As someone who has chronic back problems, I loved Dick York. He was an amazing man and he tried to work through it for so many years. I'm just sorry. No one was there for him when he really needed someone. Darren was Dick come/ man York ❤
I enjoyed watching Dick York as Samantha's tv husband in 'Bewitched' enormously. He was so wholesome, so good in the role. I was 7 years old watching him on tv when I lived in Sydney in the late Fifties when nearly all tv programmes came out of America onto Australian tv. I thiught he was endearing and I liked his voice as well as his hilarious expressions. Wonderful to know that he was so helpful and generous to others in real life, and all this while suffering bad health. What a man!
York was terrific as Darrin on Bewitched. Dick Sargent (2nd Darrin) was actually supposed to have the part originally, but wasn't available due to contractual obligations. That's how York was cast. Personally, I preferred York's portrayal to Sargent's. Even though his mouth kept getting him in trouble with Endora and Samantha's other relatives, he was likeable and clearly loved Sam and Tabitha. Sargent's Darrin also had a big mouth that got him in trouble but always seemed very angry and to me wasn't likeable. The chemistry with Sam just wasn't there. Unfortunately, York had been a heavy smoker which is what led to his emphysema and death. What a legacy he left behind, though, not just with his role on Bewitched but all the charitable work he did afterward up until his death. Sadly, he also died destitute as it's my understanding that he didn't get residuals from Bewitched.
Not quite the whole story. In truth, during his tenure as Derrin on BeWitched, he had an obsession with Elizabeth Montgomery. Witnesses said that he continually stared at her, although both he and Elizabeth were married at the time. Elizabeth's husband was the producer of the show, William Asher. Dick did not leave because of his health, but because Elizabeth gave Bill Asher and ultimatum, either Dick York would be fired or she would walk. For many years, Dick York tried to reestablish contact with her, but she avoided him. Two weeks before he died, he tried again, but Elizabeth refused to talk to him ever again after he was fired from the show.
Dick York always regreted that he couldn't complete his role on BEWITCHED. Dick York, Dick Sargent, and Elizabeth Montgomery all died within a little over three years of each other. York was a good person and fine actor, but not my favorite Darrin.

Yeah I prefer him as Darrin.
Wish his life could have been longer and less hard on him. Love you, Donald. 😊
Who is Donald ?
@ffausto Donald was one of the many names Endora would call him. Derwood, Darius, Dobbin Serena would call him dingdong. On and on.

My favorite was "Dustbin." That might have been one of Maurice's names for him.

Who were all these witnesses?
The crippling back pain where he couldn't walk or even stand also helped his departure from the show
