Rhythm Roulette: Matt Martians | Mass Appeal

- We caught up with producer, illustrator, and Odd Future member Matt Martians Good Records on Manhattan's Lower East Side. (Aside from his contributions to Odd Future, Martians is also a member of The Jet Age of Tomorrow, The Super D3Shay, and the Grammy-nominated group The Internet. He released his solo debut 'The Drum Chord Theory' on Three Quarters Records this past January.)
You know the drill: MM was blindfolded, instructed to choose three records, and then turned loose in the studio to see what kind of beat he could cook up. Martians ended up with some diverse picks-and funky album art to boot. "Look at that shit, man! That shit screams the '70s," Martians said of 'The Essential Jimmy Rushing', just one of the three random records he chopped up on this week's edition of Rhythm Roulette.

You can tell Tyler learned a lot from this guy, he derived a lot of his musical style and taste from him. He produced odd futures first mixtape btw.
sammyscumbag singing for sure!
Both of them were already fans of n.e.r.d and the neptunes, so they had in common that, but Matt definitely helped tyler on producing.
pls tell me what keyboard he uses pls some one

This frustrates me so much, this man puts out some quality shit and not that many people know him. Matt Martians is an artist.
Been listening to Matt for years and he's still not getting the recognition he deserves
Khalid Hassaan he’s fucking amazing!!!
I honestly don’t think he is trying to be big or recognized as great as his stuff is he doesn’t do any social media or nothing like that to promote himself he just puts the stuff out
I feel like that's how it is with a lot of the gold ones, like MonoNeon has very few listens yet is an incredibly prolific artists who has played live with dozens of world renowned musicians. Same w this man, yet everyone sleeps on his projects.
Stg
refreshing and hes creative as fuck. this is what producing is all about.
Eric 1 fr!!

It's such a soul warming thing to see so many producers having so much respect and admiration for Brazilian music.
hell yeah dude
Good producers know to look for inspiration/samples from all around the world,
Many goldmine to be found in Brazilian music, Azymuth are my favorite band

Rhythm Roulette is a series i never get enough of
Met this guy in London when he was playing with The Internet at the Jazz Café - super chill nice dude for the brief time speaking to him at the end, and obviously super talented.
Matt is so creative! everybody who say this weak just follows trends in music. The internet is great
He chose some crazy records. Result almost sounds like something Pharrell woulda made back in the day

Greenery I miss those Neptunes days...
Greenery one of Matts biggest inspirations is P
Courtney Moore good times
You mean chad hugo, right ?
First time he's ever sampled a beat and he flipped it that crazy. That's some genius level shit
Lance Kangethe hip hop is sampling
Sigh, in the VIDEO he says it's the first time he's ever sampled for a beat. That is what I'm referring to
Lance Kangethe my bad amigo. I didn't catch that part.
I think he said it was his first time sampling from a record. I'm not familiar with him but he might sample digitally.
John Doe very true, may have to do some research
I can't stop watching this. He's actually my idol due to his production
Interesting comment.. Says he is fascinated the way space and underwater water look similar sometimes.. There are beliefs that we are between two bodies of water. The celestial waters of the heavens being held by the firmament.
I really appreciate his approach. he's just messing around and having fun and coming up with some really fresh, organic shit. I love this series. i am always inspired from getting an inside look at how folks approach this work differently. Thanks for doing this, Mass Appeal!
Get more producers like Matt on here. It's refreshing to have somebody that's not just a hip hop producer.
this is why matt is one of my favourite artists out, his taste in melody and vibe is just amazing, extremely talented dude.
Y'all know he's like the main producer for The Internet right? Should've never expected trap. Lookout of for this beat on their next project damn near lol. Would sound fire with some Syd vocals.

The beat he made gives off a Early 2000's N.E.R.D/ Pharrell vibe 😌 Too nice

The drum chord theory is dope
He's got some serious talent
Honestly if I were a musician and such I would definitely pair up with him
I'm really into Deftones style but this is very calming and relaxing instead of just agro hard rock
Matt Martians is definitely my favorite band member from The Internet

This guy has a pharrel type of vibe
Seen this at least 4 or 5 times, but everytime I leave amazed
No he did not bust out the Korg M3!!!! To this day it's my favorite piece of equipment that I've ever owned. Gotta get another one soon.
Kenny Lopez fuck yeah , great piece
everything he made looks like a brainstorm, very creative and pure and i apreciate the good song made from a brazillian vibe, the way he use that samba drumn loop was nice hahaha
Love hearing something DIFFERENT!!! Some may not like this but I think it’s fresh!! Well done sir. Well done.
I know nothing about this dude...but I love the way he embraces his creativity.
Matt seems chill af lol
Bruh...he definitely made some "space-age" fire with them beatz!!!
Wow, you see what this dude brings to the group. Mad talented. Dope. 👌🏾👌🏾
He fine asf his style swag everything he dope
He was definitely one of my favs to watch... next to Mac Miller tho
This is crazy. One of the best rhythm roulettes imo. Dude has talent. He used the sample as a foundation rather than a crutch.
My inspiration!!
I really like the off-kilter, looseness of his approach to things.
I can't express my love for this man
Matt is so underrated
dope!!
OH MY GOD. One of the best ones yet.
Really appreciate the creativity.
fuck what ya heard, Martian killed it.
He just took part of a beat and then made mad tunes from it. Damn! Sounded like the reincarnation of the Neptunes!
Yo that car start up sound is definitely from n.e.r.d.'s backseat love lol.
I would have love to have seen that vocal processing chain :/
Joba A peep his SoundCloud released song today apparently
Me too, I’ve been trynna figure out how he records his vocals
I have a crush on him
Girl, you’re fineeeeeee ❤️
This was dope. Dude got a really different ear. He low-key look like Quentin Miller older brother.
I knew it was going to be some smooth shit it's Matt
Matt Martians: The Present and The Future
Dude is super talented. Extremely upset that the Drum Chord Theory is his only album

He has a new album, The Last Party
New album: going normal
he is playing look like from the new album
Damn son, what part?k
Best one so far, this vibe!!!
This reminded me of Frank Ocean's Monks and Vince Staples' War Ready.
IDGAF this is the best Rhythm Roulette OF ALL TIME
I got to interview Matt and Syd a couple years back; they're so down to earth.
brought tears to my eyes lmao... sounds like some early Neptunes beat...
Awwwwwwww shit
so sick oh wow
This was fun. Matt seems to be a toppdollar guy.
Who’s here after finding out that he coming out with another album on the 26th
Man that was tight! you could really tell how much Matt loves his craft and It totally showed 👌 Rhythm Roulette always gets such solid producer's on the show!

Oh they crazy. DCT is sick. I'm hype. Liked before I even start
Dope shit right here, smooth as shit. Kinda disappointed he only sample a drum loop though. That being said, the song that came out of it was still groovy as hell, so I'm not mad.
Matt made it on Rhythm Roulette!!! Sick sounds as always
this is good!
Dope
I could see Tyler, The Creator using this as a interlude with Frank Ocean and Earl Sweatshirt on it. Shit would be flames 🔥🔥🔥🔥
This cut made it onto his new album it’s called look like
