  • Metal Fabrication! I know that is why many of you are suscribers so today we are building tools from scratch. Jack stands are important and in many cases they are expensive. Building these yourself is much cheaper and you can make them to fit your exact applications. Not to mention the strength is up to you! You can build them out of 1/4" or even 1/2" steel if you want to! The sky is the limit! Homemade jack stands can be safer then store bought but if you want to trust your life to them I would find a mechanical engineer to approve your design. I can't stress enough how important it is to take your safety seriously.
    I hope this video can help spawn some creativity and get you in the shop building your own tools. Small welding projects like this can give you more experience and unlock more diy project ideas.

    Good project. Just a tip: make sure you support the outfeed on that new saw. I got the skilsaw version and was cutting some 45* miters in .125 x1.5 angle with about 2 feet hanging off the non-clamped end and when it got through, the piece that dropped caught the blade and sent it flying, taking a tooth off my brand new blade. Other than that, im super happy with the carbide saws. P.s. The wife doesn't like it because the chips get stuck in my boot and get tracked in the house. Not fun to step on.

    Make sure you make a couple tops with screw adjustments so you can use them to level stuff when you are fabricating. The feet for scaffolding are usually pretty reasonable and make good platforms to build off of.

    Another great video to inspire the rest of us to get fabbing. A nice touch would be to drill a hole on one side of you base, weld a nut on, then a T handle welded to the bolt. This would allow infinite height adjustability for light things like exhaust, and your pins for heavy things like axles. Again, great video.

    I did a version of these for my final welidng project back in my welding classes a few years back. Mine was a much different design, but much the same concept. Yours are definitely cheaper though as my design used some 1" threaded rod with a huge nut welded to the top. Gave you really fine adjustability, but it was spendy! Haha... great stuff, Nate. Used a chop saw like that for years. Make sure your material is clamped down good, if it comes loose a tooth on the blade might catch it and then break teeth off the blade. Scared me when I saw you cutting all those angle iron at the same time. Also if you cut a short piece off -2” and under, keep the blade down until it stops rotating. If you let it go up there is a good chance the blade can catch the small piece that was cut off and jamb it into the blade breaking teeth.

    • @seekingadventures
      @seekingadventures 4 года назад +3

      Also when cutting flat bar or angle iron. Don’t lay it flat stand it up so the blade cuts through the thickness and not the width of the material, cut
      s quicker and creates less heat. Nice job on the video.

    To cut a 60 degrees angle when your saw only allows up to 45 degrees, cut a 45 degrees piece that you will use as a wedge. Set your saw to 15 degrees plus the wedge and that will do your 60 degrees.

    Nice build, thanks for sharing.
    Question: could you have used the angle iron for the support legs without making any cuts and just lay it on one side (rotating angle iron by 45°)? That way you had flat side on top of the outrigger and the other size overlapping side of the outrigger and then just weld it that way?
    I don't think there would be any rotational or torsion forces acting on the stand as you would have the outriggers on all 4 sides.

    Hey Nate, love the production quality on all your videos and the content is amazing. Trying to step up my game and saw the GripGear Movie Maker slider in your Amazon list. Is this the one you're using for your slow-mo shots?

      It's ok for a cheap slider. I now use a more expensive one so it can hold my mirrorless cameras. But for small cameras the grip gear does the job 👍

    Hi Nate, great video mate. Would you trust these enough to put a 4wd on??

    If you put some valve grinding compound on them and work them back.and forth will fix the binding issue
