mic'd for this?
Thank you, I really appreciate the feedback. You're right, it was incredibly sunny that day so I used an ND. I was mic'd with a Saramonic UWMic9 wireless lav.
@@joenicklo I just got my kit in the mail from Adorama and it's different from yours. It has 1/4 20s on all 4 of the magnet plates. I just got the additional parts from rigwheels since I'm was going to get a second kit anyhow. Thanks again!
We've used this mounting system before as well. Super stable but we must have the older versions because there are no differences in the inside and outside magnets so your windshield wiper blades are a no-go while it's installed. We always make sure to spray the shield with RainX or some similar product just incase liquid get's on it you won't need your wiper blades. Just something to keep in mind if people aren't buying the brand new version.
Hi, love this. Thank You! Can you give me any insight to the legality of filming without permits with these. Seems like its low impact and the fact that they can be moved to a place on the windshield that doesn't obscure the drivers sightline. Any reports on the CHP asking to halt shooting?
I don't see how it would be illegal if it's not obscuring the driver's view. People use GoPros all the time inside the car and permits are not required. I believe once you start getting into heavier rigs on the EXTERIOR of the car is when you need to worry about permits.
Awesome video I've recently just started doing the tripod in the back seat camera angle for a video, I like it. It looks different to the POV angles or the camera directly pointed at you. Great tips keep them coming, Would you be able to do a video of how to film cinematics with the dji osmo mobile 3
Very informative video Joe ! awesome and rock solid solution for interior shots, btw are there any sort of vibrations from the car ? I know its very secure but wondering if there are any vibrations on the shot.
No vibration from the car itself should transmit to the shot unless it's rigged improperly. If you go over a bump, hit a pothole etc., that will definitely be seen in the shot.
I’m pretty sure that disabling the setting in camera doesn’t lock the sensor itself down completely. For example, sensor cleaning swab and tap the side of the sensor of a GH5. It will move because it’s on a “gyro” or whatever it’s called. Do the same on the GH5S and it won’t move. In all of the tests I’ve done with both GH5 and GH5S with the same lens, IBIS enabled or disabled, the GH5 always transmitted some form of micro-vibration into the shot.
@@joenicklo Interesting and good to know. I haven't really used cams with IBIS, so that's good insight. (Not that I have a reason to use IBIS, but still)
Really thank you for the great information! So far I really struggled to rig a camera in a car(and I could not set it perfectly every time...). I will try your setting! And I take a video forward from my car dashboard, but there are always reflections because of windshield glass, especially at night. Do you have any tips to avoid that reflection? I could resolve the problem if I used a mount and set the camera outside the car, but I want to do it from the inside. I will really appreciate it if you reply or make a video for that! And I am looking forward to your videos from Japan!
I’m loving your channel and tips. I use the day gherkin triple mount with my fx3 and lightweight lens but this does look like a future upgrade. Can I ask how you expose for longer driving takes for to camera driver shots like this angle. I don’t find I get consistent results due to changes in brightness during the drive. I had wondered if using a spot meter on the subject and exposure compensation may help. Many thanks
I think it all depends on the shot itself. Let's say I'm in the passenger seat filming the host of a show who's driving. Chances are, I'll have the Z Cam's app up and I'll change exposure from the app. Exposure compensation with spot metering should help if you're using a DSLR.
very nice video. What do you suggest if I want to use a ronin mx3 gimbal on the car. What system do you prefer. Also I will be using Z cam e2 with the gimbal

Depending on where you rig it and the actual angle of the windshield AND if you use a shorter lens, absolutely. I tried rigging this setup on a McLaren 720S and it was a nightmare.
I'm considering this product, but I have only one concern. When "de-rigging" how much of a hassle do these thing cause? Do you have any tips when getting these things off the car? Can I use a string to pass through between the magnets to lift the magnets up for easier "de-rigging?" I'd imagine 100lb of magnet pulling force is pretty hard to get it off the windshield. Thanks in advance.
I use two suction cups and one magnet (diy) I do not understand how you can not know that the ibis can be turned off in all cameras and you give advice on what equipment to use.
Yes, ibis can be turned off in camera but the sensor is still floating. It will still vibrate. There’s a reason why production companies like the one that produced The Grand Tour used LUMIX GH4’s and not GH5’s even though they were available. Do your own tests, look at the footage you come up with and then make a statement. I’ve done plenty of testing…
Это всё равно ненадёжное крепление, т.к. на большой скорости и высокой кочке тряска на камере будет такой сильной, что спокойно разорвёт связь с магнитом. И полетит ваш ред на пол. Лучше уж крепить всё на присоски.
With a name like Driven Films.. I wouldn't want to get car filming tips from anyone else.

Magnets can destroy the internal components in cameras and mics - how do you transport these very strong magnets so they don't impact the other gear?
The magnets don’t touch the equipment. They’re far enough away from the components that they don’t cause an issue.
