I learned "Muddy Road" from a 1960s recording of Claude Wolfenbarger of Grainger County, Tennessee. This song is known by various titles, including "County Jail," "Fall On My Knees," and "Lonesome Road." The A part melody is the same as "Willie Moore."
My instrument is a traditional gourd banjo handmade by myself. My tuning is dADF♯A ~ gDGBD.

can you make some of the octagonal/hexagonal wood-top mountain banjos? I have seen pictures of them from isolated mountain communities along with other mountain instruments like mountain dulcimer, diddly bow/pickin' stick/'canjo', and cigar box guitar.

  • @Goalkee32

The lyrics for anyone wanting them:
The longest day I ever saw
Was the day I left my home,
I walked that porch from post to post
Hung down my head and cried.
Look up look down this long muddy road
Hang down your head and cry.
The best of friends must part sometimes,
Honey why must you and I.
Don't you see that little turtle dove
As he flies from pine to pine,
He's mourning for his own true love
Just like I mourn for mine.
Edit: Missed a part in the middle :]

The color scheme on that instrument is fantastic , especially love the neck and peg heads deep rich look. Ever try wetting the wood with water to raise the grain a bit before staining it ? Takes some extra time but the end result is pretty cool.

    • @CliftonHicksbanjo
      @CliftonHicksbanjo  Год назад +7

Yes, I always wet the wood to raise the "fur" of the grain during final sanding process before oiling. No stain on that neck; that is just oiled black walnut.
